"And here in a our cafeteria, they're offering way better food than they ever do on a normal day because a bunch of prospective students are here. "
@Kehwanna2 жыл бұрын
My university was in downtown Philadelphia, I never went to the cafeteria or wasted money on the school's food plans. There were far better options within range. Plus, making your own food based on a rational budget often beats whatever the cafeteria makes. I always feel for students studying at colleges located in some isolated area where the school cafeteria is pretty much all they have.
@salvadorromero9712 Жыл бұрын
@@Kehwanna My school forced everyone who lived on campus to buy a meal plan and forced everyone to live on campus the first two years. Something like this is, or was, not unheard of for schools that have few commuter students and few older students (ie starting more than the two or three years out of high school required for a Mormon mission, military enlistment, bit of postsecondary education or backpacking trip etc). Others exempt commuters and nontraditionals but keep the rule for others. We had pretty decent and nutritious food and pretty limited desirable offcampus options but still few but athletes and the very lazy would have bought the meal plans otherwise!

Skipped all the "I have a scholarship!" "Well, that's great! Even if it's a full ride, you can still expect to pay tens of thousands of dollars in miscellaneous extra fees that it doesn't cover, and you likely will lose the scholarship after a year or two because the requirements for keeping it are unusually strict and specific and we go out of our ways to make sure you can't meet them. But by the time you lose it, you will already be in debt and talk yourself into finishing your degree on your own dime!" Or "We tell you that we have great job placement assistance, but in reality over 80% of those placements are in low wage jobs you could get without even needing a GED so we aren't really assisting you at all" Or in my case (DeVRY) "And here is our state of the art computer lab! As you can see, we have two state of the art computers which are always being used by teacher's aides, and the other 80 PCs in here are 5 years old and already incredibly outdated. But hey, when you see our hardware servicing lab with it's 486 machines that can barely run windows 3.1 you will think these 5 year old PCs are from the future!"

My college would keep bumping students out of classes without transferring them to similar classes, which meant those students would no longer be full-time students and would lose their student aid. My school also demanded you pay them for the semester and all the fees immediately, so the students were screwed over even further.

The reality: "Here's the beautiful fitness center that costs you $200 per semester in student fees yet still costs $10 to use, only a quarter of you will actually ever use it. Here's a model dorm room that looks like the one at every other university you visited but is way nicer than the one you'll actually be in. Here is our one recently built academic building, but all your classes will be in that ugly one with stairwells too narrow for the capacity of the expanded lecture halls recently "renovated," but it's okay, we bribed the fire chief to approve it. And here's our glamorous new stadium the university spent $100 million to build because this school cares far more about sports than academics, and literally the entire campus will shut down on game days. Academiwhat? Nah, this school isn't about teaching you anything, it's only about sports, research, and taking your money."

So I used to live right in front of the "tour room" aka "mint condition room". Anyway, the thing is many many parents take a an opportunity to peek and even take pictures of our room when clearly someone is in the room! Please don't open or peak into other people's room! or even try to open closed room! It is common for us to leave our doors slightly open for other dormmates to come by and say hi to hang out! We don't mind if you are in the hallway, but if you push the door like a creep and take a picture? We have a problem. Also, we know for sure that the tour guys have warned to not open our doors or peak inside because they know 1/50 parents do this and out of many tour guys are our own dormmates.

When I toured my college, it wasn't an official tour. I was visiting the campus for recruiting and my friend went to the college. At night, she walked with me around the entire campus. No uppity student guide, no crowd I had to keep up with, no boring facts, nothing. Just seeing the buildings and being on campus with no agenda was the experience I needed. I think college tours are popular because it gives students in high school an excuse not to be in class.
