i applaud that bapak for keep using english even though he is not fluent but he tried his best to use english to talk with you. problem with Indonesian, we mostly are afraid of making mistake or saying the wrong thing so we end up not using English. basically, some of us (esp. in Big city) we understand english (simple English conversation ) but we struggle with the proper vocabulary. though there are people like this Bapak, who will try to keep on using English with little explaining, some other prefers to pretend that they dont understand english at all.
