Knowing that does not mean we should blindly assume 9 years is the normal sentence in that country because it certainly is not.

Especially when you go to a foreign country, you want to be extra careful to follow their laws. She probably would have got away with a slap on the wrist in the U.S., but places like Singapore, Russia, Iraq, China, etc., they will throw the book at you and you will incur severe penalties. I'm not going to say people should go to prison for years for smoking cannabis. Obviously these two people wasn't intending to sell and distribute and isn't apart of some huge drug ring, it was more for personal use but if the rules say you can't bring that stuff into the country then just follow the rules and all this could've been avoided. They broke the law in that country and now they got to suffer the punishment. Its Russia and not America, different rules.
