YEEESSSS!!!!! YES. YES. YEESSS TO ALL OF THIS! The raise requirements not working for people who just can't/don't teach as many classes. The pay deductions for cancelations. The whole it costing more money to go get a doctor's note. Just... yes. Was so great to visit the Beijing and San Fran headquarters and really hear about how they are trying to make a lot of these policy's and procedures work for more teachers. I love that you shared your thoughts with us. The more we all voice our thoughts and opinions on what just doesn't work for the teachers the better. Otherwise, VIPKid wouldn't know where we stand on everything and what needs to be re-looked at. :)

Patricia, I've brought it up to the team in the US before and they agreed it was unfair, but they don't influence those policy changes, that's on the Beijing side. The growth of the US team is the best thing VIPKID ever did. It's funny, as a recruiter I've brought up changes and have the opposite problem sometimes - they change the referral program so often and adapt it for the teacher's benefit constantly. I just wish they did the same for teaching.

YES to ALL of this!! The raise structure HAS to change! I highly resent being expected to work seven days a week to receive any sort of raise or incentive. This job is supposed to work for ME and they constantly market it that way, and then surprise us with all these expectations. It is underhanded and lessens my respect for the company, and prevents me from making any sort of referrals. You telling us they are using your image without permission or remuneration is also very bad practice. In this country it is highly illegal. There should also be more consequences to students for inappropriate behavior. There should be a written company policy of unacceptable behaviors, and if a student does not follow them, their booking privileges should be revoked. A teacher should be able to request NOT to have to teach a student that has crossed a line. Love you and all you do for us, Miss Angela! Love your honesty. With all due respect, since you work so hard (never cancelled) do you have "a life?" It seems that the Asian people MARRY their jobs for LIFE. In America, people move and grow and enjoys change so a JOB is secondary to life styles that change. With some work experience and the right education, people can choose to change jobs often. You are a little different. I know you enjoy what you do and can be proud of your accomplishments but your style matches the Asian style more than the American "ways".

I started at 7.50 and I have a master's in teaching and have phenomenal scores meet all requirements for a raise except the amount of classes taught. After 2 years no raise which i was assured was easy to get when I argued in the beginning that I deserve more. I was literally giving birth asking my sign in so i could teach my class because i was worried they wouldn't believe it (thankfully since the birth certificate ending up reflecting the exact time of the class it wasnt an issue) since every other communication I had never worked out in my favor. I have taught through horrible pain and sickness so I wouldn't be punished. Thrown up on camera more than once. My biggest concern is the robotic answers. It seems like the support team doesn't know English and are using poor translators and just clicking whatever stock policy answer has the most key words to match. I feel like they have all the power and dont think of us as human with real families and bodily functions. The pay is so good and the master classes are so fun to teach that I continue almost 2 years later. This video really resonated. Thanks for your boldness.

Put your employees first and your business will thrive. VIPkid puts their parents first. They are cocky from their short term success and the ability to bring on more teachers quickly but this is not sustainable to the company or quality teaching. Students should be assigned teachers and if they don’t like them they can put in a request for a change. This environment of more more more just to keep a student takes the focus off the lesson (constant reward changes, wacky hats, and costly props) insane. These kids are old enough (except pre vip kids) to sit through a 25 min lesson without me spending what I make in that class just to keep them engaged and coming back. If VIPKID hires you. You’re qualified. Yet parents can pick you based on vanity, gender, and other presumptions. Shook.

First, thank you so much for ALL the MANY ways you have helped, inspired, and educated myself and many others! I love watching your videos! Secondly, I agree with everything you pointed out. I absolutely LOVE working for VIPKID and it has been an amazing life changing experience! However, I have been let down by them in the exact ways you mentioned. I have sent many tickets addressing issues, politely, asking for soft cancellation and was able to provide proof for the situations (power outage due to high winds...definitely out of my control and a Fireman suggested that I cancel) but I was still penalized my pay...that I had already earned...more than what I make per class....is most definitely an overly way to punish us. The fact that we are missing pay, letting down students and parents, and having it displayed on our profile is plenty of punishment for missing class. Taking away pay you rightfully earned on top of the rest is truly overboard. I just recently found out we have to meet a certain amount if finished classes in order for a pay raise. I feel that takes away from the perk of determining your own schedule and the whole point of Substitute teachers. A pay raise should be based upon an individuals performance not if they are capable of teaching 24/7 and having zero free time for family and friends. I strongly agree that these need to be changed for everyone's sake...teachers, students, and the company. Happier teachers = happier students = happy parents =VIPKID growth and productivity! I'm praying that VIPKID hears our voice and makes these changes soon before teachers leave and parents go elsewhere. I love VIPKID and truly want to do this the rest of my life, but I fear the company going kaput if these changes aren't made due to the domino effect.

Great information that answers many questions. Thank you. I lived and taught in China for four years. I am qualified with TESOL, IELTS, TEFL certifications and my face also ended up on billboards and in newspapers. This is going to sound harsh, but it had nothing to do with my teaching ability. There were plenty of teachers that were great that did not receive the recognition and feedback I did. It was simply because they were not young & female. Some even because they were simply short did not receive any recognition. Men and women who taught IELTS with extraordinary success when their student scores came back from international testing were passed by for raises and better contracts regularly. I am sure that you're a wonderful teacher and your experience speaks for itself, but you fit very well into the Chinese stereotype of what a teacher should look like. I hope you do get your raise through a policy chance because your reviews clearly indicate that you've earned it. While the billboards are flattering, they don't speak to your ability, although the ability is clearly present.

Similar to yourself I started at $7.50 (despite nearly 3 years experience teaching ESL in China and a degree), and I was actually told upon hiring that I would automatically receive a raise every other contract. Then they changed the policy. Ridiculously unfair!!! I guess I can understand why they changed it. The new policy allows them to base raises on straightforward metrics, as opposed to reviewing individual teachers. It was probably feasible to review individual contracts when there were just a few thousand teachers. Now with over 60K teachers, it would take a lot of manpower to maintain that. But if I'm getting certified and opening the slots but it's just that the parents aren't booking me, what am I supposed to do with that? Why are raises based on a metric that is beyond my control?

I have some idea, but any tips or direction is always good... This is provided I can continue through the application process. It's annoying not being able to watch your own submitted video. (I also dread paying someone all my money only to have my taxes screwed up, thank you H&R Block... or to find it was something I could figure out myself.... ) Thank you for your video. Angela, you’re one of the teachers who inspired me to apply, and continue with VIPKID! I LOVE this company! It’s amazing being able to set my own schedule. I’ve even referred a few teachers. You’re title scares me! While I love most things VIPKID, there are a few things I’ve really noticed are real issues: 1. The cancellation policy. Totally with you 100%. It can always improve. With that comes stability with soft/medium cancellation consistency. It seems depending on the person who gets the ticket, depends on the outcome. I could be wrong on course. Depending on what the teachers submit, but it just seems inconsistent from a general perspective. 2. Many have complained that the system does wonky things now and again. I’ve never experienced this personally, but some say there are phantom bookings where something was booked they never opened and never do because they take their kids to school, or Sundays for religious reasons. It could be teacher accident, however just a response from the company that they are looking into would appease many who fear this might happen. 3. Changing status types after the class has been marked ‘as finished’. Some a day later, some a month later. Without even an email explaining why. At least a notification explaining a class type change and the reason for it would be great... not to mention the financial penalty that comes along with it. Again, hasn’t happened to me yet, but I’m always so paranoid. 4. Booking information. All we know is parents book us. However after I had to cancel in December, I noticed my weekly bookings went down. I didn’t get very many trials (at least not what I had been). Luckily my ‘regular’ and ‘Semi-regular’ students understood after I sent a card... but it seems the booking is just weird and maybe not so much just the parents? Maybe it is because they see the stat goes down, it would just be nice to see what the parents sees.... Thank you for being such an awesome teacher and leader for us newbies! This has been an exciting journey and I’m going to keep going! I love these these kiddos! This is by far one of the best jobs I’ve ever had. Despite the ‘growing pains’. I feel confident the company is always striving for greatness. I’m with, as I feel like a lot gets lost in translation when it comes to tickets etc. I’m so happy to learn you didn’t give up! You’re an amazing jewel to the company and a reason why many of us teachers hang in there! You’re always so positive, even when giving a bit of the negative!!! :)

Hi Angela, Could you explain what exactly you mean by you only open short notice classes the night before? Is this a better method to getting booked? I'm fairly new, started in December, and I always have like 3 weeks scheduled on the bookings but I have booked very few classes. Any help would be great, thank you!
@lareschultz5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Angela. I like your honesty and comments. I also feel cheated by their pay and raise policy. I am a certified teacher with nearly 30 years of classroom experience in elementary, 17 of these in international schools teaching English to non-natove speakers, 8 years in university (music) and a master's degree. Yet my base pay was apparently calculated only on the basis of my demo lessons from which I was hired. I have heard of people with no experience or education training starting at higher--I started at $8 per class. I was curious about how you manage to teach only short notice? I tend to get just a few short notice a week, yet I do have a lot of regulars (would like more, but only been at it 4 months). Most of them like to book in advance. I have some keep requesting bookings with me on my days off and when I don't accept, they find another teacher. I would be afraid to not open slots until the day before, expecting most of them would go to another teacher for booking convenience. I was also not permitted to work with a person doing referrals during the hiring process. I tried to add one when I found out about it, and was told I already had one! Apparently some do nothing person got $100 for referring me just for posting the form I filled out online, yet offered absolutely no support. Had I had someone to ask basic questions and been make aware that the quality of my initial interviews would affect my pay scale for the rest of my time at VIPKID, more than all of my experience and education, I of course could have studied and polished my initial interview more. This could have added up to tens of thousands of dollars more over the next ten years of teaching . No other place I ever worked paid little or no attention to experience, certification, and education--they don't mean (as they said to you) a higher starting salary. I would like to try teaching all short notice if I could to make up the difference. I have 85 5 apple feedback out of 450 classes, and only one 4 apple. But no prospect for a raise until after a year, and then only 50 cents a lesson if I understand. And they almost never will book me for trials. (I am guessing that's due to my age of 60? I can see no other reason I am routinely passed over for trials since I started.) SOrry to be long winded. I am lucky as I live in Thailand, so the hours are OK, although I would rather work mornings than till 9:30 at night which is the case most days. Thank you. Larry

I don't think the parents need to know how long we have been with VIPKID. I got hired and then couldn't open slots to work for a few months, so then I was trying to get started over 100 days in with 0 classes taught and 0 feedback, and I felt like it made it really hard for me to attract parents to my profile.

I'd love to know how you do only short notice - I'm moving to more and more short notice only -- I feel so bad for my regulars. If they Priority book you, do you just refuse it? I have been opening PPT's as short notice and they all fill. Some of my regulars are understanding when I'm putting in feedback that I will be opening slots for "same day bookings" but I still have regulars asking to priority book me during those times and I feel like I have to pick and choose. I feel as if I'm walking a really fine line between keeping regulars and trying to balance picking up a couple of more bucks a class. I am teaching most of Saturday as only short notice...but finding that I'm feeling bad for many of my students......

Angela, I am so glad I happened to stumble into your video that you recorded in February. It took alot of guts to be so candid, but your comments were thoughtful, fair, and direct. I am retired and used to be in college admissions at a nursing college here in the Chicago area for an online RN to BSN Program run by DeVry University. I am used to being monitored and dealing with quotas, but there is was just somethng I felt intuitively regarding VIPKID. I did not automatically proceed to finish the application I started last year and the woman who I was referred to in TX, by a friend, quit them the minute she got a local teaching offer. So, I don't think I will be moving forward with them. The hourly lure of the $18-$22 per hour to find out that it is only $7.50 per hour or half hour is very misleading and now hearing about the cancellation fees that are docked out of hours already worked with 6 cancellations being grounds for termination, along with the new raise requirements, ALL seems to me to be Red Flags screaming to be heard.....I admire your fortitude in remaining with them, but with your dedication, you really should look for another company. THe policy of having to get a doctor's note, as if you were a child, is antiquated and you were correct when you said in one of the remarks that I read below, that is is all about quantity, not quality with this company. Sad.
@AngelaSilva5 жыл бұрын
Hey Evelyn, thanks for sharing your thoughts. I hope you watched my video through to the end - that although I was started at a lower-than-average base pay I average about $23/hour teaching with VIPKID. They make it very easy, so the $18-22/hour is not inflated or exaggerated. I've also never even come close to hitting the 6 cancellations per contract, and they've been more than accommodating when I've had emergencies. No company or job is perfect and although VIPKID has room for improvement, they've only ever shown that they rise to the occasion. Because of my position with them I work with dozens of applicants and hundreds of new teachers every day, and am closely involved with how they handle situations when they occur. VIPKID teachers are overall well taken care of, with an entire team dedicated to improving the concerns they voice. I am happily staying with VIPKID and will continue working with them toward improvements and growth, as I share their vision as well.

@@AngelaSilva I appreciate you responding so quickly and I did watch your video until the end. You are right in saying no company is perfect, and I agree. I have been looking at a review of Gogokid and see that they require ONE year of Teaching experience, which I do not have, but I would hope that some type of certification like TESOL or such would remedy this and a Bachelors degree is required as well, which I have....GogoKid's referral bonuses to recruiters is lower at $100 per vs $120, but Gogokid seems to have less restrictions to get to the level to get bonuses besides Referral fees....If I do move forward with VIPKID, I would use you as my recruiter, of course. 100% agree about the penalty. I woke up one day in August throwing up and had to cancel 6 classes because I could not sit up without dry heaving. I applied for the soft cancellation and was denied because I didn’t go to the doctor. I tried to explain that, in America we don’t run to the doctor for everything. It was just a 24 hour stomach virus. I sent a picture of the medicine I took because they asked for it and still nothing. I was so upset which did not help my stomach feel any better. I lost a lot of money. It’s not fair at all. If you have a sick day at a normal hourly job, they don’t dock your pay, you just don’t get paid for that day’s work. This needs to be fixed especially for circumstances like sickness. It’s just not right.

I am looking at all of the comments here and seeing many of the VIPKID teachers who have been to China and have been on the forefront of being leaders to teachers at VIPKID. I hope that VIPKID will hear the many voices of their teachers and hear there are many ways of demonstrating excellence in addition to teaching 1200 classes a year for a raise, as well as other criteria. As probably one of the oldest teachers here (retired, but still kicking), I know these are shining stars as they have demonstrated in many ways. Please Please PLEASE recognize the talent and keep them with this great company! Some of these teachers here will still be here when I am long gone if you recognize their many diverse abilities that are more than a number!

I hope they create different categories like they do for contests. Very qualified teachers spend the free time they have doing more certifications, workshops, and other continuing education to become better teachers, but can't put in more teaching hours. Other jobs reward workers for continuing education and quality measurements. Perhaps they could offer a raise for completing a certain amount of certifications independent of # of classes taught, and for having a certain % of 5-apple ratings, but then also a category for # of classes taught because those teachers deserve to be recognized, as well.

Most of the parents were understanding, though I would have rather not had to teach those days at all.

💗negatives: I’m with you on the regular pay and deductions for the cancellation/no shows. They did the same to me when it was time to “ renew” my contract ( changed the rules) and have consistently done every year ( I’ve been a teacher for 3 years now) so my base is $8.50 and hadn’t changed in 3 years. Even after asking VIPKID multiple times, it falls on deaf ears. I tried for many soft/medium cancellations and this also falls on deaf ears- unless you can verify you were in a hospital-there is no kind consideration for sickness or family emergencies if you can’t provide substantial “evidence “ of the issue. Which treats us like employees not contractors ( so then give us health benefits!). Even with finish type changes where you do provide evidence (screen shots) they rarely change the finish type and you spend pointless hours and email going back and forth that waste everyone’s time. I did however get a couple finish types changed, yet it was on average a month after the class and took on average about 15-20 emails/open support tickets. 😤

Also.... It bothers me that I get dinged if i cancel in less than 24 hours and yet I have repeatedly seen students fall off my schedule with 12 hours or less notice and then I am just out the money for that slot because there isn't enough time for another student to book the slot. The money is really only good if you can teach back to back classes. I find it frustrating when I have gaps because a student drops a class at the last minute. I have set that time aside and I should get paid for that. Other companies are paying teachers when students cancel so VIPKID needs to step it up in this area.

I'm so glad you brought up these issues. VIPKid is by far the best job I've ever had. Although, my biggest issues are pay raise and cancelation penalties. If I need to cancel a class, I'm already losing money by not teaching it. It hurts being hit twice for something that's out of my control. I also can't teach enough hours to meet the raise requirements. And, I have zero control over my parent feedback ratio! One month it's at 60% and the next it's at 10%. So...I'll never get a raise. I also was hired just before they changed the raise requirements, so I have been stuck at that pay rate. I have wanted to do short notice, but am SO nervous that I won't get booked. I do not have many followers. I have over 1200 classes, but only taught 200 students. I have been teaching regulars since about 2 months in, so I don't have many followers. What do you suggest I do to get more followers? Should I just make the jump and switch to short notice only?

What ever you do, DO NOT APPLY TO Magic Ears. They engage in age prejudice. I did a great job giving my 8-minute interview, which I prepared hours for. They had encouraged me saying I would be a perfect fit and could probably get a secondary potion as in interviewer. For the interview, I had several fun props: a ball to toss, a stuffed dolphin, a spy glass, and I even wore a cap with the inflatable ears. I was very playful and energetic for the entire 8 minutes. The interviewer told me the next step would be the trial 25-minute class, where I would be taught how to use the platform better, and suggested that I get a headset. So, I expected to be hired. Oh, but the next day I was told I didn't pass. IMPOSSIBLE. I practiced their demo video over and over and did virtually all the same things. I am American with two Master's degrees and over 20 years of experience teaching ESL. But, I'm 70 -- That's the problem.

Crap, Vietnam learning centers hire at a higher pay rate and I thought they were the cheapest. In 08 when I first started teaching I was the same as you. No teaching background and no TESOL. Cleverlearn, in Ho Chi Minh City, hired me at $13 an hour until I got my TESOL then bumped me up to $15 an hour. On topic as one that is still trying to put together my demo video, most likely over thinking the adjustments from 12 years in classroom teaching with kids, TOEIC/TOFEL/IETLS students and University level to now online. Your videos are a help.

I started at the same rate as you with over 20 years of part-time teaching experience and a teaching degree.

A MAJOR con in addition to the ones mentioned below and yours is pay but in a different realm. For me I have very low bookings due to reasons I won’t go into here. BUT when I was hired I was told about base pay and $1 for being in time and $1 if I teach for than a certain number of classes per class. HOWEVER I get mmm 3-5 bookings a week so the pay I was told is completely different from what I am getting. LOW BOOKINGS is a huge problem for many many many teachers. As well as unpredictable money. $1000 one month and $100 the next. Getting worse by the flood of new teachers being on boarded daily. Unless the VIPKID current teachers have full spots they should not being hiring wildly excessive amounts. Are the prepping to expand? Maybe maybe not BUT those teachers then need to be on boarded for future but not in the pool to teach. Low bookings a huge huge CON because I came here to make money. I love you for this bold video ( I say bold because the community of teachers is wild with “life’s perfect at VIPKID use my referral” ) but a major if not the biggest con was missed.

J D there’s much discrimination when parents pick a teacher based on a picture and a poorly translated ‘about me’. I’m sure black people aren’t the only ones, older, those with weight issues, men have all reported low bookings. Of course in each category there’s an exception but personally and advice to others would be to avoid companies where parents choose you. Can lead to much age, race, gender, and body/beauty discrimination.

Most days my classes start at 2:30 AM haha but it's my only job so I try to go back to sleep when I am done around 6-6:30 AM. If I can't go back to sleep I try to nap later. I don't work on Sundays. I love that we can teach anywhere too!

Is the pay good enough to have this as your only income? Would I have to supplement my income? Work a PT job?
@bonnieapostol95015 жыл бұрын
@@lisastacey7061 for me, it's not enough money for that. But I currently don't need a full time job. I'd definitely suggest having 2 jobs and use vip as a side job, especially when first starting out.

I agree with what you are saying. I am a teacher with the company. I feel like a lot of stuff is baptism by fire for lack of a better term. There are so many things I didn’t/still don’t know. It would have been smart for me to get a mentor, but I didn’t realize I truly needed one until I got hired. One incident that made me upset was once when I had back to back bookings. The student before did a UG assessment. She showed up about 5 minutes late and was struggling with the material. I went over my time. I didn’t know how to contact anyone to let the other student know (it has since changed and is easier to contact the fireman.). I tried to show up like 5 minutes and 30 seconds to the next class and couldn’t get in because they marked me as a no show. They took away pay from me :(. I was honestly up and had every intention of teaching the next student. I also think they need to do a paid online training to tell us who to contact/how to contact people, how to navigate the website, differences with using the phone versus a computer, etc. I’ve watched a lot of your videos in order to learn about what I need to do. Thanks for your pragmatism.

My contract with them ends in May 2019. I am ready to move on. The training however was a good introduction to me for online training.

What about the time difference with the East Coast? What typical morning hours do you teach? Are evening hours a viable option for East coasters?

I'm on the East Coast as well and am in the final step for hire. What times are your typical classes? Thanks for this helpful video!
