You get a shiver in the dark It's a raining in the park but meantime- South of the river you stop and you hold everything A band is blowing Dixie, double four time You feel alright when you hear the music ring Well now you step inside but you don't see too many faces Coming in out of the rain they hear the jazz go down Competition in other places Uh but the horns they blowin' that sound Way on down south Way on down south London town You check out guitar George, he knows-all the chords Mind, it's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing They said an old guitar is all, he can afford When he gets up under the lights to play his thing And Harry doesn't mind, if he doesn't, make the scene He's got a daytime job, he's doing alright He can play the Honky Tonk like anything Savin' it up, for Friday night With the Sultans We're the Sultans of Swing Then a crowd a young boys they're a foolin' around in the corner Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles They don't give a damn about any trumpet playin' band It ain't what they call Rock and Roll And the Sultans Yeah, the Sultans, they play Creole Creole And then the man he steps right up to the microphone And says at last just as the time bell rings "Goodnight, now it's time to go home" Then he makes it fast with one more thing "We are the Sultans We are the Sultans of Swing"

This is a great performance (and if I remember right, this is the show where the drummer's father was in the audience that night, and it was the first time he had ever seen his son perform, so they went all out). Knopfler can be a bit mumbly sometimes, but that's part of his style, and he's still one of my favourite musicians. The studio version makes it easier to understand the vocals, but the gist of it is that the song is about a small band that plays bars and clubs, etc.

One of the BEST LIVE PERFORMANCES of the Rock Era....Sadly, a 4 out of 10 is not what it is seen us today. Music is about musicianship and for some.... the word have a heavier meaning vs other songs that the beat, tempo and melody along with the talent make it a top tier song of their era. Add a LIVE performance that is FLAWLESS and it becomes ICONIC. Of course, not all see it in the same light. Just I think most of us were surprised at a very low-score considering how revered it is in Rock History to this day. So the reason I could not hit the LIKE.... is claiming it rates merely a 4 out of 10.... sorrry.

The reason you don’t understand what he’s saying is probably because (I’m assuming) you only ever listen to people with American accents. To get better at understanding different accents you just need to listen to more people speaking English that aren’t from the USA ✌️ Mark Knopfler is from England, I don’t know if you’ve heard of it, but it’s the birthplace of the English language 🏴 so with all due respect, as an American, you’re the one with the accent, not him 😉 And re the lyrics, why do you NEED to know the lyrics? You listen to too much rap, where it’s only about the lyrics (pretty awful ones usually too). There ARE other elements to music lol. Proper music i mean. God forbid you ever listen to classical music😂There’s tons of songs I love but don’t know the lyrics too. Wow. You just really showed in this one video how small your world is.

Mark Knopfler (in red) is a poet as well as a phenomenal guitarist, but he does mumble sometimes in live performance. This was his first hit, originally recorded in 1978 and shown here in a live performance in 1983. He's still working, by the way. He's 74 years old, and his latest album came out in April 2024. It reached #3 on the British album charts, right behind Beyonce. The thing about Mark is that he did become one of the biggest British rock stars of the 1980s, but he didn't really start making money at it until he was almost 30 years old. Before that he played in a lot of different bands doing a lot of different musical genres, often in pubs and other small venues, until he finally got the band Dire Straits together and started recording his original songs. So he's got a real sympathy for people at the bottom of the entertainment business, trying to scratch out a living from a combination of their music and their day jobs. This song is about a band he heard one rainy night in south London, playing Louisiana blues and not getting much audience reaction. He's got another very famous song about a street musician. You can hear it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZWchZ99eb96oas

So what went wrong? You didn’t come prepared: ALWAYS have the lyrics before you begin your reaction. I don’t mean read them ahead of time, though sometimes it is best. Just have them in front of you in case you can’t hear or understand them. It’s NOT your fault! And NO, the studio versions AREN’T always better! For example, THIS Alchemy Live version is the very best recording of this song. Friend, MOST people can’t understand all the lyrics to most songs. Even if they catch every word, the meaning can be much harder. And ASK whoever recommends, or filters songs for you, whether you should read the lyrics first. I can tell you that you -should- read and even study the lyrics of every Grateful Dead song before you react to it. But you should almost never pre-read the lyrics of the Beatles. This is a practice you’ll need in order to make strong reactions to music. Okay, keep going friend, you’re doing great!

Mark Knopfler was/is big time friend of Bob Dylan, and i think his singing style is influenced by him. I genuinely can't believe you find him difficult to understand - he's singing in English 😊. I would say though that the accent is based on American. Back in the day (50's) when pop took off in the UK, bands used to use what was then called 'a Mid-atlantic accent'. I hope you've since googled the lyrics, and that the musicianship didn’t stop any of your enjoyment of this. This was based on a true experience of Mark's, in a South London pub. The band weren't very good apparently, and Mark has since commented on the name by saying the band weren't very good, and definitely not Sultans of anything 😂😂😂

Sorry but IMO this was a really boring & disinterested reaction to say the least, and you not only cut off the ending but then had the cheek to dish out a 4/10 rating for this Alchemy Live performance of a song that is part of the fabric of Rock history. Dire Straits (who are in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame) were a British band of incredible musicians, lead by legendary genius Mark Knopfler, singer, magical guitarist, lyricist/songwriter, record producer, soundtrack composer of 9 movies, and a musical career that’s not over yet. Diss them at your peril young man, DS & MK, like many other 70’s, 80’s, 90’s bands and musicians, still have a massive international following of music lovers who are not in the least impressed with the current, sadly overdubbed, autotuned, AI state of today’s ‘music industry’. I watch reaction vids EVERY night, and I follow so many reactors, so I don't have time to watch ones that I know, up front, will disappoint me. I heard this song when it first came out. But our US ears are not always able to understand the words, because we aren't familiar with the accent or the story. And as I looked through the comments, I saw that someone has put the lyrics out for you. He's telling a story about a time he heard a band on a wet night in London a long time ago. It is a look back in time. I hope you were able to give more thought to this. Personally, I love it. But everyone has a different take on things. But, I would think just the way the band was so tight, how the music (not words) was used like a hook that would draw you in, let you go partially and then pull you right back in, you would now have another opinion. I am impressed with the way Mark Knopfler pulls the sounds out of his guitar, the impressive drummer, both of the other guitars and the seamless insertion of the keyboards all come together to give an experience. I would suggest that if you now understand the words, that you could get people of your back, by rating it where it should be and that is a 10+. Take Care.

If you are a lyricist study, you need to go back to the classroom and re-learn. The lyrics are so brilliant because we have all seen and experienced watching a band in a bar. and watching each individual player. Look up what a Sultan is... Look up what type of music "Swing" is. For me I immediately knew and undertood that term the first time I heard it, even though it is metaphorical.

OK to start you need to know what the Sultans are. It's a sad state of affairs that people don't know who the Sultans were. The Sultans were the Kings in the Ottoman empire, so they are the kings of swing. The inspiration for the tune came when the lead Singer was sitting in a near empty pub in south London with a ban playing to a small crowd that were just in the pub to play pool, that had no interest in the band. The band was called The Sultans of Swing.
@edwindekoning82944 ай бұрын
too bad you didnt search for the lyrics during your recording..it is an apparently true story of him going on a rainy evening into a pub where a not so good band was playing..he describes the players...and he found it funny that a band that was not really good was using the name " sultans of swing" he then wrote this song describing the evening and the band... only the music would be more than a 10 already ..how they perform this live version is the best ever... hope you now understand what the song is about!

His father was in the crowd for the first time, and his timing was a little faster than the studio version. But the rest of the band had to pick up the pace and the rest was musical history.
