The 2231 Pecos is the best boot money can buy. If you're struggling to choose a style, that's the one to get. The minilug tread wears fast in concrete and metal grate, in the dirt your safe.
@AgonxOC4 жыл бұрын
Problem is that the 2231, which I own are basically a 2233, which I also own and he hates. I like both my 2233 and 2231. The 2233 are older and have been resoled with Vibram, the 2231 still have the original Super Soles. I actually think the Super Soles are super comfortable, but they do wear out pretty quickly and if replace the welt you might run into the problem he had (Leader separating from the sole). I absolutely love my 2233 and I recommend them all the time. My uppers are pretty good and I keep my boots moist and with a nice coat of wax on the toe for protection.
@raiderracer20035 жыл бұрын
The 2233 boots do well in some places and horrible in others. When I worked factory on 0 grade concrete they did great for me. And word of warning on the 2218 the soles freeze solid when it gets really cold then they feel like you have ice blocks strapped to your feet otherwise they are amazing
@AgonxOC4 жыл бұрын
I really enjoy my 2233, but the soles do wear out pretty fast. I have resoled mine with Vibram, not as comfortable, but a lot more durable than Super Soles... Also if you redo the welt at all, it must be done by a really good cobbler.

Ive got 5 years on those loggers so far. They aren't my everyday year round biit but see consistent winter wear (mine are insulated) doing tree removal. Recently cleaned, conditioned and applied some waterproofing to them along with new insoles and they're good as new. The 2233 is the most rugged comfortable boot I've ever owned, to bad you had a bad experience but man I would never own another pair, the combination of 100 percent made in USA tanned leather in the s.b. tannery, the construction is top notch with the puritan triple stitch down the the hybrid welt, the only downside to the boot is the sole but the went for comfort over durability, but I put the vibram lugs on the resole and get alot more life out of them but does sacrifice some cushion. I've never had a 2233 boot come unattached from the midsole like that and I'm sure red wing would make that right for you they have top of of class customer service in my experience. Anyway just my thoughts on the boot, and another boot I recommend is the 2414.
@Eyore823 жыл бұрын
I personally can't do the 2414's, only because they're insulated. I'm a welder and my feet get HOT! Any insulation is too much insulation for me. That's why i go with boots like the 2233, 2218 and the pecos 4470. I do wish they offered the supersole 2.0 on the 2233's. I think that would make a great combo!
@boogaloobaloo3 жыл бұрын

Too bad you didn't like the 2233. I really like my 2233, but I will say my Super Soles did not last. Mine have Vibram soles now. With the super sole welt, you have to be cautious on cobbler you pick for the resoles.
@Eyore824 жыл бұрын
I did like the 2233's initially (and still do as a yardwork boot). It was the soles that upset me. They never ever should've worn out that fast! I also had mine resoled with vibram. They should've come like that from the factory

I just bought some 2231, steel toe, pull on Pecos. Out of the box they are uncomfortable. Like walking on granite. Bought some Dr. Scholls and that fixed the in sole, obviously. Now though, the top of the boot is pretty tight on the top of my foot. My question is, after working in them, do you think they will break in and become comfortable? I work on the deck in a steel foundry, shifting weights. So I'll put them through a torture test very quickly. You seem to have extensive experience on RedWing, so I'd like to know what you think. Thank you. I paid $217 for them, by the way.
@Eyore824 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I think you'll be fine. Pecos typically take some time to break in, because the leather is higher quality than most, and then become ridiculously comfortable.. And yeah, i like to rip out the original insoles and replace them with dr sholes too. Just make sure you don't double them up. If you do, you run the risk of stretching the leather too much, resulting in a side blowout. The boots themselves should well outlast those mini lug soles. I've personally had 2 sets of mini lugs fail prematurely, due to the "harsh" weld shop environment. The good news is..they're relatively inexpensive to replace with some high quality Vibram soles. Keep them oiled, let them break in for a while, and enjoy them! Also, keep me posted.. I'm interested to know how they hold up against the demand of the foundry!
@boodro21224 жыл бұрын
@@Eyore82 Will do. I will keep you posted. Thank you for the reply and advice. I DID double them up. I will be removing the original before I wear them again. Thanks!

When buying red wings ,tell the sales person you plan on inserting an insole. They will size your boot specifically ,and that should solve the issue your having.

Do you use the original sole inserts or do you use another brand like Dr. Schouls?
@Eyore823 жыл бұрын
It depends on the boot, and what type of heel it has. For the pecos boots, i typically stick with Dr Scholl's work Insoles. I save the original Insoles, and use them as a template for trimming the new ones. And for boots with a fairly flat sole, I'll use a drop-in Dr Scholl's heel and arch support, along with a thin Dr Scholl's insole.. All are readily available and reasonably priced. For boots like the lace up 2233's, they come with a Poron insole. I've never needed to replace one, and they're my personal favorite type of insole. I honestly don't know if they'd even be replaceable without destroying the boot..

Opinions on the 866? I want them but don’t know if the break in will kill me or not
@Eyore823 жыл бұрын
I don't have any personal experience with the 866's, but generally speaking, most red wing boots have a slightly longer than "normal" break-in (compared with cheap china boots).. But i do know most of my red wing pecos boots haven't been too terribly bad with break-in. I usually just wear them to church for the first month or two. Couple hours here and there during the week.. Then they're pretty well good to go into full time rotation. I guess it really depends on what you're using them for, and if the break-in period will be a deal breaker for you.
@SleepyNine3 жыл бұрын
@@Eyore82 I work construction so I wear my boots 10-14 hours a day. I’ve been wearing Irish setters for the last 2 1/2 years and love them but want to go with a slip on from red wings now. I love the look of 866 but I’ve been told the break in is brutal so I didn’t know if they would be worth it.
@Eyore823 жыл бұрын
@@SleepyNine Compared to Irish setters, I'm sure the red wing would be harder to break in. Also, i think you'd be disappointed with the durability of those Christy soles in a construction company. They're comfortable, but they wear fast.

@@Eyore82 I’ve been wearing those soles on my Irish setters. Only issue I’ve had is the toe on the sole goes smooth but the front of my Mac toes usually split open and reveal the steel toe before the sole wears down bad enough

@Eyore823 жыл бұрын
Yes, they are a great boot! I now own 2 new pairs of them. The leather is very high quality. And the soles are comfortable enough to wear them all day with no problems! I will caution you against wearing them in snow, or on wet/slick surfaces. There's basically zero tread grip in those situations. I've personally slipped and fallen several times while wearing them in the snow, and on wet/rainy finished (waxed) floors, like in Walmart entrances. They are a fantastic fair weather boot though! I wear them regularly, spring through fall.

I'd sell my boots before I pay $150 for resoling my boots, that price includes shipping and tax, with the proceeds of the new boots, I'd buy me a new pair. All their boots aren't perfect, I'm sure they have a few bad apples like other companies. They should of taken care of these model boot owners, maybe someone got greedy?
@Eyore823 жыл бұрын
I think you're probably right. They definitely had a bad run of them. My guess is that they outsourced the soles for cheap, and didn't have any way to correct the issue. For me, the actual purchase price of the boot isn't an issue, since I'm reimbursed through my company. That being said, i was willing to pay out of pocket for the re-sole, because the boots themselves were initially very comfortable to wear. I also think that my local redwing guy did a sub-par job on the re-sole.. However, that never would've been an issue, if the boots would have come from redwing with a good sole.
