The plot of this movie is so dark. The timeline is never fully set in stone, but his ex-girlfriend's father is murdered and she is staging the revenge murders in a way so that the father or batman could plausibly have done it. In a sense the Joker is the detective in this film, also.

True story: I saw this in the theater when it came out with my younger brother and my uncle. Right at the part where it's about to be revealed who the Phantasm is the movie stopped! The film got jammed in the machine. So you hear the Phantasm say "So... you figured it out" and grabs the mask to remove it and then nothing. I've never seen a movie audience more pissed off in my entire life. It took at least half an hour for them to fix it. Worth the wait, but my God, the WORST place for a movie to suddenly stop due to mechanical failure.
