The thing with "gritty" remakes of Grimm fairytales is.... the original stories from the middle ages are bruuuutal. I grew up with the classic german versions, which are already a LOT bloodier than the Disney fluff versions to begin with, but the first draft versions are Old Testament type of brutal

Other insane Tiptoes facts: - Kate Beckinsale is McConaughey's love interest, Carol, and she actually delivers the line (I promise I am not making this up): "So you had a circle jerk with a bunch of little people? I would love to see that!" - Patricia Arquette plays Maurice's (Peter Dinklage) alcoholic girlfriend. - McConaughey and Oldman are TWIN BROTHERS despite the fact that they look nothing alike and Oldman looks about 30 years older than McConaughey in this movie. - For some cruel reason their parents decided to name McConaughey's character "Steven" while Oldman's character got saddled with the name "Rolfe", like he's some weird fairytale character. I understand Rolfe IS a real name, but COME ON!

Full disclosure: I enjoyed Snow White & the Huntsman in precisely the same way I enjoyed Jupiter Ascending The costume designs are gorgeous, the idea is interesting, and the whisper&scream villains are absurdly entertaining and any & all awkwardness of the leads isn’t enough to detract from that joy Ophelia with Daisy Ridley is almost in the same camp-except Ridley isn’t awkward and no one actually whisper-screams but the costume designs are gorgeous and retelling is interesting yet also weird. I feel like the potential of a female focus and the pivot towards female bonds was fascinating even if they had to invent & rewrite to force the themes I wasn’t really into Huntsman: Winter’s War. I went only for Charlize Theron but she sadly was not enough to salvage it for me

Well folks down in the academy thought so too. Because it got an oscar nom for the visual effects. Yes maybe the movie wasn't great in terms of storytelling, and shoddy in terms of acting. I'm still waiting for someone to realize they don't have to try and twist the Disney princess model into the stereotypical "strong female characters who don't need no man to save them" when there are plenty of tales like "East of the Sun, West of the Moon" or "Tam Lin" or the original "Snow Queen" where the female lead has to set off on a quest to save the male love interest. I just want to see any take on a fairy tale not done by Disney. But no, apparently pop culture thinks the only fairy tales are the ones Disney has already done, so we need the thousandth variation on Snow White or Cinderella.

11:23 Couple of things... 1. The money they made from those films (and in Pattinson's case, _Goblet of Fire_ ) means they can basically take whatever role they want without necessarily worrying about financial results, and they are wisely choosing to enjoy themselves. 2. They have both publicly sh*t on those movies essentially since they finished doing press for them. It was a paycheck, and I would imagine a reasonably lucrative one. So is next week _Ghostbusters_ or _Independence Day: Resurgence_ ? It seems a little early for Ghostbusters, but I don't know what ID:R would be tying into.
My super-favorite fairy tale is "The Marsh King’s Daughter ". If you ignore the part with the talking storks, it's absolutely amazing story of love, life and faith. Combined with some interspecies sex and the ultra creepy idea of time-dislocation: thousands of years passing in a blink of an eye after which everyone you love is already dead. I mean, it's seriously weird one, but I really love it.
