I've seen a theory around with supporting evidence from the books that only the marauders could see each other on the map, in the book Harry never saw Peter Pettigrew on the map so the films got that wrong. Lupin did and he was marauder and it makes sense that nobody could see them on it in case someone found the map and therefore no one could use it to find them.

I'm sure they weren't looking for where Ron was every night. It's the twins. Why would they be looking at the map to see where Ron was and keep tabs on him? Do they care: No. Is that what they used the map for: No. There are a lot of people at Hogwarts and the only ones Fred and George were concerned about were the ones that would catch them sneaking around Hogwarts doing stuff they weren't supposed to. They would be looking for where Filch was for example.

The point is that defining the game that way pretty much makes everything else going on on the field irrelevant. It doesn't matter how many goals they score by getting the other balls through those hoops because the entire game comes down to who catches the snitch. Really if it was realistic everyone would stop even trying to score goals and just concentrate on helping the seeker get the snitch as much as possible. Then again, I'm probably just over analyzing it given its a kids book about a made up game of people flying around on brooms and I was in my 40's when I first started reading the books :)
