@Zack-bl2gg11 ай бұрын
@@Didleeios88yea, but to further the analogy, life doesn’t make sure you can lift a weight before giving you one. So you’ll end up hurting yourself if you’re not ready and trained how to lift. Then that injury just makes it harder to lift weights in the future, an end less cycle until you ask someone to help.
@Didleeios8811 ай бұрын
I agree with you entirely. If someone is not lifting the weight correctly they do indeed need some support/education. At the same time I think we live in a generation where people believe the solution is for someone else to lift the weight for them. This does not allow us to get stronger. Sometimes even the struggle to figure out how to lift the weight is more valueable then being told how. The truth is that rather than "help" from strangers in an app (or even the therapist couch), we need empathy from real people in our lives with whom we have real two-way relationships@@Zack-bl2gg

@@Didleeios88naw brother that's the issue. You can't get stronger if you can't lift the weight properly. Think of actual therapy like a personal trainer. Is it easier and safer with a personal trainer (real therapist)? Hell yeah. Just because something is harder doesn't mean it's better.

For anyone who hasn't already heard: The whole expression "pulling oneself up by one's bootstraps" seems to have originated with a story about a man being inconvenienced by a stone wall across his land or something, and the newspaper writer joked about how the people building the wall must imagine he will pull himself up by the straps of his boots (that is, _lift himself into the air_ ) in order to cross this wall when needed. It was not a phrase for "get a grip", it was a phrase for "being expected to do something literally impossible". I may be slightly off on some of the exact details, but that was the gist of it.
@m0L3ify10 ай бұрын

Whatever the origin, the modern meaning isn't to "get a grip" or "do something impossible." It means to take personal responsibility for your life. To exhaust all of your effort and resources trying to fix your own problems, before deciding that it's hopeless and asking for help. If you give up too quickly, then you will never know what you are truly capable of.
@movieloverfan188 ай бұрын
Yes for a long time this was meant as a joke, describing someone who said they did it All on their own, especially the children if the wealthy thinking they were self made men. And let's face it, there's very few companies in the world that aren't shady once you look into them. If they advertise something good about themselves, or how they're doing something for the people, they're just doing it to draw more people in and not because they actually care about the well being of their consumers, and most are going to be doing something far worse behind the scenes that the average consumer will never know about unless they really go out of their way to dig into it.

Lmao every one of those meal service plans are a joke/scam. The ONLY people who can afford ANY of them are people with more than middle-class incomes who already spend over 100$ a week on food. A WEEK, NOT MONTH, A FKING WEEK. Like, Chef's Plate and Hello Fresh are hilariously fking awful for cost. I, being poor like I am, originally thought these would be options for me. NO, OF COURSE THESE ARE FOR RICH LAZY PEOPLE. 😆 What WAS I thinking... Hello Fresh, for example, is 1-5 MEALS a WEEK, so not a full week's worth of food, it's like 1 meal a day for 5 days, or even less, if you are indeed feeding the minimum 2 people. If not, then you have double portions so there's some leftovers to stretch I guess... But it's still not a full week of food. BUT THE PRICES? For the "first box" with that "first" discount, you can get a box as cheap as like maybe 30$ Canadian before tax and shipping - but you pay PER WEEK and the very next box would be full price at like 70-100$ (before shipping and taxes, CAD). If you actually add that up, even at the cheapest non-discounted price, that's STILL 60$ x 4 (so 240$ a month on food - double the standard budget for a 1-2 person adult household). It's not only not affordable, it's providing LESS goods for the cost of DOUBLE what you'd have paid just going shopping at the grocery store 1-2x a month. For one week of food (that will likely last into the next week) it's less than 50$ for me and my partner. That's our eggs, bread, butter if needed, veggies, fruits (fresh or frozen for either of these) and a couple other things like rice or pastas. I've gotten us by on 25$ for the week before, that's not so hard to do if you're not buying super expensive fresh ingredients. At NO POINT would I consider it a valuable use of my money to be buying a box service that's going to cost me DOUBLE the national household budget for groceries FOR A FAMILY WITH AT LEAST ONE CHILD IN IT for PORTIONED food packets that can't even be stretched or used variably? For that kind of money, just go get the actual full products and have more than 5 meals a week. :|

Ended up stopping and only have a psychiatrist now, but at least feel there is more help through medication than talk therapy (not that talk therapy would ever help with most of my current symptoms like fatigue which don't matter if I am happy or not). It really speaks to how little we value mental health here in the US that in-person therapy (let's say up to four sessions a month) isn't fully covered by even the most basic health insurance at the very least. So, what do some of the people who can't afford in-person therapy do? They turn to a scam like Better Help. I appreciate you guys shining a light on this online therapy stuff. It sounded way too good to be true.
@thoughtlesskills11 ай бұрын
In 'murrica mental health isn't health and teeth aren't either. Seriously though, lack of mental health also pushes people into way too much 'alternative medicine' like homeopathy. The American dream is alive and well if you are looking to screw some people over.
@Dnichols61911 ай бұрын
In person therapy isn't great either. CBT and DBT are great tools, but you don't need one-to-one therapy to learn the important concepts. In fact, it works better in a group so you can get multiple perceptives, social solidarity and the opportunity to view problems with some objectivity. It's also cheaper in a group which is why the medical industry really prefers you have your own individual therapist. Online therapy shows the glaring inadequacies, but the metaphor used in the video, "Maybe the weight isn't that heavy," is pretty spot on in my experience. I once told a therapist about an issue I was having at work, they told me it's all in my head. Then when I had solid evidence that what I knew was occurring was actually occurring, they told me I need to increase my "tolerance." I asked how I could do that, they said theyd research that and they never really got back to me. Essentially they tried to get me to gaslight myself and when that didn't work anymore they told me to, "toughen up." And I, being a fool, gave them several thousand dollars for it too.
@timothym939811 ай бұрын
@@Dnichols619 The problem with a lot of group therapy, is that when you pile a group of people with similar problems together they can reinforce and normalize negative behaviors and thoughts, rather than actually working to cope/change those negative patterns. It can easily become a reinforcing issue of "I don't need to change my behavior, all of these other people behave just like me too, the world just needs to change to accommodate me!". This is a well documented problem, especially in anger management and other impulsive response type issues. Particularly if the impulsive response has been normalized in their environmental upbringing.

I think the second biggest issue is that people think that mental therapy is something everyone should always be doing. It's supposed to be used like physical therapy, you go for a while after an injury to get yourself back to full strength and then stop going and use the techniques you learned to do any maintenance you need on your own.

Therapy is like every other service. You have to do your research, get a therapist that both understands you and is competent in your issue, and then be willing to do the work. Lots of snake oil providers, but then lots of good ones also. Some who provide services for free or at greatly reduced rates. Now do a spot on clients who expect the therapists to be available 24-7, charge less than a nail manicure, and tell them exactly what they want to hear, while ignoring any evidence based strategies they are taught, and awaiting a miracle in one session.

An alcoholic friend who blames everything past and present on her ex-husband went to therapists. Did they help her with her underlying problem, which is her alcoholism? No. They told her what she wanted to hear and that her drinking was a normal reaction. So she keeps drinking...her teeth are falling apart...she can't stay upright some days, and keeps falling over and being taken to Emergency. The Ambos even used to put AA cards in her pockets. Replace addiction to alcohol with addiction to religion. That's not really helping :P

I'm a combat veteran with PTSD, I got therapy through the VA, but no longer go. I've found other ways of settling my mind. This video doesn't talk about ways to help yourself, that's a bit dark. If you're all messed up, be it depression, anxiety, PTSD (my issues) or something else, you CAN (and will) get better. Just start very small. Start your day with something like making your bed (what I make sure to do when feeling bad), or doing a chore you've been putting off. Accomplishing one small thing will set you up to accomplish another, or at the very least will mean you did something positive. Accomplishing goals no matter how small they may be, will be another mental check for you. I know even the most simple tasks can seem impossible when depression is hitting you hard, but just get one done and I promise, if at least for a moment, you'll feel better. And remember whoever you are, somebody out there loves you. Now go make your bed.

The problem is that if you are neurodivergent or have a debilitating mental illness, there's no way to tell what parts of your experiences are normal human things and which are symptoms. Before I tried ADHD meds I thought I was the problem. Before I sought help for the first time I thought being miserable and having nothing to live for was normal. At that point I had literally forgotten what it was like to be happy and content with life, and I thought it was just an impossible thing to achieve. I was told by a psychologist in 2020 that I didn't have ADHD and as a result I nearly dropped out of university and nearly took my own life. Only after I actually got diagnosed and started meds did things start getting better and now that I know that many of the things I experience aren't "normal" I can take action deal with them so that they don't ruin my life. Considering that mental health institutions are consistently failing mentally unhealthy people who are seeking help, I don't think we as a society should be putting the blame on the people who are just trying to get help and fix things. Self-diagnosing thought TikTok isn't a solution, but shaming struggling people is moving even further away from the solution. Mental health care needs to be more accessible, then people won't self-diagnose thought TikTok

You can see a licensed psychologist for about 60 an hour on zoom. You can also negotiate with in-person therapists to ask for their uninsured rate. They might have spots available for those in need or if your needs are greater than your insurance cover. Psychiatry can be pretty inaccessible but you can sometimes find GPs who have clinical experience in mental health and who will see you as a GP (and get insurance cover) and work with you on medication if you need it. It isn't ideal, but this isn't an ideal system
@bakaichigo11 ай бұрын
T_T yeah that 60$/hr is about what I found out here too, and that is STILL far too expensive for literally anyone on disability or welfare and even for most people making under 40k a year, depending on where they live here (in Canada). That adds up to about 240$/month that most of the people who need the services cannot afford (at least here). At least we CAN get referred to a psychiatrist easily enough, even if it does sometimes take a bit of a wait, and there are group programs that you can get onto waiting lists for after doing lengthy interviews over the phone that you also have to wait on a long waiting list for... The system is broken and no one is fixing it. :(

Most people in Therapy stay in it indefinitely as mentioned with the "more therapy" gag but also most people I have known on it have just gotten worse, since not all therapists are the same, most are incompetent. In the end it is better to have one friend or sibling willing to listen and share their opinion then the most expensive therapist. Ever hear of the series Persona? based on Jungian Psychology it is basically its thesis that interpersonal and emotional issues are solved by talking to friends.

The out going people overload themselves with 20 or 30 "friends" and never really experience any of them. While introverts its easier then ever to rarely if ever need to deal with people. The folks in the middle do alright but they are getting to be a smaller and smaller group as people get pulled into one or the other two groups too easily.

After working for multiple fast food places during my teenage years through early 20's I can attest that despite wearing gloves most fast food employees scratch their asses, wipe their face, pick their nose, etc while in the process of assembling the over-priced, low-quality burgers you purchase. When I worked at an Arby's I once saw a co-worker drop a roast beef and cheddar sandwich on the ground (it fell apart) then pick it up, wipe it off with his glove, add some more roast beef on top, an extra squirt of cheese, then put the bun back on, wrapped it, and put it in the bag for the drive-thru customer like nothing happened. I mentioned this to our boss and he didn't give a shit and actually thanked the other employee for not wasting product. The fucking sandwich fell apart, landed meat/cheese-first on the ground, and got served. I don't know if you've ever worked in fast food but the floors get greasy and filthy and eating that could give a person food poisoning. I also used to work at a KFC and I remember when another employee was clearly sick but showed up and while battering the chicken he was coughing all over it and spraying mucus while doing so. I told him I'd take over and most of the chicken had green phlegm all over it so I started throwing it away and my boss wrote me up for it. He said I was wasting product and when I mentioned why I did so he told me to not worry about because it got fried anyways. Another time I worked at McDonald's and literally saw another worker re-adjust her pad (she was on her period I assume) with her glove in between assembling food, she didn't wash her hands or change her gloves. Worked at a Sonic Drive-In as well and seen multiple issues there but one of the worst was when an employee dropped an order of tots and then scooped them all off the ground with his gloves and then put them back in the carton, seen a coworker who clearly had the flu have nasal drainage in a persons milkshake as well. Yeah... I don't eat fast food anymore lol.
