She started with a deeper tone because at the time a harder, rock sound was popular, and she did not want to be seen as too "poppy". Over time and with more training, the purer and less restrictive voice of hers came through.

The one thing i will always say about her over most singers, she ALWAYS enunciates every word. no slurring or laziness. crisp and clear. she even wrote a song for someone else that went super popular, looking at you kelly clarkson :P

I think that her labels has been her biggest enemy. I remember that her 4th album was supposed to be released in 2009 however they’re were refused to release it bc it seemed not to be commercial enough for the music industry at that time so I took her 4 years to release goodbye lullaby but unfortunately she was already being overshadowed with new artist like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Kesha....

I'm an lbs (Avril fan) and I really love how her voice define the era because the best peak of her voice is in The Best Damn Thing era (2007) when it was so much high then suddenly in 2013 her voice become some kind of husky and different, I really love her she's my childhood princess🥰

I was a huge Avril fan in high school, I probably watched every single live performance of hers there was on youtube untill the last album and listening to her now I can confidently say that she's a better singer now in 2020 than she ever was. She started being a lot more playful with her singing, she adds more vibrato and even runs and her voice generally sounds more agile and polished

I went to see her in concert when she came to Portland on her last your and I LOVED every second of it. I remember hearing she was coming out with Head Above Water and it became one of my favorite albums. Knowing that she wrote it while she was in the hospital broke my heart because you can feel the emotion in every word she sings both in the studio and live versions. She also had 3 freaking costume changes! Definitely knew how to put on a show!

She is an Artist with capital A! She is so good. She defines 00s music. I am so glad I grew up listening to her music...quality! The ease with which she sings is amazing. She never strains and is very very rarely our of tune. True musician! Man, ai love this girl. She might not have the range of Aguilera, but her musicality def makes her a better performer. (I love Xtina don't come at me) P.s I will never get over her vocals from The Black Star Tour. They just don't appeal to me. She was trying real hard to sound deeper.

I totally agree with you Georgina! I feel like her vocals really improved very much and her last album, Head Above Water, is for me the best music she's ever given us. Of course, Girlfriend, Sk8er Boi, When You're Gone, Best Damn Thing etc. etc. are songs that will never get old HOWEVER all the songs on Head Above Water are just amazing with perfect lyrics. My favorites are Warrior, Souvenir and I Fell In Love With The Devil. Thank you for looking at Avril ♥

Her vocals have improved a lot. I followed her from the very start and she was quite pitchy at times and she sang her songs too low. I think I it was just her trying to be cool and have more attitude compared to the Britney vibe that was popular at the time. She learned a lot over the years. I always loved her voice. So edgy and different. Shame she doesn't get much publicity anymore these days. She has so much to offer.

The clip from 2012 sounds more like old avril but you can tell she had vocal training

Her best vocals were in the 2006-2009 era. Now she has too much nasal qualities in her voice that don't help her. The nasality has increased even more in the Love Sux era. You can hear it especially in her lower register. It's also quite evident she has trouble with breath support since she doesn't sing most her lines these days and let's the crowd and vocal backing tracks do the work for her. It also doesn't help at all that she mostly sings like with singers like Machine Gun Kelly and Mod Sun who also don't habe great live singing voices. I hope she will return to her glory days one day. The difference in her vocals from the golden The Best Damn Thing era is striking. Her new album Love Sux is amazing and doesn't have the much nasality so they either found a preamp / mic combination that nullified the nasal qualities or her voice changes its qualities depending on atmosphere and country weather characteristics. This happens to me quite a lot of times and I have very different support mechanics for my voice depending on where I have slept and where I have been for the day.
