I must say... it's a bit tricky for me. Wargaming is a very expensive hobby and the models are very expensive as well, but so are statues. Regular Funkos go for 15-20€ and that's somewhat mainstream. Wargaming is very niche and you're basically not only buying a model, you're paying for the development, the lore behind it, the ecosystem, the Games Workshop stores around the globe, maybe some brexit tax fees for shipping and tax... there is a lot that goes into it. I'm okay paying 100€ a month for a new box of models, some paint, new books, brushes, gadgets etc. but I get that not everyone can. I see the lure of 3D printer, but I don't like to bother with all of what comes with it. I'd rather safe some money buy going to a GW reseller who often have give a discount.

Last year GW ran £150m pre tax profit off £352m revenue. If they were to halve their prices like you suggest they would have made a loss of £25m, and if they kept that up they would go bankrupt very quickly. I agree GW are pricey but they aren't that overpriced!

Ok just have to say, the part of by telling people to just 3D print stuff doesn't help...not quite true. It is because other youtubers kept talking about it and showing the models off that I now have a 3D printer; and I will be able to make things that I'd otherwise never have been able to have before. As far as "shiny resin" goes, I think that's very much dependent on the type used, I'd say GW plastic is shiner than mine XD. I will agree on some points though. Don't get into 3D printing to stick it to GW... it's hurts them as much as a toddler punching you, they'll be fine; do 3d printing so you can expand your arsenal. As you said, it's another tool, same as when I got an airbrush. It does have its headaches..I failed a couple attempts due to missing a step in the instuctions and it was infuriating, but I figured it out.However, getting past the hardships in 3D printing is no harder than getting past the hardships in painting (edge highlighting, NMM, glazing, etc..). All in all say a 3D printer is a great tool and investment and people should help spread the word so others can see how far its come and what can be accomplished. However, I get that it's not for everyone, and that's fine as well.

With regard to your comments on 3D printing: there are still people out there who have no idea about it. There have been numerous occasions where I have shown off something I have printed, and have then had to explain what 3D printing is. In most cases, the people in question have been in their fifties, as I am. I have always wanted a Necron army, but have been unable to afford one (I live in Australia, where GW stuff is ridiculously expensive, and out of reach of low income earners, or pensioners). Recently, I discovered “One Page Rules”, and joined their Patreon. I now have access to the files I need to print an entire “Robot Legions” army, in resin, for the smaller figures, and PLA for things like Tyrants and Doom Tanks. I have had the machines for a couple of years, each, so they do not figure into my costs. I will be able to print my entire army for a very small fraction of the cost of an equivalent GW army…

I completely agree regarding trying to support other game systems in the miniature wargaming marketplace. I referred to it as a "buycott" and it's something that's done in other industries, to great effect. Supporting other systems increases the competition, and it means that Games Workshop will have to work harder to our money. And this would force them to adopt consumer friendly practices. Unfortunately right now we're trapped in a cyclical relationship, and we're on a certain upswing of bad behavior from GW. Still, the hobby is growing and I just hope that too many new players don't get burned!

The time and cost required to start 3D printing isnt huge, but it is an entirely new hobby to learn about. If you are printing for DND or other TTRPGS you are likely to get more out of it since finding the model you want from a company is hard and sometimes characters are out there as hell. Or I dont want to spend 50 bucks on a dragon. Theres no tournaments or bans on these things because competitive TTRPGs arent a big thing. For wargaming It is inconvienient to print entire armies especially if you want to play GW games, since its unlikely youll be allowed to play at tournaments. The best use for 3D printing in war gaming is terrain and getting super cheap blank bases. Maybe even storage solutions. The best warhammer models dont make use of the good sides of 3D Printing. Especially if you are talking 40k. Everything is big and round and fun and it feels like a waste of resin since there isnt the kind of detail that resin printers excel at. It can be great for bits, like little skulls or bottles, I love printing for silly base stuff, but whole models just arent worth it, unless you want old hammer. Also if your using FDM to build tanks or big mechs you are spending a lot of time printings, sanding, priming, sanding again all before you can finally paint. If you arenr interested in 3d printing as its own hobby its just nor worth it. As a TTRPG player and DM 3D printing is baller. I enjoy the process. Places like Loot Studios spoil DND and DND adjacent player with fantastic sculpts that I think are gorgeous and rivals what Wizkids and GW put out but each one is a resin statue and isnt the best for gaming nor for havinh a diverse army. Printing will never kill GW because buying is easier,

I agree with the fact that 3d printing is a hobby in itself that isn't for everyone, but I have to respectfully disagree with the idea that it isn't a threat to GW. While you make a very good point about how it can indirectly encourage people to buy GW products, the strides 3d printing has made even in the last few years (cheaper printers, better prints, tons of STLs, etc.) surely has popped up on GW's radar and partially explains them cracking down on their IP. As someone who has bounced back and forth between printing/buying models, yeah, there is some more work/initial investment in printing vs. buying kits - but not *that* much more. And the price difference is very stark the more you print. I think one of the main reasons why GW is still going strong is that there is a lot of folks who just prefer to buy and BUILD kits - it's also its own hobby and can bring joy that splicing 3d models on meshmixer can't provide. That being said, I think GW will lose *some* market share to the 3d printing market, even if the overall market continues to grow as people get into the hobby as a whole.
@heretic192

I consider myself someone whose biggest joy in the hobby comes from the modelling aspect. I like to build plastic kits, but its not like that does not take a lot of time, especially if they are a bit older and have lots and lots of mold lines. The time investment in setting up the printer etc until cleaning the final print by swirling it in alcohol is really not that big of a deal compared to removing the mold lines from a box of miniatures. And since you can print individual components like arms, legs, torsos and heads etc the modelling aspect is not lost at all. I actually think the fun of making individual models is multiplied by infinity because i can print whatever i need in whatever size i want for my kitbashes. But its not for everyone for sure, lets face it, you need (or rather should have) a dedicated room for your printer and not everyone has a house or apartment big enough to sacrifice an entire room for hobby stuff.

3D printing is definitely the next big thing. Wargaming may be niche, but 3D printing has applications across a vast variety of hobbies and industries. Regardless of what wargamers do, 3D printers are going to keep getting more powerful, easier to use, and more widespread. The quality they put out is constantly going up. And you don't even NEED to own one or be into doing it yourself. There are more and more small businesses out there that will sell you printed miniatures. You can buy them and paint them as easily as their store-bought equivalent. And the odds are going up that you have a friend or acquaintance with a printer who will fire off some prints for you. And GW doesn't care? Sure, that's why they're hiring "Infringement Assistants" whose entire job is aggressively combing websites in order to get alternatives to their official stuff taken down. They don't seem to share your belief that squads of 3D printed marines are good for their business.

No need for negativity, life's to short for that. As for making my own, nah im good on that front. If I was going to do that effort for anything, I'd be making my own game. I think I agree with a lot of your points about 3D printing. I had an FDM printer for a while but running it was a hobby in of itself and I just couldn't get motivated by that. As for Space Hulk, I reckon that if/when GW release a new edition it will be tied in with them finally releasing Primaris Terminators. Terminators are just too iconic to be left to the slow death of the Firstborn, and a new edition of Space Hulk would be a great way to introduce new, taller, Terminator models.

There're a lot of things mixing here. I think 3d printing brings new competition and that's good for the whole mini market, and yes, it doesn't "hurt" GW but now they've to compete to a new challenge, and not just product wise but HR wise too, what if it's more convenient for their artists to be independent patreon artists? . Also, you mentioned that you don't want to deal with 3d printing "peculiarities" and go directly to paint... but that's already a very crafty work, I can imagine people who is already very craft willing to get even more crafty. I've seen some miniature painters going through a lot of work for customizing GW models good enought to support magnets, and therefore have some articulation, well parametrized printed models could deal with that just out of the box. People is upset because they have been paying for a premium brand that: - Doesn't pay well to their artists. - Has a shitty fan management. - The overpricing of several models is obviously obcene (comparable 3d printed models cost 10 times less without exagerations, something even 50 times less), they can have the most blessed plastic in the world, but they're doing something wrong if a 3d printed house model is that much of a cost save. - You have to assemble several models and for having a minimal articulation you need a gigantic work, while from 3d printers is all the other way around, you can just print an articulable assembled model. I bet people would be really happy to pay for a customizable 3d miniatures oriented software, in which you can select, for exmaple, a marine squad, and there you choose to make them articulable, the weapons they will use, and add or remove any piece they like/dislike, but if you don't want to do all that job, then getting a box of a space marine squad shouldn't cost a fortune neither. Aditionally, wouldn't be 3d printers an aditional source of people comming to this kind of hobby? I mean, I'd rather practice painting skills in cheap unnoficial models than in official ones. I think 3d printers can open a whole new world of content, hobbies and jobs. Stores for 3d printing files, software for minis customization, artists uploading their content and charging for it + getting money from streaming their job, 3d printer experts who can charge you a little sum for printing a complex model and do some extra job over it. Nowaday's GW won't survive if they don't change fast eough, and I'm talking from now to 5 years.

Your take comes from someone that actually play the game that GW has created. So 3d printing seems like an addition to the physical part of the hobby that is using models. You may still support GW by playing and showing your army that may have 3d printed bits. But I'm not playing the game. I started buying GW models because I enjoyed how they look (AdMech) and I enjoyed painting them (also GW is the most avaliable miniature company in my country). When I bought 3d printer I stopped buying GW models because I don't need to buy them anymore. There are a lot of creators which scuplts I prefer rather than buying physical models. So in my case GW lost a client. I did not buy tons of models so losing 200$ won't hurt much, but it's still money lost for GW. I'm not saying that this will destroy GW, but it kinda impacts them as a company.

What every reviewer refuses to see, but GW has already seen as a company that respects itself (not its clients), is the scale.Yes 200 wont hurt them.But even if 500 people think they way you do (and its highlly possible this happens), it means 100.000 loss of potential revenues. This is nothing to scuff upon even for larger companies.That is the reason of the witchunt GW has initated against stl databses and groups

I honestly think the main problem with 3D printing right now is all the maintenance and cleaning required. We already have to clean and maintain a ton of other stuff for our hobby (brushes, airbrushes, glue etc.) Once we get a 3D printer that is 1.great print quality with no print lines, 2. is as easy to operate as a smart phone and finally 3. self cleaning. That is when you will see a huge shift. By that time I am sure GW will probably have STC sales (probably based around a NFT style blockchain security so that the STC can only be printed a limited amount of times.)

I stopped buying physical models, and moved completely to 3D printing. But it is indeed a Hobby itself, and most people don't have the time. So I agree that 3D printing won't be a gamechanger for the whole market. It's like anyone could build their own furniture, yet most people will buy it simply because it's way easier to just buy something, than to spend the time to learn how to do it and then actually do it. Of course you can save money and get better results by crafting it yourself, yet the market isn't affected by those few people that are dedicated to their furniture crafting.

Injection molding is a superior mass production process compared to 3D printing. 3D printing is ideal for what it used to be called- rapid prototyping. Atomizing wargaming might even help monolithic GW. But more importantly it eases people into designing, sculpting, etc. Any system with more than like 2 variables requires mathematical to predict and wargaming has like...a million variables.
