With honey blocks now added to the game, and them not sticking to slimeblocks, the sky really is the limit when it comes to building bonkers piston doors. It's never been easier to build huge designs, with very beautiful opening/closing sequences!

They can, because they also have the added functionality of carrying any entities on top of them along with them, essentially making them more useful than slime blocks. I can't think of all too many situations where you'd be like "damn, this is cool and all but I really wish whoever stands on top of this honey block didn't stick to it". It's something slime blocks should've done to begin with.

For a cool locking design, place the door in the open position, then put a lever on either side. Then it can only be opened from the side it was closed from.

I too had your problem, but then i discovered the wonders of KEY! Its a great tool to get past these pesky things! Simply take 2 sticks and three iron, go to a workbench and make a line of iron in the upper line and make a line from the sticks in the middle (the middle middle square and the lower middle square) and then go to an amboss, rename it officially KEY and TURN THESE PIECES OF SHIT INTO SCRAPE! BURN THEM IN THE LAVA LAKES OF THE NETHER! LET THEM DISAPPEAR IN THE INVINITE VOID OF THE END! SACREVICE THEM TO THE CACTUS GOD OR LET THEM BUUUUURRRRRRNN!!!! If you followed all of these steps you should never againe have problems with iron doors again😆

It reminds me of an ancient video, where Grian and Mumbo had a "friendly competition" and one category was entrances. Grian won the category, because he built a huge Arc de Triumph (Arc de Grian) which dwarved a 15x5 piston door (not sure of the exact numbers). My thoughts in that last door is that it means one could make a giant gate door for a castle or castletown entrance with a lot less redstone circuitry. That makes me feel good, because I've been wanting exactly that but I hadn't thought about this.

for the hipster door, I had quite the issue of the door not de contracting at the same time on a future MC mod for 1.12.2, to fix this you have to apply both signals (the glass pillar thing) to the switch itself, it was really hard to figure out, but it was pretty awesome finally nailing that redstone contraption!
