Soap & Clay is a family owned business operating in Washington State, but started out online thanks to Mrs. Soap & Clay's kickass brother and his amazing web design skills. The business was started as a tribute to Mrs. Soap & Clay's grandmother, the OG maker in the family that cultivated everyone's love for the DIY life. The studio/retail shop opened in 2017 on 6th Ave in Tacoma, and immediately began teaching soap, bath bomb, lotion, and scrub classes to the makers and maker enthusiasts of the PNW. In 2019, the pottery studio opened as well, making the soap shop a busy place full of artistic energy every minute of the day.
Mrs. Soap & Clay has been featured on Business Spotlight, New Day Northwest, and was awarded a coveted place on the South Sound's 40 under 40 list in 2019, an award given to the most influential business people under the age of 40 each year. She cried when she walked up to the podium to accept the award. A lot.
Drawing from her chemistry background and her maker spirit, Mrs. Soap & Clay infuses her favorite things into her soapy designs and creates products that are fun to see, use, and learn to make. Stick around for this ride - she'll take you on a great one.

I do the water/honey mix added at trace because I have done it other ways and sometimes the honey didn't incorporate as well. It's an extra step but it has given me the most consistent results. It doesn't darken very much either.

I hold back some of the water when I mix the lye. I add the little bit of water with the honey, and add in at a very lite trace. I don't get as much spotting or scorching.

I put my honey in the lye water when it is cooling down. It turns brown, which is the colour I want for the bar. Winning!!

Big yikes on the wasp brigade 😬 I am so thankful I’m not allergic to our buzzy friends because they always seem to be around in my yard lol The honey thing is so timely! My next planned soap is a turmeric and honey bar! I haven’t been able to make it because the girls at work found a kitten that I volunteered to take in and I’ve been spending all my time with her instead 😅

I've added it all 3 ways. I prefer to add it to the water before the lye. It scorches but I don't mind. I noticed that the soaps with honey don't get dos. One recipe I used a lot had 40% sunflower oil and the only time it got dos was when I forgot the honey. Could be coincidence though.

Putting the honey into your warm oils, makes so much sense! Thanks for the tip. I'm glad you're ok and didn't get attacked; I'm also glad you weren't 'alone'. I still haven't done the Discord thing🤦‍♀️

Hey thanks for this one! I just got some of my uncle's honey and I am going to make him and my aunt some honey soap and some with the beeswax he gave me (once I figure out how to clean it). I am so impressed with that color!

Ha! I used honey in my soap today! I put mine directly into my hot oils. I soap colder than normal (under 100F) when using honey though. Don’t want to scorch it! 😁

I'm absolutely on board with the discoloration, because those are beautiful bars, but would adding the honey to water prior to mixing it in help to keep the acceleration a little slower? I'm so sorry I missed the Discord, seems I've been missing an awful lot these days.

This is the start of the mad season; we will all be missing loads of things until the end of the year! In the water it does loosen up the batter a bit, which is why people enjoy adding it to the traced soap.

How much honey you need to have this effect? 1% 5% of oil weight?
@MrsSoapAndClay
@MrsSoapAndClay 2 жыл бұрын
For the coloring? I tend to soap the honey at 1-3% of the oil weight, depending on how much bubble increase I’ll need. This particular one was soaped on the higher range of that, so I would try 3% if you’re going for the color.

When you add honey to melted fats what change do you expect and observe in the lather from the cured soap?
@MrsSoapAndClay
@MrsSoapAndClay 2 жыл бұрын
Great question! As I discussed in the video, honey is used as a type of sugar in soapmaking to increase the bubbly nature of a soap. Many people add honey or sugars to soaps that historically have a low bubble - castile et al - to increase the lather payoff.
@MsAubrey
@MsAubrey 2 жыл бұрын
I notice more bubbles for sure when adding honey to my melted oils. Especially in my palm kernel flake soaps. A little better moisture too.

Is it okay to add honey to a milk soap?
@MrsSoapAndClay
@MrsSoapAndClay 2 жыл бұрын
You can do that! Keep in mind that milks also have sugar though, so the potential to overheat the batch is higher. Otherwise, it’s a lovely idea!
