Soap & Clay

Soap & Clay

Күн бұрын

It's finally time to test these soaps! Today on the channel we are testing the lather of five soaps we've made this week. The coconut milk soap, almond milk soap, honey soap, beer soap, and aloe soap. These soaps were all made on the same day and had the same five days to cure.
Keep in mind, this is still fresh soap. As soaps continue to lose their water weight, their lather will stabilize and settle into the final product. So the lather in this test isn't necessarily what you will see after full cure, but this tends to provide a good indicator of what to expect in the finished bar.
All soaps from the big lather test can be found on the website - the beer and aloe soaps are staples in the line, but the milk and honey soaps are limited edition.

Soap & Clay is a family owned business operating in Washington State, but started out online thanks to Mrs. Soap & Clay's kickass brother and his amazing web design skills. The business was started as a tribute to Mrs. Soap & Clay's grandmother, the OG maker in the family that cultivated everyone's love for the DIY life. The studio/retail shop opened in 2017 on 6th Ave in Tacoma, and immediately began teaching soap, bath bomb, lotion, and scrub classes to the makers and maker enthusiasts of the PNW. In 2019, the pottery studio opened as well, making the soap shop a busy place full of artistic energy every minute of the day.
Mrs. Soap & Clay has been featured on Business Spotlight, New Day Northwest, and was awarded a coveted place on the South Sound's 40 under 40 list in 2019, an award given to the most influential business people under the age of 40 each year. She cried when she walked up to the podium to accept the award. A lot.
Drawing from her chemistry background and her maker spirit, Mrs. Soap & Clay infuses her favorite things into her soapy designs and creates products that are fun to see, use, and learn to make. Stick around for this ride - she'll take you on a great one.

My milk soaps lather huge! I think it has to do with putting milk in lye vs in oils. I put my milk in my oils. It doesn't ever scorch. Or perhaps it is my recipe. I use 25 coconut, 25 palm, 10 castor , 10 cocoa butter, and 30 sunflower. This is my base recipe. I do change things up depending on what I'm trying to achieve, but yeah thats my base recipe. Jill

I really appreciate you taking the time to do this research...it helped me immensely. I have never tried real beer(used the powder), but being a new soaper, I am adventurous...lol, that will be coming up on my radar. Thanks again!

I have found that real milk (goat or cow) preforms way better then non dairy milks because they have natural sugars and fats in them - my preferred milk to soap with is powdered buttermilk - add the powder to the oils and blend it in well before adding the lye water.

I followed the advice of a few soap makers & include the following unless adding high sugar milks (especially cows milk) in which case I figure total sugars in milk & deduct from this - Per 1000 g total oil weight I add 2% citric acid (for hard water - dont forget to adjust NaOH as you'll need more), 3% sugar which is inexpensive & boosts lather in a big way, 1-2 % sodium lactate, 2% non iodized salt, 3-4% clay (if coloring w clay I do mostly white kaolin then enough of the chosen color to yield what Im after (red & green clay are drying so this is why I start w/ the gentler white kaolin. I dont always add 5% castor oil but it does add a real slip to the soap that feels good.

I'm about to test coconut milk & banana skins in a week or so. Just waiting on my unadulterated coconut milk. Based on this test, of yours I will also include some local wildflower honey or coconut sugar. I think the combination of the 3 will be amazing for a friend's boys who have sensitive skin. Did you use sodium lactate in all of these bars? That's something I include in all of mine & I noticed you do as well, but not sure if it was in all of these soaps.

Joseph Behunin some local that I was able to pick up at the grocery store. I usually use something from Beer Star for this one, but closures have made it tough to source most things. 😭

Of course! Why wouldn’t it be? After saponification is complete, the lye is gone. ☺️
