Ranger I just started watching your vids from the beginning. My first memory of you isn't until the night I met you, Pacman, & Smokemaster in VA but we (Too Ez, 8th Gear & I) were in Hiawassee the same time & at the brewery at the same time. we just sitting inside. Watching others videos brings back so many things I kinda forgot about!!

Hey Dos!! Thank you for watching! And that’s so cool we were at the same brewery! That’s such a cool phenomenon of trail life. Idk if you met treats and Barbie, but rewatching my videos, I saw them at a lunch spot in Tennessee way before I remember meeting them officially in Virginia. So cool!

Hey Maddie…I’ve started watching your AT videos! I am looking forward to learning from you for my own hike someday! Here are some comments that I had to share…I hope you see these even tho you hiked last year…I love that your dad walked some miles with you in the beginning and also the story he shared about you heading off on a Girl Scout trip alone…so precious…you pet both the cat and dog❤your beautiful attitude is contagious…every year I choose 1 or 2 females to follow who are hiking the AT just trying to learn as much as I can and you are the first person who has ever asked herself the same set of questions weekly! What a fantastic idea and so very interesting to see what will change further down the trail…thank you for the entertainment thus far!!

I have learned the companion of contentment is sometimes disenchantment. Yet, Nature bedazzles. Contentment returns. Nature is full of tooth and claw and gentle genius. It is not easy to “be wise, amazed, temperate, furious, Loyal, and neutral, in a moment.” At the moment, it is good you have the ability to live your life to the fullest. Don’t look back unless you plan on going that way. You have dared greatly and your efforts are applauded. Be well. Carry on. Happy Trails!

Great update. You might not be able to sleep because your nervous system is adapting to all of the walking. Love your videos! I've watched a lot of other people's AT hike videos and they all present this fairly glamorous version of the best version of themselves on the trail and how easy everything is, but it's obviously not always like that in real life. I love how real you are, especially about expressing insecurities - I am also fairly shy so I would find it hard to just go up to people and form friendships. It doesn't come so naturally to a lot of people. Awesome job for putting yourself out there and making friends! Really rooting for you :) For podcasts, I wonder if you could do something like listen to 1 episode a day just to give you something to look forward to and make it through the hardest part each day - instead of waiting 2 weeks to listen to anything.

Usually you don't have to worry about theft in the woods in the middle of nowhere as far as your food goes. It might happen closer to road access and not another thru hiker but someone with a vehicle. You will get more excited and happier on the trail as you make more friends and start to enjoy the social aspect of it or if you end up in a tramily. If you are tired and exhausted, try talking to people as soon as you get in camp. Introduce yourself, talk a little and then explain that you are beat, and you need to sleep and that you will see them in the morning. Try to take more breaks instead of getting into camp maybe at noon and being bummed out because there is half a day left yet. It you decide to go further and end up with 20 or 25 mile days this early, it can easily lead to injury. You shouldn't have a 20 mile day until you are at least close to the Smokies. Listen to your body. If you do push a long day, say 20 miles and the next morning you are tired and more sore than normal, just do a 8-10 mile day and take a lot of breaks. You are hiking fast enough that you're not going to get behind in your pace. I'll explain at another time but suffice it to say, in 1990 I had 79 zero days. You're doing great!!! Hike safe, Hike strong, Have fun! geek

Thanks for sharing your trip. It's inspiring to want to do longer walks and maybe a hike. I had big sleep issues all of 2021 and to 2022. Melatonin is only good for short-term use. If you can get your hands on it try valerian root. I also suffer from my mind racing so I find that listening to a KZbin meditation video or something else similar that's calming helps me to focus my thoughts on one thing and then I'm able to fall asleep and over time I've stopped waking up as much at 2am

you dont have to worry about starting slow since you actually trained. A lot of people dont even train at all then try to do like 10+ miles a day and burn out very quick or get injuired on the trail. Thats why they give that advice has a general rule. You put in a lot of work to get ready phsycially tho so you should be good to do whatever milage you want. You already passed one day hiker I was watching who started 5 days before you lol.

I enjoy hearing your thought processes. And yes, a person does not have to join a tramily. There are no rules. You make your own decisions. I decided to be a rebel within a micro-community of rebels (thru-hikers) and hike as myself, Doug, I didn’t take a trail name. It really pissed off some hikers…which I enjoyed.

I get that pulled pork at Walmart. You’re right people don’t want to know what it looks like! lol I like to heat it up and put it on some tortillas for a quick meal. 2 packs will make 3 pulled pork tacos. Glad you are finding community along fellow hikers! Even as an introvert myself I still find I need some human interaction from time to time.
