It was a short run in regards to his athletic peak. Dec 1995 is when Austin debuted in WWF, and June 1996 was King Of The Ring which took him over the top. Aug 1997 was the botched piledriver at SummerSlam, and Austin was never the same wrestler again.

He was right about steve not being able to last ten years because of his injuries. I took the flash of the pan comment as his time at the top wouldn't last long, which it didn't. He was basically full-time as the face of the company three years. Remember, he missed a year for his neck surgery. But what a three years! 98-2002 missing a year in between. Steve is still top three all time which some would say he's #1

HTM was totally right (& has been) in his shoot about HHH, The Rock, & Austin. & for those mad about his comments about Austin: Austin’s body was pretty much completely broken down by the time he got to the WWF. He was a shell of his former self wrestling-wise. The incident with Owen only added to his injuries. HTM’s “flash in the pan” comment may have been a bit too critical, but his overall assessments were 100% correct.
@charleswilson4526
@charleswilson4526 4 күн бұрын
Austin was a short term main event guy which is what HTM is referring to. He was just too beat up, but for the amount of time he had on top, he maximized the hell out of it. He probably thought Rock would be around for several more years but he already had his eyes on Hollywood by 2001. Again, like Austin, he maximized that run on top. Those two had basically what amounted to a few years each on top and they’re arguably the two biggest stars of all time (with Hogan in there) HHH was always a good talent. He may have been over pushed and over emphasized, but he was always a talented guy who could always be relied on

He's still kinda right about The Rock, even without the context of movies. The guy can still wrestle in his 50's. The big breaks from wrestling help, for sure, but his style was always storytelling-based, rather than taking big risks in the ring. To be fair, Austin was similar with his style.. he just had the misfortune of the bad injuries.

Austin a flash in the pan? He was head honcho for 5 years after many years of working his ass off. So he can't regard Austin as a flash in the pan for his wrestling career because it was long and hardworking. And he can't regard Austin as a flash in the pan as far as being over goes.. because he is still a legend.. A flash in the pan, is a quickly forgettable trend, correct? Like pogs. That's why I can't call Austin a flash in the pan. Nobody ever forgot. He is branded into wrestling, maybe even heavier than Hogan now. That shattering glass is the most legendary thing in entertainment.

@@chuckramone3374 Austin was never as big as Hogan. Probably nobody was. Austin drew money at the peak of the attitude era for 2 years in 98 and 99. The most money he made. He was out in most of 2000. Made a comeback in late 2000s. The only thing Austin did was improve the TRP and buyrates and the reason for that was southern wrestling fans paid to see Austin. Austin was never big outside the bubble. His 3:16 shirt sales are also exaggerated. Sure he did sell more because WWF was selling merchandise in malls and supermarkets. In the 80s they didn't do it.
@nwobw
@nwobw 5 күн бұрын
Austin was a flash in the pan. His historic run lasted for 2 years - 98 and 99. 4 if you give him 97 before he was champion and 2001 as a failed heel. Hell, his run honestly wasn't much longer than Goldberg's when you really break it down. Give Goldberg 98 and 99 that's two years. In 98 Goldberg actually rivalled Austin at times in terms of popularity. Austin was insanely successful, but his longevity was nothing compared to Hogan and Cena's time on top. Seriously, Stone Cold had a 2 year run and he was done.
@coolguy298
@coolguy298 5 күн бұрын
@@nwobw technically March 98 till end of 99. I think it was November 99. He came back in October 2000 and that's nearly a year later. Austins peak was Like 1 year and roughly 6 months. I'm not even counting 2001. Hogan was making money for WWF from late 83 till 91 as the top guy. The biggest boom the business had seen. I doubt Austin even sold a 30000 seated on his merit. Goldberg and Hogan sold out 50000 and 90000 seated arenas as the main event. Not taking away that Austin drew well on house shows and merchandise and even TV. He just isn't as big as some people say.

Foley didn't really have to live up to what he did because he went into 90% retirement after 2000. Austin was still over af until he walked out which is why he walked out and work rate had nothing to do with it. Austin became a the biggest star when he stopped working like he did before the neck injury.
