Lovers of "Honolulu Baby" are in for a real treat! Clean sounding production Vitaphone type disc from Laurel and Hardy film, with fantastic 1930s musical number, "Honolulu Baby", heard in its entirety, minus the actors dialog that was mixed later into the finished film! Filmed live with the recording of this record as the master playback disc, then played for filming extra dance scenes. This was not a dub with lip syncing as was the Hollywood practise by 1933. I have matched my 16 mm print to this disc to see how it would be hearing the music without the dialog which masks the song and the piano solo in the film. The results ars delightful. Judge for yourself. ENJOY!~

LOVE IT! I love the staccato of the early 30s. The muted trumpets, and the clarinet section sounds so tight and clean!

released this back in 1982, on an LP which I produced with Marvin Hatley. Before Marvin left the Hal Roach Studios in 1939, thanks to the shortsightedness of a cost-cutting executive named Frank Ross, he went to the editing department and asked if they would assemble a reel of 35mm optical soundtrack of some of the musical sequences he'd done for the studio. The result was about a half-hour's worth of music from "Sons of the Desert," "Way Out West," "A Chump at Oxford" and "Saps at Sea."

I've loved this song sing I first heard it over 30 years ago. Laurel & Hardy reached No. 2 in the UK charts in the mid '70's with "Trail of the lonesome pine" and "Honolulu Baby" was on the reverse. On that record the dialogue was not removed. Your upload is a vast improvement. Last year visited the Laurel and Hardy Museum in Ulverston, birthplace of Stan Laurel. Thank you for uploading this gem.

It's always fine to see pre-production stuff. Was this movie one of the last produced in Vitaphone? I heard, later they made movies with optical sound track and supported some theaters with a Vitaphone version. Or could it simple be, that the music only was recorded on disc, because the better sound?
@smilodon
@smilodon 4 жыл бұрын
No, composer Marvin Hatley had a bunch of transcription discs made for him of this song and several others he'd written while working for Hal Roach back in the 30s when the original source material still existed. Randy Skretvedt, who wrote the definitive book on Laurel and Hardy's films, Laurel & Hardy: The Magic Behind the Movies, had these transferred to audio tape for him and released on record along with some new recordings of Hatley performing back in the early 80s.

HI, THIS IS GREAT! I HOPE THAT YOU DON'T MIND BEING CORRECT ABOUT YOUR JARGON. YOU'RE USING "VITAPHONE" AS A GENERIC WORD FOR THE SYNCHRONOUS SOUND ON DISK PROCESS DEVELOPED BY WESTERN ELECTRIC / BELL LABS. IT WAS TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPED BY WESTERN ELECTRIC / BELL LABS. WESTERN WAS THE MARKETING & SALES COUNTERPART OF BELL LABS. WARNERS WAS THE FIRST MOTION PICTURE PRODUCTION COMPANY TO LICENSE IT. WARNERS CREATED "VITAPHONE" AS ITS EXCLUSIVE TRADEMARK. OTHER STUDIOS ALSO LICENSED THE TECHNOLOGY FROM WESTERN, BUT COULD NOT (LEGALLY) USE THE VITAPHONE TRADEMARK. THE TECHNICAL COMPLEXITIES OF MAKING EDITS USING THE SOUND - ON - DISK HIGHLY INCENTIVIZED THE CONVERSION TO OPTICAL METHODS MERELY 4 YEARS AFTER "VITAPHONE" DEBUTED. BUT FOR A RELATIVELY HIGH % OF THEATER OWNERS THE CONVERSION WAS NOT FINANCIALLY JUSTIFIED. A WORK - AROUND WAS TO DUB OPTICAL MASTERS TO DISKS. THAT SERVICE, I THINK WAS DISCONTINUED IN THE LATE 30s. BY 1931 VICTOR HAD DEVELOPED A VINYL-LIKE PLASTIC THAT THE RCA SUBSIDIARY TRADEMARKED "VICTROLAC". THOSE PRESSINGS HAD THE ADVANTAGES OF BEING FLEXIBLE & THEREFORE MUCH LESS LIKELY TO BREAK. ANOTHER OF ITS FINANCIAL ADVANTAGES WAS THAT THEIR SHIPPING COSTS WERE SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED.
