I’ve never liked that the British government gives knighthoods to pop stars. I think they should be for real service to the nation, not just bringing in money, like for Dr. John Campbell on KZbin, who has helped millions in the UK and worldwide to cope with this pandemic, he really deserves a knighthood. Or you, Dr. Starkey, for your intellectual and history contributions, which have made accessible and popularized (in the best way I mean) English history. This undoubtedly has contributed to more in the academic pursuit of history, benefiting all who learn from history, as well as bringing in tourist funds.

Especially for Pop stars who then have no time for ceremony and who got the honour because one particular prime minister thought that a second rate band should be put on par with the greatest band in history. PS. Prime Minister should have no say in honours at all.

@Helsby Well, what business do honours have in such a young country as Australia. In England the system has a history, not there.

When I think of honours, I am always reminded of the OBE given to David Cameron's hairdresser - for 'Services to Hairdressing'. The ONLY ones now worth anything are those in the specific gift of HM The Queen which is why I value my RVO. These cannot be bought.

A triumph of a video, sir. I've been wandering in the wilderness for a decade, unable to pin down one of the cruxes of why the American Revolution was so different from the French Revolution, and you just nailed it for me in 50 minutes. The aristocrocies, their forms and their functions, as outlined here. Well done, and thank you.

In 2020 I spent eight months on researching (basically looking up newspaper articles) "a certain type of gang" which does "a certain type of adult activity" with "a certain type of minors who could not consent to it" ... and quite a lot of Police Officers have gotten "honours" and fallen up the stairs rather than "going straigth to jail without passing GO". The current "independent anti-slavery commissioner" is one such example, because she hindered the investigations in her district when they came up. There is also Jimmy Savile, which took Maggie Thatcher FIVE ATTEMPTS to get him knighted. She simply didnt get the message.

Oh here we go again, I see (or should I say read) many comments along the lines of what you are (trying) to say here. If you have done so much research would you please get straight to the point and tell us what you have found instead of tiptoeing around the edges and making slight insinuations. I fear you spent eight months researching and acctually found very little.

My distrust of all charities is summed up by this donation. Most of these larger charities are corrupt with those at the top giving themselves extremely large salaries. Hence why I only ever give my money to smaller charities where all my money will be used for the reason I gave it.

So you got an Upper Second. It's worth nothing because Knighthoods, i.e. Firsts, are bestowed for the most improbable of reasons. In this year's Honours List, a man received a Knighthood for..... "Services to the Online Gaming Industry." I had to sit down. Not for helping those poor wretches who are ruined by addiction, but for making a fortune. Oh, and probably donating a significant sum to the Tory Party.

Labour were just as bad. Remember John Prescott ? He spent most of his life as an MP cursing the unfair privilege of the 'tory toffs' and the undemocratic House of Lord's. He gets offered a peerage, and guess what, he accepted it instantly. His dislike of the idea of unelected peerage conveniently forgotten. Ken Livingston, for all his faults, at least stuck to his principles when Cameron offered him a peerage and he turned it down.

I’m looking forward to receiving the Norman Baker (member of the privy council) book titled ‘And What Do You Do’ concerning the RF and their finances, which apparently tells just how much the tax payer donates to the RF upkeep. I wonder if it’ll mention the reported fact that while they were bleating on about Climate Change, how all their properties north of the border (and they are the largest landowners) are totally exempt from any green and environmental laws and charges. When living in England I went with my family to Salisbury. There was a reenactors convention there, so of course, while we were in frot of the cathedral, there was a Roman patrol, speaking Latin, a contingent from the English Civil War and a bear baiting group. We were at a traffic light and there broke out in front of us a debate (this was the bear baiting group, complete with a bear) on whether they should pay attention to the traffic light, since these were not period correct. We also went to Old Sarum and took a tour where the discussion of the rotten boroughs came up.

I've never forgotten the odious Beatrix Campbell getting an OBE for "services to diversity", this being the woman who infamously, with her partner, drove two innocent primary school teachers to the brink of suicide with an entirely spurious Satanic Panic campaign, and for which the High Court awarded them the absolute legal maximum compensation.

Those “Order and Commander” honours just aren’t perceived as as good as a knighthood, one would easily be called Sir X, but not Mr. X, Order or Commander. Also, I think they should break the old rules and reward women who have greatly contributed to the nation with the title “Lady”, rather than reserving that for women whose titles came from their father (Lady given name) or husband (Lady husband’s last name).

Aah yes, Labour who, despite coming late to the party, have proved to be the most effective player. Yet they still pretend to hold the high moral ground, ever ready to point the finger elsewhere, while stashing away their own share of goodies. Still, at least we know they are all equally ready to get down and dirty.

Of course it is a bauble! And any title based on whose womb you popped out of is spurious. The bauble is supposed to be a reminder that you have DONE something noteworthy. In the same way, a medal is in itself nothing more that a piece of shaped metal… it is a reminder of something done.
