EYE SHOT • "Buffalo, New York" • EPISODE 1
Watch Part 2 • EYE SHOT • "Buffalo, N...
Watch Part 3 • EYE SHOT • Buffalo, Ne...
Eye Shot showcases a featured music artist and let hip hop speak for hip hop. We’ll explore the city’s history, racial climate, economic wealth gap, crime rate, and rap music scene through the voice of the hip hop culture bred in that city.
With rap music taking over mainstream, it seems as though everyone is speaking on and for hip hop besides hip hop! “EYE SHOT", a docu-series letting the hip hop culture in cities across the world tell us the side of the story the media hides or misinforms us about. How NWA exposed the world to the rough streets of Compton, the Geto Boys hipping us to how things were handled in Houston, or uncle Luke showing us how the Miami party scene gets lit. Our pilot starts in the streets of Buffalo, New York. With our featured rap artist “Benny the Butcher” and the B.S.F. team.

I’m a teacher at a charter school on the east side of Buffalo. We focus on African and African American infusion to build up our student’s cultural pride. Infusion? How about act like cooked human beings. I was a resource officer, posted for 2 1/2 years. Cultural pride? How about teaching them right from wrong, proper English, how not to go to jail , how not to get knocked up at 13, how to set yourself up for success? You teachers are a joke and part of the problem. The crap I witnessed coming from the teachers and administrators was nauseating. Your retoric, propaganda and agendas destroyed the public schools on this country. Same here bro Iam 🍀 lucky enough to have parents that thought the same way. My dad didn’t have “ self hate” he just knew if you lived in a all black neighborhood that all your services like Utilities, ( electric&Gas) snow removal, potholes, all these “DPW” chores that towns do would definitely be lacking in black an brown areas of town. Services were always “Lacking” but he bought into a “very mixed” race, black, brown, Spanish, middle eastern. Where we didn’t worry

I'm from the riverside area of buffalo I've lived here my whole life I love my city but the senseless killings are getting way out of control. Listen I'm not knocking anybody hustle you do what you feel you must to get by, however if we put that same time and energy into doing something positive we would be able to appreciate each other more. There are real serious things going on in this world that require our attention but we're allowing ourselves to be distracted by negative activities. I don't even really listen to rap no more because the message it sends is been said already let's talk about doing something right. Stop glamorizing the killing and drug game there's no glory in it.

Toronto doesn't have a NFL team so if you want to watch good football and you live in Toronto you must go to Buffalo or Detroit to watch a game. Also every time Toronto Maple Leafs play the Buffalo Sabers in Buffalo we try to make it to the game. We have also been bored on a Friday or Saturday night and driven from Toronto to Buffalo just to eat chicken wings. I guess what I'm trying to say is Buffalo is a nice place to visit! Still it is one of the most politically corrupt cities in NYS but it is an amazing place to grow up and live as long as you do the right things for the right reasons. I've been listening to b.e.n.n.y since 2004-2005. He's transformed alot by himself and his group by leading a great example. You're showing all of these big beautiful houses in North Buffalo - that's a small part. Most of the homes are small cape codes or ranches. It is not primarily Italian - every nationality and ethnic group lives here. Everyone respects one another and is cordial. Don't make it out to be a wealthy area, there are many working class people here - and we choose to respect our differences!!!!

Proud to be from here, 2nd generation Italian/Sicilian born in the USA . But they're speaking FACTS in this video. We really don't leave our neighborhoods we grew up in. And its deeper than that too. South Buffalo and the Irish don't like Italians. First ward? If you're Italian/Sicilian Black Brown you aren't welcome down there. I got people on the east side that don't know shit about the west side. I got people on the west side that don't know shit about the east side. Outside the inner city, people do not cross into the suburbs, and vice versa. Wild. Cause when I travel to other places, it's nothing to visit different neighborhoods and see people from all over in one place. The only time the city really comes together is at festivals and concerts. We need to come together as a whole.

I get it... everyone wants to be known as the city to be afraid of. Unfortunately as a Buff resident since I was 13 years old, it's never been that and still isn't. Definitely street, Definitely hood, definitely can get your issue if you come out here from somewhere else playing like it's sweet. Facts. Just like a lotta other major cities. Never a murder capital tho. And all these other upstate cities tryna vye for the title, yall ain't either. Outside of NYC, Buffalo has had the most crime in the state consistently than anywhere else... but who cares? Why is that the focal point? Here's why: Because street niggaz all over the counter are really afraid of each other. As tough as everyone sound, that same fear creeps in when they enter a new terrain and unfamiliar territory with like minded ppl. Nobody wants to get run over or made to feel or look like a punk. Period.

I hope yall realize that we got old head rappers out here sounding like kids who are glorifying violence but since they sound a bit more "mature," we can let it go. At the end of the day, a spade is a spade and this ain't no better than hearing it from our youth. Change starts from within but only if you want it to.

Mad props to 'Benny The Butcher' dude for 'makin' it' as a rapper, and all that, but he is incorrect in what he is expressing at the outset of this video. When he states that "nothing good" is happening in Buffalo (NY) "for us", meaning: "black people", he is very actually INCORRECT. Due to industrious and excellent persons, there are indeed MANY historic, wonderful, and advantageous things happening in 'Black Buffalo'- and has been for all of the city's history. There are many activists, athletes, faith leaders, houses of worship, employers, community organizations, foundations, lending institutions, neighborhood groups, students, entrepreneurs, businesses, associations, guilds, military establishment outposts, unions, professionals, journalists, media outlets, newspapers, editors, etc., that always have been, are, and will continue to help make Black Buffalo better than it would be, otherwise. 'Benny', however, does speak for, and toward, a sizeable faction of individuals and households in 'Black Buffalo' who are not a part of the city's (ongoing) genesis and, in fact, its (continuing) renaissance. It is HIS, it is THEIR, fault that he/they fail to acknowledge the revolution's advances. To sit back on one's tush waiting for a savior to rescue one, or anyones else, from a poverty and/or under-education and/or under-employment plight, is a life approach tactic of The Unempowered. No one, not a president, not a governor, not a mayor, not a councilmember, not a legislator, not an alderman, not a senator, not an assemblyman, not a professor, not a researcher, not a journalist, not a physician, and most certainly not a rapper, is going to reverse a (chosen) Path Of Powerlessness. That mindset, worldview, mentality, approach, and outlook is, in truth, a primary and major determinant of individuals' and households' quality-of-life Outcomes. Benny, and anyone else who would complain about the quality-of-life in Buffalo, New York, USA, and any other city in these United States (for that matter), needs to receive the following revelation(s): "The group consisting of mother, father, and child is the main educational agency of mankind" - MLK "One of the most common tendencies of human nature is that of placing responsibility on some external agency for sins we have committed or mistakes we have made. We are forever attempting to find some scapegoat on which we cast responsibility for our actions." - MLK "Ultimately, individual responsibility lies not in the external situation but in the internal response." - MLK "...many examples that could be used to refute the claim that one is completely determined by his environment. Those who hold such a position fail to see that many fine and noble persons stem from bad environments and many very bad and corrupt persons stem from comfortable and desirable environments." - MLK "...Far from saying that environment and heredity have n importance in human personality, what I am really saying is that there is another factor which s the ultimate determining factor - personal responsibility." - MLK "We are not responsible for the environment we are born in, neither are we responsible for our hereditary circumstances. But there is a third factor for which we are responsible namely, the personal response which we make to these circumstances. And so the challenge which confronts all of us is to respond to our circumstances with strength and courage rather than with weakness and despair." - MLK "To get into a schoolhouse and study.....would be the same as getting into paradise." - Booker T. Washington "I have never had patience with [those] always ready to explain why one cannot succeed, I have always had high regard for the man who could tell me how to succeed." - Booker T. Washington "Nothing ever comes to one, that is worth having, except as a result of hard work." - Booker T. Washington "One constructive effort in the way of progress does more to blot out discrimination than all the whinings in the world." - Booker T. Washington "It is what a man or woman is able to do that counts." - Booker T. Washington "No man who continues to add something to the material, intellectual and moral well-being of the place in which he lives is left long without proper reward." - Booker T. Washington "The individual who can do something that the world wants will, in the end, make his way regardless of race." - Booker T. Washington

Upstate NY is like Long Island NY it was always frowned upon by the Five Boros of NYC. But like Buffalo and other parts of Upstate NY L.I. has its hoods just in a suburban setting like Hempstead Roosevelt Bellport Brentwood Amityville Wyndance New Cassel Freeport Terrace Ave Central Islip that have spit out it share of success stories and Gangster's like any Black Hood in America. But like Benny and Conway they went even harder like Long Island MC's did during the Golden Era like Rakim EPMD Public Enemy Freddie Foxx Craig Mack Prodigy from Moob Deep Keith Murray just to name a few because The five Boros frowned upon any other part of NY that's not the five Boros but let's be honest these Upstate NY cats are the hardest in NY and when it came to the Golden Era of Hip Hop Strong Island NY had the game on smash with all the iconic MC's we spit out like Method Man Grand Daddy IU Ashanti JVC Force Soul for Real MF DOOM Ra the Rugged Man Rakim EPMD Dela Soul Freddie Foxx Leaders of the New School Craig Mack Prodigy from Moob Deep Biz Markie Doctor Dre from Yo MTV Raps Prince Paul from Stesasonic Rick Rubin Lil Moe Original Concept and today Roc Marciano.

McCarthy Park n most of east amherst was always poppin off growin up. Mom threatened to off me if she heard I was on Broadway. Saw the madness but avoided it but yeah buffalo is great for the most part. Made a choice years ago to start exploring n personally I've met dope people on Elmwood, Grant, Lackawanna....you just gotta look. Only place I felt like I get stared at is Amherst near the boulevard mall. It has its own garbage like any city, but this is a city with town dna and i love it for that.
