We're going back to basics with how to crochet a simple Granny Square for absolute beginners. The humble granny is a staple for all crocheters, once you've cracked this, you can do anything! In this video I go very slowly and show you not only how to crochet a granny square in a solid colour but also how to change colours for a more traditional look.

Do you have a left handed version of this video? If you are left handed, you can convert ANY video on KZbin yourself! Simply go to www.mirrorthev... and follow the instructions to mirror flip any video to convert to left handed!
How much yarn will I need? This is a very tricky question to answer as there are so many variables! How much yarn you need will depend on which yarn you choose, the thickness of that yarn, your tension and how large you want your finished project to be. I suggest making a small sample first so you can gauge how much yarn you'll need. If making a crochet square, you can weigh your finished square to work out how much yarn it used!
How many squares do I need for a blanket? That all depends on the size of the square you are making and how big you want your finished blanket to be! I always advise making one square first then measuring the size of it. From there you can work out how many squares you will need to get the blanket size you want 😀
Do you have the written pattern? Yes! I have written patterns to accompany my video tutorials on my website here: www.hookedbyro... The written pattern is generally released a week or so after the video tutorial to ensure there are no errors in the video itself and to make amendments in the written version if any are found. All the written patterns are FREE to access on my website

Hi Robin I have been knitting and crocheting since I was a young girl, I'm now 64. For some reason I have always struggled to master the Granny Square even though I have knitted lace stitches no problem. I recently decided to master Granny squares as I have loads of beautiful wool which would be perfect for crochet blankets. My dear, sweet mama passed in October. She was my best friend and I miss her so much. I found an Afghan that she had made. It is in pretty good shape except for two squares. Hi! I realize this video has been out for 3 years, but I just decided to learn how to crochet this month. I used to crochet like this at school - many, many moons ago - but one of my friends would always start me off, so I never learned the proper way to do it until I watched this video. Oh my goodness. I just have to tell you - I was getting so frustrated this afternoon looking at videos that showed granny squares for "absolute beginners." I didn't understand some of the stitches, etc. bc the tutorials went too fast. Yours is the first one I've used where I understood everything and made my very first inner portion of the square successfully. I have to pause to go out, but will be back on later tonight to finish the square completely. I can't thank you enough for your slow, clear instructions!! 😍
