8:55 This could have been TDP or the top of the compression stroke because the piston comes up two times in each cylinder for every 1 RPM, a tip i use is to plug the spark plug hole with your finger and if you feel compression, that's how you know you'll be at TDC when the piston comes all the way up because if it was coming up on the exhaust stroke they wouldn't be any compression.

my SR i had for a bit had the bearing spun the same way. it usually happens because the lack of oil causes friction and lets one of the bearings grab traction, which in turn sends it to the other side. Also his shit was probably already worn from high mileage so it was only a matter of time.

To make sure it’s at tdc on the compression stroke, put piston one at the tdc as u did. Then open the oil cap and make sure the exhaust cam lobe on cylinder one is pointing outward toward the drivers side. This makes sure the valves r closed and ur not 180 degrees off.

I go with the compression feely thing, or if youre working on something without spark plugs or without overhead cams, you can check which rockers are on valve overlap. Cylinders 1 and 4, 2 and 3 are moving pairs. Firing order in a 4 cyl is 1-3-4-2. To check for cylinder 1 TDC on compression, rotate the engine until both valves on cyl 1 are closed and cylinder 4 has both valves slightly open. Wiggle it back and forth and try and get both cyl 4 rockers open an even amount. boom. If you were doing a valve set you would the move onto cyl 3 and rotate until cyl 2 is in overlap, etc.

Off 180 means they were on tdc exhaust stroke not tdc compression stroke. You can avoid that by plugging the open spark plug hole with your finger. Bump the starter and turn it off when you feel pressure. Cool video

You know... When you get an engine close to TDC via the screwdriver method, install a compression gauge hose, without the gauge and valve, while turning it over you will feel air pressure coming out letting you know you're at TDC compression
