HOONING Travis Pastrana's 862bhp Subaru Family Huckster

"Err on the side of aggressive..." This is the Travis Pastrana life motto. Y'see, Travis Pastrana isn't your typical driving instructor. And his 1983 Subaru GL wagon isn't your typical driving instructor's car. The 'Family Huckster' is powered by an 862bhp flat-four boxer engine. It gets active aero, a six-speed sequential box and runs 4 bar of boost. It doesn't come with dual control pedals.
Enter TG's Jethro Bovingdon. Jethro knows a thing or two about skids, but can he pull off a reverse entry drift with the pressure of Travis in the passenger seat? "Just turn left to go right..." Sounds easy, right?

I was fortunate, and lucky enough to accidentally get to sit and watch the Dallas Supercross race right next to Travis Pastrana back in 2001 or 2002. I was already seated when he came in and sit next my gf and me. He was very nice and friendly, I tried not to bother him because I know he just wanted to watch the race like the rest of us. He did speak and signed a couple things for me. Not long after, Jeff Emig walked in and stood next to our row of seats to watch the race for a short bit too. Emig was out with both his arms broken and in cast at the time.

he's right about when he said you don't treat a gymkhana car with mechanical sympathy, it's made for abuse and it loves it. the weak point in a gymkhana car should be the driver. I know that sounds bad, but everything else on it is designed to be stressed beyond normal limits.

I think this car is a good match for Travis. The style is fun for one thing. But his driving/riding style has always been fast but flamboyant. Even outside of racing he was fast. Squeeze a few extra jumps into a freestyle run doesn't hurt.
