This discussion confirmed my impression of university culture. Thankfully, Anna G-B understands the state of affairs in a way the others do not. At least we have one participant who comes out of the incubator sometime. With respect to the Montana farmer, I'm betting he did not expect his son to arrive back at the farm with a thorough indoctrination in gender theory or diversity, equity and inclusion or women's studies. Otherwise, he'd have preferred to have his son read a seed catalog all winter. As for ROI, all of life is about ROI in that we all have only so much time on this planet and deciding how to spend your limited time is an ROI decision about the value of time. Recent enrollment trends suggest that young people are deciding that university curricula do not provide an ROI on their time investment. They finally recognized that universities do not view their students as their most important customers.

The fact a panel has to come together on this topic is distressing. Agree with the point about seeking universities that will actually provide an education, there is absolutely a market for that. My daughter has no interest in applying to the Ivy League and refuses to consider a number of schools over their campus reporting systems. This shouldn't be her selection criteria.

A great point about social media acting essentially as an omnipresent Big Brother. Given that “like” button acts as a high gain positive feedback in all social networks, no wonder that we always fluctuate between the extremes. We can’t put this social Big Brother back, so it’s up to the university researchers to figure out how to neutralize or at least soften its effectimlact, first for the university community and then for the society at large. Otherwise these extreme oscillations will degrade the social fabric of our society with catastrophic consequences
