I had a ‘69 911E that was a sportamatic…. Bought it for $4,500 in 2000 when no one loved old 911’s. Sold it for $4,500 a few years later. The value of that car in its color has it over $175,000 now… just crazy. It was sold and shipped about ten years ago to a collector in Norway.

And while I like old Porsches, a 912 is simply not worth even 40k. Honestly most of the air cooled Porsches aren’t amazing drivers cars. Light and quick cars but with odd driving dynamics.

Been there. In 2000 I bought a 56 Porsche 356a speedster from an older woman who's husband had recently died for $25,000. I sold it that same year to a porsche dealership in Rhode Island for $50,000. I thought I was also a genius. Those cars are selling for an average price of $326,826. Clearly I'm not as smart as I thought I was lol

They also just couldn’t sell them when they were new, for a Toyota it was expensive in todays currency it would be a little under 50 grand for a fully optioned targa top new. People wouldn’t be lining up to be paying that much for a Toyota that wasn’t called Land Cruiser. Especially not when you could’ve bought a 2nd hand 964 Porsche 911 in those times with a couple thousand miles on it for cheaper than a Supra and still have more power stock

Hoovie is spot on with this list. I love, love, love air-cooled 911s but I'm not going to pay the money for one right now. I bought a '99 996 manual coupe for $14k seven years ago and love it. I can replace the engine four times and it will still be cheaper than one 1987 Carrera. I think it all comes down to the gatekeeping that happens in Porsche circles. Certain dudes want to hang with the "cool" crowd and they feel like an air-cooled 911 is the only way in. The truth is that nobody cares about your car more than you do. So just buy what you love and drive it.

I completely agree with you on most of these but especially on the air cooled 911s. They are some of my favorite cars of all time and I've had several including a SC, 964, 993, 930 4 speed, and a 993 Turbo in the early to mid 2000s but now they've gotten stupid expensive. I 😊 have a clean low mileage 996 C4 Cab. I won't say I enjoy the 996 as much as an air cooled one but for the price it's still a great driving experience. As far as what the general person thinks any Porsche is cool. Years ago I was in So Cal in my SC Targa, which I had just picked up from the shop for having a full restoration so it looked great. I saw a 993 Turbo S parked at a bar near the PCH so of course I stopped and was drooling over it. A guy was walking in and stopped to talk to me and said he'd introduce me to the owner but couldn't understand why I was so excited. He said what's the difference between his and my car, they look the same! I get all sorts of compliments on my 996 and even when I have my friend's dad's 986 Boxster people say how nice a car it is and it's a fun car to drive. Kinda slow but fun. That was a crazy long way to say there's no good reason for regular air cooled 911s to be anywhere as much as they are. Even most of the special ones are way too much. The Grand Nationals are way too much too!!!

Bought an 85 3.2 for $15k and sold it for $18k ten years ago. Loved the car but couldn’t imagine paying more than $25k for a nice one. That car would be around $60k today. Glad I had it when I did. People bring them to track days now and they are roadblocks. They need their own class….
@hitchedtohorsepower
@hitchedtohorsepower 8 ай бұрын
@steveo85 completely agree. I truly love them but they are very compromised cars that aren't fast unless you spend a fortune to build a motor. Also to get track performance out of them you have to know how to drive them not just a good track driver in general. They aren't comfortable at all and things like heat and AC are a joke. Like I said still one of my favorite cars but the prices of the last several years are ridiculous.

Sorry, Tyler. The 4 Runner is not more capable than the XJ Cherokee. I am not a Toyota or Jeep guy, but the proof is in the pudding. Out here in the desert southwest, the XJ has shown much more capability and is less expensive to maintain and upgrade. It is KZbin channels like Matt's Off-Road Recovery that have spiked the interest in this very capable vehicle. I had a chance to purchase a 59,000 mile, one-owner, original condition Cherokee Sport for $6900 in Dec. 2022. Someone beat me to the punch (I am 6 hrs away). The car was up for sale 3 weeks later on the same site for $14,000 and sold in a day. OUCH!!! You nailed it, WAY too much money on these often beat down SUVs.

A DeLorean is only not reliable if it wasn't taken care of or if you had a bad mechanic working on it. I owned my DeLorean for almost 6 years and once all the crap was taken care of it drives without any issues for the last few years . The windows are bigger then on your contact in case you forgot. They built abut 9000 of the cars and once the catalytic system is removed it drives great. Remember no cars were fast in the early 80s. This was not because o a bad engine but because of crazy us rules by the government. The same engine was used in the Renault Alpine (without any US regulations for European market) and it had way more horsepower. The DeLorean is a legend unlike so many other cars

I actually agree with Hoovie on a few of these. The DeLorean is an epicly cool vehicle to LOOK AT, but its completely empty on "experience". Supras are getting STUPID expensive. Not even during the onslaught of F&F 1 did the price of Supras explode so much. It's crazy. The thing about Grand Nationals is that they were out accelerating *brand new* muscle cars all the way into the late 2000s. Now GNXs the sky is the limit. Less then 600 produced and even faster.

What I feel like hoovie forgets is the reliability of the Cherokee Xj and landcruiser. Back when the Cherokee was under 5k they were an amazing off-road platform. Toss another 5k in aftermarket on it and you have a rig capable of keeping up with any modern vehicle on trails. People don't want newer heavily complicated vehicles when it comes to off-road stuff. The tride and true vehicles really hold there value there. With the abandonment of that market in the new car market unless you spend 60k+ those older plain vehicles are a great choice

Drove the 355 years ago. My Lotus Exige was a more exotic, more fun, and faster car. Love Ferraris, but the 458 was the first one I would and do own. Totally agree. 355s should still be 60-80k and Dinos 120-140. Stupid prices for not great drivers and not special.

The buick was an everyday junk car that was made by the millions across the g.m. line with a drivetrain that was new a special! The drive train was the only thing special!

Ok, I missed a few episodes: The backdrop looks more vibrant, and April has a cyborg leg now... Cool.

April said it when talking about the DeLorean. The sports/collector cars that bring the stupid money are usually the vehicles that were around 30 to 50 years ago. Those people are now at the age where they have some disposable income, and some are spending it on that car they dreamed of when they were a kid.

GNs are cool and all, but even in 80s they were kind of overpriced. Back in the 80s you could take any of the G-body cars, add a small block chevy along with one of many of the suspension kits offered back then and have a killer car for less what dealers were selling the GNs for.

I remember when a mint Delorean was $25k and a typical one was 15k. I figured I would get one when hit my life settled, but for what they go for now, the nostalgia just isn’t that strong. I bought a ‘69 911E for $4,500 around 2000. Had I known what they would jump to I would have held onto it… face palm. I had an 80 series Land Cruiser for 20 years, great rig but again, stupid money now. The Supra was a car I had in my wall in highschool (next to a poster of a Delorean and the 80 series Land Cruiser) …. I guess I had good taste based on current values and this list? 😆

I know it wasn't listed, but do you guys think Fox Body Mustangs are overpriced? It's one thing if it's a special edition model such as a 1993 SVT Cobra/Cobra R or an original Saleen, but a regular good condition GT selling for $20-$25K?

Tyler..you know you can go to Delorean and order a car basically brand new? April..."I have a savings account! I wanna go buy a car!"....LOL People are hoarding cars now because they're afraid EVs will take over. But I hear the opposite with EVs. Manufacturers are pulling back because they know EVs aren't viable (and a scam). I also have to say these auction houses like Barrett Jackson and Mecum jack up the prices and over inflate them and then regular people think they are worth that much. That ending was funny...

They're both right. GNs are the coolest car ever made...... But, they are a bit over priced. And some advice for Hoovie, the only way out of the dog house now is to give April your GN.

The problem is that anything that is a daily driver or survivor is already wrecked and torn apart for spare parts or restored. It's why you never find reasonable priced old Mustangs from the 60s. Anything that is affordable is long dead and gone and all that are left are the few survivors.
