Is there any chance the owner was buddies with his mechanic and squeezed the insurance company for $10K worth of damages, but then only paid for a minor dent repair/respray and pocketed the rest? :) Or it could have just needed something like glass and rims?

@@dizzy2020 Yes, I have a 2012 Maxima, that I love that about a year after I bought it in 2016 I hit a parked pick up truck on the side of the road. (I was being ignorant, and drove into the sun with a mostly fogged windshield blinding me.) It took out the right front suspension and the passenger side fender and front valence. I hauled to a body and fender man I trusted for a lot of restoration work he had done on my vintage Buicks. By the time he was done with the repair on the Maxima which was covered by insurance, even I couldn't tell where the damage had occurred and I knew where to look. It will probably show up on a Car Fax report if I ever sell the car, but that is a non-issue for me.

OMG this brings back some memories. The paint on the upper surfaces cracked due to bad primer. Check the exhaust manifolds, they all crack. I would highly suggest that you check both the oil supply and return lines for the turbo just to make sure everything is clean and flowing oil. If any of that goes bad it runs metal through both the motor and the turbo. I would also suggest replacing the hoses on the intercooler and intake pipe, those were not very good and had a tendency to blow off easy under boost. I do miss mine. I hope you keep it, so I can continue to enjoy the stroll down memory lane!

That car does NOT have the factory HD 8.5" rear axle and appears to have the standard 7.5" axle. The driveshaft being new and paint marker on the tube tells me it has been swapped. The cast iron fangs on the bottom of the housing instead of square corners are a clear indicator that it has been swapped to the inferior rear axle.

Having had a Regal in the past, the main issue with the front end is that the entire front forward of the hood is fiberglass and plastic aside from the bumper. If you tap something or clip it on something even a little bit, it simply disintegrates and is 100% non-repairable. The entire front piece has to be replaced. It's also flimsy enough that it provides zero impact protection, so a 5 or 10mph oops in a parking lot is the front fenders, radiator, and front end/grille all having to be looked at. Almost every one of these old cars has had the front rebuilt as it's very common to destroy them. One a special model like this, finding the proper front grille... not cheap.
@toddcutsuries54
@toddcutsuries54 Жыл бұрын
I had a 87 T Type and yes, the front clip was fiberglass and the trim below the clip was color matched vinyl. However, the bumpers were pretty solid and could be straightened, but more commonly, the bumper shocks were what failed in light impact collisions. The ease of repairing these front ends was epically easy. If you found parts of the same color you could fix in less than 2hrs time. The rubber strip on bumper was probably the most annoying cause it didn’t take much to mar that thing up. $35 at the dealership (in 1987 that is). This vehicle was an awesome find.

if I'm not mistaken, your 'stang had 225 hp right? There was lots you could do to it to up that number (polishing the intake plenum was popular) but off the rip not a lot compared to the grand nash. A co-worker had a pic of his doing a wheelie at the drag strip.

@@muskokamike127 Yep. Power adders and aftermarket heads were just coming on line back then. Eventually 5.0 world figured out that above 500 HP the stock 302 blocks would sort of split in two. IDK. Back then I was doing good to make car and insurance payments at age 21, I needed that car to stay trouble free. Besides, I had just put my 429 police engine swapped 1972 Mach 1 together, I wanted to save the mods for it. Hoovie, the reason you have a aftermarket drive shift is because the rear in the car is not the factory rear. The rear in your car looks to be a 7.5 from a Monte Carlo or a cutlass. Where is the grand nationals should have an 8.5 inch rear. The smaller rear requires a longer drive shaft. I’m a Buick youtuber, I would know.

I think you and the one other guy that caught this just figured out where the car got hit - the rear. Must have pretzeled the diff. Talking about all the different leaks on the Cadillac, young people have never seen it but parking lots used to be covered with leaked out oil. Every car over 5 years old had leaks and everybody's parking spot had an oil slick on it. Now days cars dont live long enough to get that dirty. So many fewer roads were paved so you pick up dust from the road surface that would stick to the oil on the engine and cake up 4 inches thick. Nobody had a pressure washer and it was a nasty mess to have to do anything to an old, beat up car, especially when you are laying on your back on an unpaved parking spot to do it. I sure dont miss that part of the good ole days.

I suspect if you look very closely, you will find out that the car got "front clipped". The front of the car (including the frame rails) is in much better shape than the rest. I think if you check, the "clean" is going to stop right around the subframe connectors. They likely bolted back on the original suspension and all to save a bit, but the parts are about 2k and about 8 to 10 hours work, plus body panels and paint, and you can make it to 10k without effort.

The engine being mounted "pretty far back being a V-6" is because the engine bay on the base Regal frame was designed to accommodate both the 231 / 3.8l engine, as well as the 307 / 5.0l V-8 engine.

I would have the undercarriage dry ice blasted and have it sprayed with cosmoline it’ll look like brand new, paint correction and ceramic coating. But then I’d be afraid to drive it haha. Great purchase Hoovie!

All this interest in GN's now. Mine had leather interior and digital dash with a moonroof, not t-tops. Sold it 25 years ago. I know of a person with a GNX who bought new. Smart enough to know what it would be worth.

This may sound weird but I think I actually know this car. I believe it may have traded a few hands over the time that I've seen it though when I first saw it was in Grand Prairie, Alberta, Canada and looking at that drive shaft. The shop that did it was in Edmonton Alberta

Didn't GM do something to the engine to limit it for the 1987 model year? I kind of remember something about it having to do with people blowing up motors so GM limited it. Also didn't they put that beefier rear suspension frame thingy in the '87, for planting the power down? I think it was to stop wheel hop or something. I was a teen back then so I just remember drooling every time I saw one.

They got the 8.5" 10 bolt rear, with a G80 posi as a $100 option. GNX got a torque arm style rear suspension vs a 4 link. No mechanical changes from 86-87 they just changed the HP rating, but the ecm chip does limit the car to 120ish mph.

@@mindblownwatcher8536 Nope, they got the GM USA built 8.5 inch rear. Only the Hurst Ols/ 442 were the other cars with 8.5 inch rear. Monte Carlo SS got them 7.5 or 7&5/8 rear.

I live in Hutchinson! I am also an auto enthusiast. I had my share. Unfortunately I have no car now. On SSDI Veteran and Previous Explosives Expert in The underground mine here for 17 years. All kinda got to me. My favorite car I have had. A 1972 cuda 340 with ralleye dash. Rebuilt to 1970's specs, but with aluminum intake and holley 750 double pumper, 3.23 posi, 727 torqueflight. Yes it would move. Yes even with a 3.23 it would roast the 50's I had on it. I also has a 2004 dodge ram rumblebee I loved. Hemi, 3.91 auburn posi, automatic, that huge ram air hemi air intake, and programmer, 20" wheels. on a dot scale it only weighed 5000 lbs. and yes it would roast them even with the posi about half a block and go sideways when it hit second with an automatic.

Bring it to the Buick GS Nationals in Bowling Green, KY coming up in two weeks May 17th - 20th. Car looks pretty stock and FYI that digital boost gauge is notorious for being inaccurate. First mods should be an aux boost gauge and scanmaster to monitor the ECU including knock retard. FYI, that rear end is incorrect for the car (7.5" vs 8.5") and that's why it has an aftermarket driveshaft. Don't add any power mods until you put the correct 8.5" 10 bolt back in.

You should change the powermaster master cylinder, it is liable to kill you and unlike other braking systems has verry low pressure when the booster fails, feels like basically no brakes. Ask me how I know haha
