I was crazy about a '58 Plymouth, but I live in Catalonia (Spain) and those were never sold here... So once I got my first job, I started working hard, saving money, and while all my friends were buying new Volkswagens, Bmw's, etc... I bought and shipped from the USA a '58 which had been abbandoned out in a tungstene mine near Bichop CA. since '73 if I remember it right, it was back in 2016, the sun had completely burnt its paint and interiors, engine, transmission, brakes... It was all dead... I fully restored it during 6 tough years, as there are no parts for it here either, and it cost me a fortune once it was finished. Now it is a joy to drive... Happy you've decided to go for one, they're reliable and usable clars, smooth and fast enough to be comfortable on the road, plus if you like its style.

Press the gas pedal to the floor slowly twice to set the automatic choke. Then, just turn the key and the car should start and come to a fast idle, do not push the gas pedal. After the engine warms up, tap the gas pedal to get the choke to release and it should come to a normal idle speed. All this "if" the carburetor is working as it should.

Some will start while warm and others will require you to hold the throttle quarter to half way while turning the key once warm as stated in the manual but all of mine just start when warm with no throttle input needed. When my classics are being cold started, i slowly depress the gas pedal to set choke, start the car and wait 20-30seconds before I blimp the throttle to turn the choke off. You’ll know if it’s not warm enough because the choke won’t turn off when you blimp the throttle

You'd be surprised at how much attention car engineers paid to interior airflow back then, and even way before. They were coming up with innovative ways to keep the interior airflow fresh and as comfortable as possible going back to the 1930s. They knew it would get hot inside cars on hot days and without air conditioning technology there was a lot of attention and engineering put into getting as much airflow into the cabin as possible. That's why you may hear a lot of old timers tell you "we didn't have A/C in cars back then but we didn't need it"...... they might be trying to sound "tough" but in reality they were no tougher than we are today - it's just that cars today do not have anywhere near the great natural airflow that cars were designed with back then, because they frankly don't need to focus on that anymore with air conditioning.

@@Engineering_Improvisation Yep. Old cars had extra vent levers to bring air in from the wheel wells, the cowl below the windshield, and extra vents out the back to help air flow through the car. The flip side to that is that it's now a lot warmer overall than it was back in their day. And no amount of airflow can overcome triple-digit temperatures, which are becoming more and more common as the years go on. AC wasn't strictly necessary back then, but it is NOW.

He said he turned off the instrument cluster lights and floored it. After several seconds, he asked my Mamaw how fast she thought he was going, and she said "Slow down! You've gotta be doing at least 90!" He said he turned the cluster lights back on, and told her "No, more like 110!" Of course, every time he told the story over the years, the speed he claims he was going kept rising. Before he passed away, I remember him telling someone that he was doing 130. 🤣 I never got to see that car (he sold it LONG before I was even born), but I can imagine him and my Mamaw cruising around in it throughout the 50-60s. Three cool things i noticed. 1. The curb whiskers. Really great way to know how close you are to the curbs. 2. The rear view mirror on the dash. How do you like that? 3. The fins. They remind me of a 57 Chevy. Overall though this car shows well. I can tell the previous owner really put love into restoring it.

Hoovie, it's nice to see you back where I've always felt you should be. I've been watching you since the very early days when you'd purchase cars that the average Jane and Joe could afford. The super expensive super cars with their super expensive repairs is honestly getting really, really old to watch. Many of us can't relate, but I'm sure huge quantities of your viewers do still enjoy those. Please continue to make affordable car purchases and repairs so the rest of us can feel more involved, interested, and can relate. Love the old Hoovie. Best...

My favorite movie of all time was Christine. I actually think this purchase and your Hellcat purchase both make sense unlike almost all the other cars you have purchased over the years. Can't wait for Wizard's reaction to this one. BTW you must have dual exhaust glass packs to get that proper Christine V-8 rumble.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. In 1959 my father bought a 4 door Savoy same color combo. Straight 6 and got about the same mileage as you. Always remember the extra cost options. Two tone paint, sun visor on the passenger side and rear arm rests. I learned to drive on it no power steering, what a tank. I'm glad they don't make them like they used to.

I recently attended the funeral for my automotive inspiration - my uncle Dick. In the reel of photos, I saw a 20 year old Dick standing behind his 1957 Fury -- one of the original cream and gold ones. That was a very happy man. One of his buddies told me that while Dick was in the army, any time he went home for the weekend -- from Fort Dix, New Jersey to Brooklyn -- the line formed to the left to get rides home, because Dick and his Fury always got home faster than any other mode of transportation. Thanks for sharing this, and giving me just a little taste of one of his favorite things.

Tyler. This brings back a Lot of memories for me. Also a Christine fan, book and film. Picked up a 58 Belvedere when I was 14, in NC, and restormodder it for the next 6 years. Daughter, wife, and I did a second refresh on it in 2018, before she and her husband had us drive them to the reception in it. Bounces back and forth between us and them every so often. Doctor she works for us a classic car girl, and her husband's boss is also a fan of the film. We like it because the trunk has room even with my wheelchair in it. A couple summer traffic heat tricks. Switch to a 160 degree thermostat, add a clutch fan, and a shroud to the radiator. Helps keep the engine cooler, and will also make a Classic Air system work more efficiently. Alternate cooling idea, look for the window mount air vent systems for the auto industry Before AC came along. Works like a swamp cooler. Air comes in the front, spins a turbine, cycling a pump, that pushes cold water through a small radiator. Air passes through the rad, and takes a 90 degree turn into a vent, circulating through the car, cooling it down. Would make a conversation starter at shows. Use ours with the 58 and her Bonneville wagon often as both are non AC cars. Not a bad deal, bro. Can't wait to see the Wizard's take on it.
