a little bit of special effects in the dogfight-the close up of the fighters but yes just actors and script they reserve the effects to make a scene work-they need the dogfight to show... -how silly the boy is in thinking movies are better than reality -that aerial battles are confusing to onlookers -show the joy of the onlookers that the brit pilot was victorious -the scariness of encountering an actual German but who is now harmless -the flirting of the sister to show that she is a bit of a bimbo-nympho -and that women value the silk which is hard to come by because it goes into parachutes so yes they needed the effect there but the prime focus is the actors and story the effect is used to move the story not to dominate the scene cursed be lucas and his star wars-from then on effects dominated the story this is such an underrated absolutely beautiful film

I saw this movie when it was released. This is one of my favourite movies and loved it from the first minute. I knew some of the people who participated in this great challenge. As a Canadian I had 11 uncles who served, who brought back war brides, and had friends whose parents were bombed out successive times, hid under tables and ran to flimsy bomb shelters in the garden, and talked to people who listened to the nighttime bombing of Exeter and watched the burning city glowing in the sky. All the people I knew who had these memories are gone now so it’s with a current of sadness that I watch the scenes that recollect their experiences and sacrifices.

Thanks for the chance to enjoy this film once more-- Boorman's childhood-vision of England in the Second World War: personal and beautifully related. My deceased partner of 27 years had been born in Munich, was a young child-of-war from the other side, and I had been impressed hearing his stories, a war seen through his memories. Always, I'd been touched by the personal strength it had taken for ordinary families to make it through in times of great conflict. That's one thing that all sides in a war have in common: mothers and fathers, children and communities to protect. True heroes.

In the 2000s my sister and I went back to London and visited our family’s old house on Ravensbourne Road. She said none of the houses had changed since then, and then she pointed out an empty lot between two of the houses across the street. She said that’s where a house had taken a direct hit in an air raid, and the family’s little girl was killed in the blast. They never rebuilt the house. That empty lot was still so eloquent, after all those decades.

"The Lord God" has a pretty poor record of protecting anyone from anything. (And no, I don't put my life in the non-existent hands of an entity who died two millennia ago.) When the Greek philosopher Epicurus was asked why God permits evil, he responded, "If God is willing but not able [to prevent evil], he is not omnipotent. If he is able but not willing, he is malevolent. If he is both willing and able, why is there evil? And if he is neither willing nor able, why call him 'God'?"
