Hope rotors for road bikes. Nobody seems to be talking about them. So I thought I would.
After 1000 miles of use, I take a look at the Hope Road Rotors.

Nice video! I’ve been using Hope rotors on my road bike since June last year without any issues. After a long steep decent I heard them ticking as they cooled, like a car does sometimes, but they didn’t warp or rub. I’m very happy with them. I was already aware of the benefits from a floating brake rotor from the car world, and the fact they came in purple was an instant buy for me.

I replaced my 160mm Shimano center-lock's on my gravel bike with Hope, first and foremost, for the BLING factor! (Red spider to match my red frame) Crazy expensive here in the US at approx $100 US EACH including the matching lock ring. But they look freekin' awesome so it was worth the money to me. I have noticed I have to true my Hope rotors much less than my Shimanos. I hate any pad rubbing at all and it seemed like I was tweaking my Shimanos all the time. With the Hope it's rare which is an added benefit to the bling!

Agreed they're an amazing bit of kit, and it's just fit and forget! I love the way they make a clicking noise after coming down long descents as the rotors cool and shrink back to a normal size. Yeah, agreed, the cost of manufacturing by hand and the cost of shipping them out of the UK makes the price very high. In the UK, they're £42, which is roughly $53USD

Two more points. 1. Shimano rotors use a steel/aluminium sandwich technology, which is lighter and more delicate, so they are more prone to going out of true if you knock them, whereas Hope/Sram etc. use laser-cut steel which is more robust and heavier. Many times a rubbing rotor is due to a physical knock rather than thermal expansion issues. 2. Not all rotors are the same thickness. Thicker = better braking and more weight. Hence why e-bikes/mtbs use thicker rotors and roadies are on weenie thin ones.

The actual reasoning why 180-220mm rotors arent used on road bike is primarily because it doesnt fit onto the hubs the size is also extremely large so balance point from left to left and thats mainly why roads have 140mm instead while ye bigger rotors mean stopping power and heat absorbent they couldnt fit 180mm rotors to the wheel so ye js another fact

Im using these, they work very well. I do wish they did a 180mm disk in centre lock so i could use Peak Torque adapters and get slightly more heat dissipation when loaded. Much prefer them to Shimano which I find don't last very well and really don't like salty roads.

@@kuchenzwiebel7147 I blooming well can, I'd either not spotted that hope do a 180mm center lock, or it's relatively new. That's quite exciting, I didn't want to change brands because the hope ones are pretty!

I've just bought myself a 2024 Canyon Aeroad and the first thing I've changed is the Wheelset and the Rotors. Been using Hope Rotors and brakes on my MTB for a few years now and love them, never ever had an issue..

Anyone know if these work with Sram Red calipers? Last time I tried Hope rotors was on my mountain bike with Sram Code calipers and the rivets on the rotors conflicted with the calipr body.

Just bought a pair of (road) wheels for a gravel bike (soon to be all purpose bike) - the Hope Floating rotors came on these wheels, and upon first setting up the intermediate bolts hit the brake pads (on a TRP Spyre post mount brake). The rotors are the same size as the TRP ones I already have on the existing set of wheels - anyone else experienced this? From what I see these Hope rotors are rather pricey in comparison to the TRPs, so surely there's something not quite right in terms of setup, rather than just being a design flaw....?

Hi Jon, Thanks a lot for making this helpful video! I am looking for a new disc rotor and looked at the other discs Hope makes. There is also a "Heavy Duty" disc from Hope, this one is 2.3mm thick. I would think that this thicker rotor would absorb more heat than the "standard" version. But it's a non floating construction. Do you also have experience with this thicker rotor? I'm riding a heavier Rohloff touring bike (20kg), and my own weight is 95 kg. So during long descents in the alps heat could be an issue. What are you're thoughts on that? Hi Toon, Sorry for the delay in responding. I don’t have experience with that specific disc, but I have used other brands that come in a little thicker. The most important advice I would give is to consider if there is room to accommodate a thicker rotor, it may rub. Also, you’re correct, the thicker rotor is less likely to warp. The team at Hope is very responsive, it may be worth dropping them an email and asking the question. My opinion, the floating rotor would probably be fine, but the thicker rotor may be more efficient and last longer…… if it’ll fit. Thanks, Jon 👍

I just ordered 4 rotors for my CheckPoint as I have two wheelsets and them in Orange to continue my little orange bling factor I have going on my bike. Unfortunately they are on backorder, but should be in the first week or so of August. Looking forward to getting them installed.

I am using them since 2016… they are great BUT with sram rival and sram force - they seem not work very well, they are quite loud and do not perform like with shimano… anyone had the same issue ?

Maybe they are good, or better, but more expensive in the UK, then in EU. In Germany they cost 54 Euro, UK 60-80 Sterlings for ONE! For these I by the PAIR layered Campagnolo disc rotors made by Magura (1.85mm thick). Don't suport the rip off!

You make some good point @MrSzwarz, but I'm not sure the Hope product is a 'Rip-off'. Cost - In the real world, the difference is £10 per rotor. The Hope product is hand made in the UK, therefore manufacturing costs are at a premium. Shipping from the UK into the EU also increases the retail cost. Not a lot Hope can do about that, so not sure they're ripping people off. Thickness - Not always better. Hope manufactures to 1.80mm thick, so that the rotor can also be used with earlier calipers that offer less disc clearance. I do however agree with you, both the Magura and Campagnolo/Magura products are very good. Whether on not one is better than the other, who actually knows?

Hello and thks for your interesting video.....allow me please a few questions-Do these Hope rotors "pair" with Magura M7 brake system ?? In your video the Hope rotor you show has an even rim (my preference) Most Hope rotors models I see for sale do not have that even smooth rim but, "jagged".......I am looking for an alternative for my Magura M7 rotors as I have done almost everything to solve the noise under braking and I am considering Hope rotors in case they pair with Magura M7 system.

Hi, There is no reason why not. However, the Magura MT7 is a MTB system, and the Hope Road 6 Bolt Rotor or Road CL is intended for road use. Thats not to say you couldn’t use the 6-bolt road variant, but you would be limited to 160mm rotors. If your intended use is MTB, then you may want to explore the Hope Standard & Floating rotors (link below), as these still give you the floating technology, but are offered in 140mm to 225mm. However, you will lose the machined rounded edge that this rotor offers, as you say, Hope MTB rotors are “Jagged”. Also, it’s worth noting that most noise during braking is caused by the pads, rather than the disc. Noise caused through the disc is usually caused by contamination. The MTB world tends to opt for a sintered brake pad, these are notoriously noisy, especially in the wet. Opting for a resin pad can resolve this problem. I hope this helps. I know that Shimano offer a disc mounted speed sensor, it’s used by some TT riders, because they can’t access the hub on a solid wheel to mount the normal type. However, I don’t know if you can fix one to any other make of rotor. It may be worth contacting Hope and asking them.

Love them too, James. They look super cool, and they hardly ever rub. If I go down a big descent, they make a clicking noise at the bottom where they shrink back into shape. I'm running the 6 bolt version, which on their own are lighter (109g) than the centre lock Shimano's (115g) they replaced. Trouble is, when you include the 6 bolt to centre lock adaptor, it comes in heavier (140g). The best discs though 👍

Hi @@DanImal-eo5mo, I would always recommend speaking to your wheel/hub manufacturer in the first instance. In this install, I used the HUNT adaptors/shims that were supplied with the wheels. However, in the past, I've also used adaptors from Superstar Components, but I'm not sure if they're holding stock - www.superstarcomponents.com/en/centrelock-adaptor.htm It's also worth noting that Hope make a centrelock version of this rotor too. Hi, In the dry, I get no noise at all. In the wet, I do get a little when first braking. However, I put this down to the fact that I’m running ceramic sintered brake pads.

@@ribblevalleycyclist His vids were not about Hope rotors. In the comments section of one of his videos I asked him about the Hope rotors and he replied. I figured in his line of work he would have some opinion based on his exposure. Hope is not so common here in the US. I have used Hope Pro4 hubs in the past for mountain biking and really like the hubs. Based on what you claim about the rotors in your video I would like to try them but they are not so easy to get where I live.
