Hope for Hemlocks

Groves of giant hemlocks were once abundant in Shenandoah National Park, providing cool microclimates in the heat of the summer. An invasive aphid, the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid has decimated these majestic trees. Is there new hope for hemlocks in Shenandoah? Learn about how the Park has worked to stem the tide of destruction, including the recent introduction of a predatory beetle which feeds on the adelgid.

I miss the hemlocks on the Cedar run and White Oak canyon trails on my hikes. In the early 1970s until mid 1980s when I used to hike these trails weekly they were beautiful!! Now I get out to run the trails of the park daily now that I am retired.

As a child my parents and I used to hike the Limberlost during our annual camping trips to Shenandoah in the 70s. The hemlock were majestic.
