Hope is the gritty-scarred veteran behind enemy lines with a broken arm held together with sticks, a leg that does not quite want to do its job anymore and only armed with a slightly chipped army knife saying "We might die one day, but I will do my best to make that day not be today"

This reminds me of a concept taught to me through a story I read. You can trust someone without trusting IN someone. You can always trust someone to act a certain way, but you wouldn’t trust in them to help you. I.E. the villain trusts that the hero will always try to stop him.

You see all those negative philosophers and their followers? All them who fell on the belief that there's nothing but pain and suffering in life until you drop? They didn't learn how to weaponize hope, they lost it on the first sign of conflict and made themselves up to be superior in belief for being unarmed and accepting death. Reject negativity, embrace Hope
@SeltzerFountain8 күн бұрын
in their absense of anything to hold onto, their only defense is to try and drag everyone they can down with them I pity them in a sense, but the pity does not make their actions any less wrong
@mogim8158 күн бұрын
I mean, they do get one half of the equation right. You can both wield hope and accept death, in fact accepting death makes it easier to wield hope. The wounded soldier who charges into the battlefield for one last hurrah not only wields hope, but has produced that hope from their own acceptance of death. Living in fear of death makes inaction easier, which makes it harder to feel control in tough situations, which then makes it harder to hope. If you do it right, nihilism can be like the hood on top of your hope engine, keeping misery from getting in and gunking up your hope.
@SeltzerFountain8 күн бұрын
@@mogim815 I see your point, but I mostly dislike how so many people blur the line between "accepting death" and "agonizing over it" and I feel a lot of these so called philosophers lean a lot more to the ladder, while acting like thye believe in the former. That's from how I've seen them at the very least
@moonblaze27135 күн бұрын
@@SeltzerFountainAs someone whos done of philosophy reading out of passion, i would say an empahtic yes. But actually no. Youre pointing at the philosophers, and i dont think they themselves are the problem. Its not directly relevant but, Nietzsche is famous for his "God is dead and we whave killed him" quote, but hes not an athiest crying triumph over the church. He follows that up by lamenting the loss, and wondering what we do now with this blood o our hands. Whether you agree with him or not, you can't fairly argue he is happy about what he's describing. And yet, a lot of people think exactly that. Its not the philosophers who have the attitude you're describing, but whats filtered down into the collective consiousness. People in despair take hold of the quotes of the philosophers that connect with them, but they rarely take it further to to actually understand what they were saying.

There's a quote that's stuck with me. Basically, if you understand how something works, you can change it. If you feel hopeless, you don't have sufficient understanding of your circumstances. She's an injured bird, Finally taking flight. And she'll be the last one standing, Ready to fight, For her hope. And as that bird of legends, Sharpened her beak on that mountain, Through years with no end, Oh what was it in her mind? Hope. And when Pandora open that box, And out went every monster, And even bad thing in the world, What was it that remained? Hope. And she's longing for a home, Already lost to time, And she is unrequited love, But maybe one day, the bird shall return? Hope.

We wonder if there's.... something missing here about why people lose hope. Hope can be painful, when the trust in the good of humanity is lost, when the betrayal of that there is good in the world is committed. And that painfulness of hoping is what makes it so easy to drop that hope, lose that hope, make hope not worth fighting for. The thing that's difficult, that makes the whole argument so circular and difficult, is losing hope is losing the will to fight for hope, to train hope. You need to have hope that hope is worth hoping for in order to fight for hope at all.

So super relevant! At time of posting, sure (I'm not even on the North American continent and recent events have me worried), but relevant in a more evergreen sense as well. There is always going to be tough times, times where despair and depression are rife in the world. Almost everyone has a run in with the Dark Woods (my term for certainvarietiesof self harming thoughts), many get lost in them, and some never find a way out. Hope is important, as it is a light and guide through such places. If we give up, if we give in, if we stop fighting, nothing ever gets better.
And look at Tumblr, it's currently in financial trouble and has been a total waste of money for Yahoo and Verizon both. Which is why they sold it off to WordPress, which NO ONE FUCKING USES! Looks like the Nihilists win by default AGAIN!
