I test out Federal's Trophy Bonded Tip bullet in my 30-06 with Big Game Powder. These came from the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw and are also similar to the Terminal Ascent bullet.

Nice, like you said - it all just works. The 180 TBT has a BC of .500 with a 1600fps min velocity vs the 175 Terminal Ascent with a BC of .520 and min velocity of 1400fps. The TBT is a great bullet and less expensive.

Few dare to shoot up the tail. But if you know and thrust the bullet it'll do the job. I never hestitated to do it with a 30-30. 170 grns at slow speed would do the same as yours. no over expantion.👍

Have taken 2 Caribou, 4 moose with 180 trophy bonded bear claws. 300 WBY at 3150fps. Longest shot was a moose at 220y. Closest was Caribou at 10y. Have recovered a few bullets under the hide. They get pretty wide when expanded. Great hunting bullet.

To your question on pressure. You said you had some throat erosion. That would account for a lower pressure spike. The pressure usually spikes right as the bullet hits the lands which usually occurs while the tail of the bullet is still in the case. The further the bullet has to move before it hits the lands the more room there is in the case at max pressure. Which will reduce max pressure. It's basically like your shooting a longer case with the same load data. Like using 30-06 load data in a 30-06 AI. That's my two cents. 😅

I'm presently working up 30-06 150's with Accubond, Scirocco, and TTSX. Haven't found a powder yet that works anywhere near as well as RL17. Getting 2950 @57G with absolutely no signs of pressure. You make a good point about the pressure signs. Think I still have room but why? It's plenty fast enough, just want to finish some seating depth tests. I've heard the negativity on the temperature stability. It was darn near 60 hete today up north and thats way warmer than hunting season. So if you can find some 17, try it.

Those are my favorites too. Waiting to work up a load in 7mm-08 with StaBall 6.5 and 160 grainers. I"m worried about the length of these bullets. They go down a lot in the case. I love your idea of loading one at different charges to see if pressure is OK. That's what I plan to do. Like you I don't have published loads for this combo so I'm looking at starting charges with Barnes bullets and 175 lead core bullets and go from there.

Regarding pressure, it depends on how it's chambered as well as barrel quality. Example, My first 30-06 build had a button rifled PacNor barrel but was chambered with a match reamer specifically for my batch of Lapua brass. (By the way, it's pronounced LA pwAh). Most mericans say luh-poo-wuh. Anyway, I reached pressure signs at or just before most published data loading guides, which, in 34 years of loading, was very unusual. In almost all cases and by now, likely over 55 rifles (including original factory configurations later converted to builds with my chosen components), I'm able to go over, and sometimes way over, what a published guide has as their tested max load. That 30-06 now wears a Brux barrel. With the PacNor barrel I had an excellent load with 168 Barnes TTSX over Reloder 19. That ammo shoots ok in the new barrel, about 3/4" and about the same and up to one inch in 3 factory Tikka T3x Hunters. I have yet to clock these loads in any of the four 30-06 rifles I currently own but plan to.

Many rifles in 30-06 have a very long throat, especially older ones. That, along with generally very conservative loading data can make reaching max pressure in the '06 difficult. If you look at Vihtavuori's website and examine the load data for the 30-06 using N560 you will find some very impressive velocities, especially 180 grain bullets - give or take 10 grains. Those velocities are spot on for a 24 inch barrel according to my Labradar, but the best part is how accurate those loads are with N560. These are definitely max pressure loads, so don't exceed them. These are the highest velocity loads I have used in 30-06 AND among the most accurate. N560 is #1 in my 30i-06.
@8MM.PRC.HUNTER
@8MM.PRC.HUNTER 6 ай бұрын
2850 fps is easily achieved with 180 grain bullets, along with excellent accuracy. Not sure how lighter bullets would work with N560, as I always use 180's or heavier.

🤷‍♂️ Your Observations Are Correct, But Where Should I Begin? Both the Americans and Germans Spent Alot of Time and Money Testing Military Cartridge Designs! The 30-06 is Not Overbore (Has a Long Barrel Life - Upwards of 5,000 Shots, If You Care For Your Rifle, and 3,500 Shots If You Don't), Has a "Balanced" Case Powder Capacity to Case Hole Exit Diameter and Dimensions That Allows It To Work Well With A Variety of Powders, Feeds Flawlessly, Allows Great Performance While Maximizing Magazine Capacity, Tolerable Recoil For The Average Shooter, and Has More For Caliber Bullet Options Than Any Other Caliber, etc...Simply Put, They Didn't Need To Change Anything Between The 1st and 2nd World Wars, Because It Worked! And, Mabey They Still Don't! 😜

My son was calling my shots, took three shots behind the right front shoulder. Upon inspection, the first two shots exploded under the skin on top of the rib cage, third shot did penetrate into the chest cavity and exploded, no exit wound.
