In 1970 a 10 year old boy walked into the kitchen when his father said “come in here boy, I want to show you something” and as I rounded the corner, my father handed me a sporterized 30-06 1917 Enfield with a 3X (El Paso) Weaver scope on it. I was very excited to say the least. I could barely hold the thing up… but that did not matter. 7 days later, I took my first deer… a fork horn black tail buck and that started it all. I gave that rifle to my youngest grandson who will be one year old this 9-11-24… it will wait on him and my father kept the same $6.12 box of Sierra 168 grain bullets he taught me how to load for my first deer… inside the box… a note… “Raymond’s first deer” and 16 remaining unloaded bullets. So I loaded them and placed the note from my father inside for my grandson. The 30-06 will and always be a round that will never let you down if you do your part. I am a gunsmith and have built “God know how many” different chambering over the years and when a new shooter asks me “what caliber I recommend?” 30-06 rolls out “like water off a ducks back”. You can buy ammo ANYPLACE (for now) and “it kills bugs dead”. I do shoot long range, but… that is not real hunting… getting close enough to see the moisture on the nose of your quarry is hunting… thank you for your video sir.

I might know a little about the 30-06😳 I have been a 60+ year gun collector, reloader and hunter. At my last check I have bought it owned over 2,400 rifles in about every brand and cartridge! I have 8 guns in for custom work at my gunsmith right now! Of all the cartridges I have owned and reloaded for and hunted with the 30-06 makes the most sense for most hunters for hunting and it shoots the widest range of bullet weights too! I have 3 cartridges I do most of all my hunting with and the 30-06 is one of the 3 cartridges🙌

I've used -06 on several Africa, NZ, Argentina, and large game hunts here in US...rarely, very rarely have I had to go above 1 shot to dispatch the game. My 2023 trip to Africa I hunted 12 species from Eland on down to Spring buck..and all 12 animals including the golden Wildebeast took 1rnd of 175grn Barnes LRX. The Sable I took was at 702yds, 1shot he didn't run 30ft. ..I reload and practice extensively with my -06 rifles and loads..they have never let me down..and because of this my friends also have purchased and use the -06 even though these new man bun carts are being marketed...great video

If I had to choose only one caliber to use for the rest of my life for all big game hunting it would absolutely be the 30-06. But that would only be with my hand loaded ammo. I have been able to safely achieve up to 200 fps above standard factory ballistics and you are absolutely right stating that 65000 psi is safe in the '06. And if I were using only the 30-06, it would have a custom barrel with cut rifling from one of the better barrel makers and it would be 25 or even 26 inches long and in a little heavier contour such as that normally used in a magnum caliber. Such a gun would be more accurate, and have a little less recoil, than that of a standard factory barreled gun. But even a factory barreled '06 is extremely capable. The 30-06 really is the best balance of power and manageable recoil for a hunting cartridge. Plus it gives you more ammo capacity vs a magnum round, is widely available, and is very flexible and versatile. And barrel life is much better than that of any magnum 30.

71+ year old FUD here. I was laughing all the way through that guy’s Hornady testimonial. The worst was his absolute lack of knowledge about the 6.5x55. Even Ryan on the Vortex Nation pod cast stated same as what I say is that the hand loaded 6.5x55 will leave the 6.5 Creedmoor in the dust. It can be done safely with the Carl Gustaf M94/96/38 actions or the Husqvarna actions. Both are plenty strong. With those long actions you can seat the bullets farther out to take full advantage of the Swede’s larger case capacity. Also the twist rate on those rifles can handle those longer, heavier, high BC bullets. Depending on which model and barrel length the twist rates were between 7.5 and 8.5/1. I’ve stated before when other so-called influencers posting from their mother’s basement asserted that the 30-06 was no longer relevant, that the notion was purely ludicrous. It is still ludicrous. I don’t currently own a 30-06 but I do own a 300 H&H that I can load up or down with the appropriate bullet depending on my needs. If you happen to go to Africa and need ammunition you’re still going to find 300 H&H, 300 Win Mag, 30-06, 308 Winchester, 7x57 and even 6.5x55 in stock at gun stores. If you ask about PRC anything they’re going to say whaaat?! Happy hunting boys and girls!😊

We have a problem in our younger generation of hunters about ethical Hunting Distance . I do Live in West and playing Snicker team 6 on Animals is just flat out Wrong. 2 yr ago, guiding out fitting services where talking about having to tell people what caliber is expected to hunt with. The 6.5 Creedmore shoots paper great but lacks on large Animals . The Guides spent more time tracking wounded Animals than anything else. The 300PRC is a great long-range rifle, and yes, the 250 grain bullet bucks the wind but will absolutely Crush the Chest of a Elk it is way too much of a bullet. You should be hunting for the enjoyment of the stalk and the Meat not Hunting for horns. Personally I really think the whole "ethical hunting" discussion is extremely charged on both sides, the old-heads toward caution (maybe from old days where ammo wasn't as consistent) and a lot of the newer guys think they're Chris Kyle and trying to headshot deer at 1000 yards. If you're serious about hunting, and especially longer range hunting, you will be at least a part time target shooter; enough so you can get consistent accuracy, cold-bore or not. In that vein, if you are practiced with your rifle and load enough that you can land your shot within 2-3" of intended aim (generally within your kill zone) every time, then I don't think there IS a limit for ethical hunting aside from energy and speed for reliable expansion. The part of that equation the younger folks are missing is the ego check to let that shot go and get closer or look for another one.

@zacharyharwell351 I agree with you. I did not mention the young guy from Denver with the 300PRC he was a great shot with his custom-built gun. We were talking at the Range, and it was him who told me how he had used a 250gr bullet and how he was shocked at the Damage on his Elk. He said it totally crushed the chest of the Elk. I was watching him shoot with ease 1300 yrds out to 1550 yrds. I forgot at what distance he said he shot at on his Elk.

Certain cartridges and certain rifles go together like peas and carrots. I’m a 300WSM and 270WIN guy so I technically have no need for a 30-06… however, If I were to get a Winchester model 70, I would feel compelled to get it chambered in 30-06… or 270WIN for that matter, especially if it has a sweet maple stock. A Winchester 70 chambered in 6.5CM or 6.5PRC or 7PRC or 300PRC just seems weird to me. Nostalgia is a thing in the world of factory rifles. Some folks, like Pieter, do not seem to experience, or care much, about nostalgia. To each their own.

I grew up reading hunting magazines with articles by the icons of the 20th century. Most rifles were 30-06 when we went to the range or deer camp. I've taken a bunch of animals since I passed the hunter safety class my 6th grade homeroom teacher offered. First shotgun was a 1100. First rifle was a Ruger 77 in .270 win. I have become an expert still hunter, often seeing deer, pigs or elk that don't know im there. This new shooter thing about 500+ yards shots is not hunting. My buddies and I studied archery tactics, so even if we screwed up we were in the zone. A group of blacktails walked between my buddy and I in the rain one morning so close we thought about touching one. We studied their food, moon phases, genetics... all before trailcams and fancy gear. Wearing army surplus camo and hi-teck boots. Moving quietly through the cover where animals are in the daytime is hunting. All the offspring of the 30-06 are excellent hunting cartridges.

I started hunting with a Marlin lever action .30-30 when I was 14 years old. When I turned 21 , I bought a Savage model 110 chambered in .30-06 and hunted for many years harvesting a lot of whitetail deer in Northern Michigan . Over the years I got caught up in “the magnum craze “ and hunted elk , mule deer and black bear with .300 Win Mag / 7mm REM Mag and .300 WSM while living out in Colorado . I’m 60 years old now and have sold off all of those big magnums and I have just recently found my way back to the good ol venerable. 30-06 once again in a Winchester model 70 Featherweight. I’m living back in Michigan now and primary just hunt whitetail deer and black bear , but I still go out to Colorado to hunt with my brother , and I never feel like I am under gunned for the elk hunts out there with a .30-06 in my hands . And I am looking to acquire some reloading equipment to work up some hand loads , because as you said , factory ammo is just watered down and the .30-06 has much greater potential than what factory ammunition can provide.

Newly published reloading data shows that you can get right at 2800 fps from a 180 grain bullet in a 30-06 with the right propellant and charge. I have no doubt that will a little recipe work-up you could get an even 2900 or more in some production rifles. But, go back 50 years and 3000 fps from a 180 grain bullet was 300 mag territory. 2900 from a non-magnum cartridge is nothing to sneeze at. 2985 from the .30-06 AI just makes the case for the 06 even more. Ref: Nosler version 8.3 .30-06 with a charge weight of 62 grains RL-22 pushing a 180 grain bullet to 2819 fps. Same source quotes .30-06 AI as 2985 fps.

He does have tunnel vision, but there is a 'new and improved' 30-06 out there, its just that it was created back in the 1920's I think. It is the P.O. Ackley Improved 40degree shoulder 30-06. It leaves the neck length alone but changes the shoulder angle to 40 degrees and straightens the body of the cartridge, giving the round another 100 to 150 fps in velocity. As to the shape of the '06, it had the taper and shoulder angle for reliable feeding and(more importantly) extraction under combat conditions. That's why John Browning kept the same dimensions when he scaled it up to the .50 caliber Mg round. That's also why the older dangerous game rifles had tapered cartridges. A dangerous game cartridge or a combat cartridge had to both feed and extract reliably every time or you got stomped, gored or shot when it didn't.

i elk hunt out west every year for the last 24 years, sometimes multiple elk. the furthest shot i've taken was 608 yards. most have been 100-250 yards. the prc to really really take advantage of it's design over a 300 win mag requires a longer action so they're not really compareable but the prc offers nothing over the 300 win mag in hunting situations. i love the creedmoor but within 400 yards it kills elk better than the creedmoor though the creedmoor works well if you pick the bullets well. if you want reasonable recoil and the bullet mass to shoot anything, the 30.06 does it all. no need for a brake, and i wouldn't really recommend a non braked 300 prc in a hunting weight rifle for really anyone to shoot.

Some of the "factory" guns shooting the newer cartridges will cost the same, or more, as customizing your 30-06 or 270 Win with tighter twist and longer throated barrel, to shoot the heavy sleeks, it will still shoot factory ammo that costs MUCH less than factory loadings of the new kids on the block. I would ALWAYS recommend .308 Win, 270 Win., and 30-06, for general use, and 243 Win or 6.5 Creed as whitetail and smaller. People getting started should buy what has the broadest available ammo and platform choices. Your point of the '06's beautifully long neck makes it great for loading the long heavies, but not bad for the short pills. Also, 308 and 30-06 will have quantities of surplus ammo and brass that will make them viable, even if loading for "daughter" cartridges, like 7-08, 25-06, 358 Win or 35 Whelen to name a few, that the PRCs will NEVER see. Piet isn't "wrong", but he isn't correct. If someone is wanting to get into PRC, PRC cartridges may be the ticket, but the do-alls of 30-06 Sprg or .308 Win, or 270 Win are 100% what should be recommended to someone testing the water as a hunter. One more point, then I am done for now... Does Hornady offer any "Custom Lite" ammo for their PRC cartridges? They do for 30-06 & 308 Win.🤨

Guy Minor (if I got his name right), guest host on Ulimate Reloader, called Pete and asked why he hunts with and shoots Berger bullets. Pete stated on the phone his Berger hunting bullets shoot so well he's considering using Berger hunting bullets for competition. So, I'm confused by the comments indicating he must be in bed with Hornady. I like Pete and his channel. I subbed awhile back. I also respectfully disagree with his comment on the 30-06 but I also don't take it to heart because I know what style shooter and hunter he is. I've personally gone way overboard this year having purchased too many Tikka T3x rifles chambered in 30-06 but I keep finding new Hunters (blued/wood stock) for prices around $785 delivered and the most common MSRP I'm seeing on the Hunter is $1039. My intent is to convert most to something a bit different unless they are extremely impressive at the range as they are. I've got plans for a 6.5-284 Norma, a 270 O'Connor, 280AI, maybe a 6.5-06.

I forgot to mention: the '06 has about the most recoil most people can withstand over long range sessions and still be able to shoot accurately in a hunting-weight rifle, say around 8 to 9 pounds with a good scope. The Ackley Improved version is probably at the upper margin of tolerable recoil in a hunting rifle for most shooters, especially casual shooters. As to its long range capabilities, it is easily capable of shots over 1100 meters, or in excess of 1200 yards with 180, 190 and 200 grain spitzer boattail projectiles, and can shoot well inside 0.7 moa with the right powders and projectiles. Both Ruger and Remington have/do produce long range hunting rifles which have heavy Sporter/light Varmint barrels in -06 that will go inside 1/2 inch with good loads. Remington's Longrange 700 is 8 1/2 lbs, has a 26" barrel, an HS Precision stock and a Timney trigger from the factory. With a good variable scope of sufficient power, it would still weigh around 9 1/2 lbs and would easily class as a long range rifle in 30-06. The extra two inches in barrel length would give a 60 to 70 fps velocity increase over factory velocities, and if you hand load, 180 grain loads in 'o6 can be pushed past 2800 fps easily and safely with some of the newer powders. Just look at the Hornaday and Federal Superformance type loads or Buffalo Bore's loads for the cartridge. Finally, the '06 was a long range cartridge before any of the long range crowd today or their fathers were even born. Hathcock used it almost exclusively for sniping in Vietnam, and so did a number of other snipers. It easily ranged to 1,000 yards and beyond then, and it does so now. It isn't the newest and bestest flavor of the week, but it is reliable, accurate, effective, capable and far more available, not to mention less expensive in all the factory loadings (I reload all of mine) than, say, the 6.5 PRC or the 300 PRC, the latter if which has significantly more recoil, and is a ballistic twin of the 300 Winchester Magnum, another cartridge that I shoot whose ammunition is more readily available, has just as much reach as the PRC, and costs about half as much.

I also own and shoot the .308 win, 300 Win Mag, 25-06, 35 Whelen and a couple of other calibers. All of them will easily reach out as far as I want to shoot game, and the .35's will kill pretty much anything at any distance any of the 'flavor of the week' cartridges will but with considerable more authority. I shoot a Sierra 225 Gameking or a 250grain Speer Hotcor at a nominal 2730fps or 2700fps respectively in them and have shot both loads in practice well beyond 800 yards accurately. I did get William Trotter to put muzzle brakes on both 35's and both 300wm's, though. They needed them with heavy bullets and loads.

I have nothing against the 30-06, I just have no use for it...Almost everything the 30-06 can do, the .308 can do cheaper and is inherently more accurate, whatever the .308 can't do, the 300 Winchester can do better than the 30-06 with the exact same bullets and the same powder charge. For Us reloaders, 30-06 Brass has also gotten prohibitively expensive and due to the pressure the '06 creates, it's notoriously hard on brass. With proper resizing protocols, the 308 & the 300 Win are both easy on brass...Keep in mind, the US Military abandoned the 30-06. for a reason*

I haven’t had the “hard on brass” experience” with 30-06. I would say the contrary. There is an argument to be made that 308 and 300 mag are a great combo. You could also say the 30-06 is in the middle and would be the best if you had only one.

@@hopefulballistics *I'm in my mid 60's and I've been reloading (including the 30-06, I reload for other shooters) since the 1980's...I've never shot at an animal or a target and then thought, "gee I wish I had a 30-06". These days, to almost all of us, with the price of components skyrocketing, every grain of powder matters. To avoid the detonation monster, even at minimal lodes, the 06 requires somewhere around 20%-30% more powder (predicated on the load you're working with) than the .308 (73 grains vs. 49 grains-. (approximate & respective) and up to the180 grain bullet, provides almost zero advantage over the .308. The 300 Win on the other hand, can handle everything the 06 can handle +, and has the advantage of a substantial increase in velocity & range over the 06 in all load incarnations...Which is exactly why, the 300 Win is the US Sniper's Team COC. High BC bullets at high velocity are absolutely lethal due to the high SD they usually come with...The Springfield has disadvantage of being stuck in the middle without offering any real advantage over either. Don't even get me started on my PALMA days with the 06...(short story-I had major issues with brass longevity)*

@@Fireworxs2012 guys the point of the video is that 300 prc isn’t the best comparison to the 30-06 and it definitely doesn’t have less recoil. And that 30-06 can still be great in 2024. You could definitely compare the 308 to the 30-06, but Pieter says throw the 308 away and replace it with 6.5 creedmoor.

Boone and Crockett brown bear record still held by 30.06. my lightweight 30.06 has less recoil than my heavier weight rifle with a muzzle break in 300 win mag. His recoil claim (peter) about the 300 prc is laughable.

When ever I hear talk about a cartridge, it in most cases, it is compared to the 30-06. (the old standard) I hear to much hype on what cartridge is better. Application determines that. Is a .308 better than a 22lr if I am only hunting squarrels? My opinion is get what is best suited for what you are hunting, keeping in mind the availability of ammo. The 30-06 isn't going away for a long, long time.

I don't take hunting advise from Australians. I love the old 30 06 and know African hunters who seldom use anything else even on Lion. Uncommon cartridges are just silly - For common hunting I like the 270 win mag, the 300 Wby and the 30 '06. I have dies for all of them. For Africa I carry the 300 Wby and a 375 H & H. - I have a 416 Rigby heavy but have only used it a couple times. Eagles Nest is right up the road from me just north of Taos.

I think too much is being made about cartridges that excel at long range and those used at ethical hunting range. Nothing wrong with any of the classics, 30-06 included. Dead deer is a dead deer, but the 30-06 has been doing it longer than most.

Opinions are like Butts, Everybody has one and they all stink. I agree that people can have opinions and disagree on many subjects - this is America. But with that said - my first and only 3.06 rifle is a 1954 M1 Garand. Love the rifle and I load my own ammo. Accurate enough for me.
