After losing a 2-year starter, I now ALWAYS keep a half-pint backup jar of starter in the fridge that I feed every couple of weeks. My current starter is now about 4 years old, and I'm not taking any chances. 😅 So glad you were able to revive Old Faithful!

Please tell me more about keeping a starter in the fridge? How long should i take it out before baking with it? How often should i feed. I need to know more about this low maintenance starter. My adhd is struggeling to keep up with daily feedings knowing i dont bake bread every week. HELP!
@nataliecuellar48589 ай бұрын
@@sunshineraymond2365 that was my question too. Also, I need to know about the discard. I have a discard in the refrig, it' hasn't been a week yet, but I need to know do I need to feed it or do I just use it as is. Also, do I take it out and let it set at room temp before baking w/it. I've watched SO many videos and I can't find one that will answer these questions. :( I am SOOOOOO NEW at this.
@sunshineraymond23659 ай бұрын
@@nataliecuellar4858 so, I've been doing it for a little while now. What i do is i feed it before I put it in the fridge. And then at the end of the week usually Friday morning or afternoon, I pull it out, and let the yeast finish fermenting. I will use this hungry starter to make a loaf of bread, and usually it turns out really well. The hungry yeast gets very active during ferment and proofing.

I’m new to sourdough so this is not expert advice, just what I’ve been doing. If you’re keeping it in the fridge, do this at least once a week. Let it sit on the counter for 1 hr. Then discard half, add 1/2c flour and 1/4c water. Mix it well and let it sit on the counter for 1/2hr before you put it back in the fridge. You can put the discard in a separate container in the fridge. Just google discard recipes. I’ve made tortillas and cinnamon rolls so far. Hope this helps

First of all Thank you for giving us an open door to your home and family. Second.... Thank you for making sourdough approachable!! I'm mobility disabled and in my early 50s and have always been intimidated of sour dough so basically flour and water 😂 I don't know why exactly I bake and cook a lot and have made Amish friendship dough ( a different kind of sour dough) So I bought an established starter with long sf history and I'm currently waiting for it to arrive on Friday. In the mean time I stumbled on your channel... Needless to say flour and water isn't so scary 😂 I made my own starter the other day just to see if I could actually make an active starter myself. I was worried because it's cold here and we haven't fired up the wood furnace yet which I usually use for proofing bread. So I wrapped my jar in a wash cloth and stuck it in my bread maker using the rise only setting.... Holy crap! I made a very active and happy starter!! I've learned I don't need any fancy equipment or 900 yet old starter. I can improvise with starter and make it my own. I can't wait to start baking and learning more! Thank you for the education and calming videos I love watching!

I worked at a fancy place in the late 80's in my neighborhood. They served bread that was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I have not found that bread at any place since that time. I bought a loaf for $3.99 of plain white sourdough (said on the package) and it was not sliced. It was so pretty. I have used it for toast, egg in the hole, and just warmed it up for bread as a side dish. I forgot how awesome it was and since I live alone I can freeze it and use it when needed. I warm it up after I slice what I want in the toaster oven. If I had more than myself to feed I would make this for myself but since I am alone I just buy it. After it's warmed up or toasted it tastes like I just baked it. FYI for folks that are not able to make it or would rather not make it.

Thank you soo much for this informative and amazing video. I am new to the sourdough bread-making and starter process. I love how you simplify this process. I do it a little differently but at this point in my sourdough journey more instinctively. Some need this explained in soooo much detail. It’s not that complicated

Loved the simplicity of your recipe and explanation. Much easier than most of the recipes out there with scales! When you have a chance, could you add to your amazon store front a similar glass jar to the one you use for flour? It’s huge and the wide mouth looks amazingly easy to grab as much as you need. Thanks!

Im new here too, and i love this lady. She is so spunky, alive. Ive subbed. Wow! A lot to take in. I'm 69, have memory, cognitive problems. I need you standing right beside me guiding me on girl, lol. My mom taught me how to make homemade bread way back in 60s, 70s.. I want to try the sourdough bread since I know it is healthier for you, I have bowel issues. I live in Canada 🇨🇦

I love your videos! ❤ of all the sourdough videos I’ve watched, you explained it the best, and I got confident enough to make my own starter! You made making a sourdough starter look a lot less intimidating.
