The H really shined in this video. I have both and tend to play M for the most part (woody, full, creamy, powerful) that said for recording the H sits on the eq so well. It’s like in between the v30 and the M imho

Yeah, the V30 is more midrangey, less top end clarity or sparkle, so it sounds more, um, noisy. It's good for 70's rock and certain specific applications, such as rhythm, overdubs, etc. But the Heritage cones have more personality and range available to be dialed in with your amp and guitar controls. The M seemed to overdrive more easily and fully, but the H has great overall tone.

Hi, your videos are really useful for me. Because you compare so many different celestion speakers. Right now, I can only hear the different of celestion speakers through IR. Listening your videos shows me how the real speaker sounds like. I'm currently planning to buy a 2x12 with celestion. So, I'm looking forward to watch your comparison between series and parallel connection.

I like the smoothness of the G12M. To me it's a huge advantage that they're less efficient - the power tubes work harder to push the same amount of volume, and they don't have that harsh midrange thing the V30 has. They sound BIG whereas the V30 just sounds loud. Greenbacks are the only thing that makes my 50W JCM800 even remotely usable in clubs.

The more distortion, the more the speaker is important
@amritjanardhanan
@amritjanardhanan 4 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily - the WATTAGE, the more the speaker is important. Speaker distortion has a very peculiar sound that most don't want. Even if you always play dead clean, you don't want a speaker that makes or sound nasal or muffled.
@Zantrop64
@Zantrop64 4 жыл бұрын
@@amritjanardhanan yeah, but the compression it gives with more volume is what can be important. Wattage isn't volume in many cases. I have a modded micro terror that can give insane volumes, but some amps with higher wattage can be quieter, depending on transistor is tubes, or the architecture of the amp. It's said A class amps are better sounding but way less efficient than many architectures. But wth do I know? I'm drunk I probably am saying the dumbest shit you'll ever read. Anyway, in my short experience, clean tones aren't as affected by the speaker as distorted ones, as they create a lot of high frequencies, that often requires to be muted so it isn't deafening. G'night folks

I prefer the G12Heritage, in my opinion it has less "hiss" by listening to this test. I have two V30, but I don't like them so much... They sound too sterile for my taste, I have the feeling that they want a lot of distortion to sound powerful. I also have a Celestion Classic Lead 80 in a 1x12 Palmer and I like it very much (not too middle freq. and nice bass/highs). This G12H will be my next purchase.

What happens when two speakers with different sensitivity values are matched? For instance, a G12M Greenback (98db) and a G12H Creamback (100db). The phase isn’t an issue. Only problem is that the higher sensitivity speaker will be louder and may drown out the characteristics of the other one!

Hop Pole Studios Thanks for the reply. In my case it could be a good thing since my Laney LA30BL sounds a bit too scooped in the mids (between 1k and 2k) with stock greenbacks loaded in its own 2x12 closed back cab. Replacing just one of those with a more mid focused speaker like the Creamback could solve the issue without being a too drastic change. Even thought I’m curious about the Neo one, I think I’ll benefit from the more efficient heavy magnet Creamback version, which, by the way, is the one I know the most. Do you think this could work, or the Neo or the g12m could work better in bringing out some more mids and smooth out the highs just a little bit (always paired with a greenback)? I think I’ll change one speaker first, and if it doesn’t work still I’ll replace both.

Hi, thanks for the nice demo. I have a Blackstar HT5R combo and changed the stockspeaker for a celestion V30. On the clean channel and the volume at max, it is still clean. No natural break up. Is this because the V30 is 60W and my amp only 5W? Will it make a difference if I install a lower wattage speaker like the G12H 30 ? Thanks
@adamsteelproducer
@adamsteelproducer 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Eddy- if your amp isn’t breaking up at max output, that may be by design- some amps just are that way. If you got a 30W speaker, you still wouldn’t be anywhere near making the speaker add breakup either. You may not even be close with a 15W Alnico Blue. Natural amp breakup does seem to be very amp dependent

I'm tired of hearing about the V30's "harsh mids", it's B.S.. Maybe the way YOU use it with your rig, or what you're expecting from it. It has a pronounced, very "vocal" mid hump similar to what a tube screamer does, warm highs, tight, growly lows, and it strongly imparts that character on your amp. Perfect for a lead player or fattening up single coils. It's similar to the G12H 55Hz but with more grit and mo' louder. The newer 25w does not sound like the vintage ones, that's a fact. They're much brighter and thinner. Not bad, but not the same. The 30w is pretty close to the originals but that aside, don't tell me the China-made Celestions sound the same as the UK, they don't. Guitarists are waking up and not buying overseas-made speakers and putting them in their beloved vintage western-made cabs or anything boutique or pro-level. They're not that much cheaper and it's just not cool. When we think of Rock and Roll, we don't think of some factory in Hong Kong. That's just for rubber toys.

“Bro” you don’t know how loud I was running these speaker setups. It was sufficiently loud. If you don’t like the sound I suggest you’re hearing what they really sound like rather than what your heavily battered ears are telling you in the room with the amp.

I'm not talking about resonance frequencies, rather the more general M and H variants. Actually.

I was talking about magnet sizes. G12L < G12S < G12M < G12H. Lighter magnets versions were generally forgotten I guess for the very reason you mentioned.

Ok, that’s fair. There’s very little I can find about those speakers from way back when (I have a set of G12Ls but they’re from the 2000s so I figured they were a modern design). If you know of any resources for those speakers from the original greenback release days, I’ll be happy to have a look

I'm not 100% sure, but I think Johan Segeborn (on KZbin) actually demoed one or both. He seems to own a quite a few vintage cabs and amps.

Yeah but the G12L and G12S I’ve seen are 80s or 70s designs and quite separate from the Greenback conversation, which is what the video (and the original statement) were about. If there’s no concrete evidence of early designs of those, I stand by my statement - in context of the video it’s in
