I agree it's the modern incarnation of a battleship. Unfortunately, just like a battleship it places all of its eggs in one basket and can do little that a fleet of smaller, less expensive warships can't. That is why most navies don't bother with large, expensive ships anymore. It's not like you need a 45,000-ton hull to support a 16-inch gun turret. A modern missile system can be mounted in virtually any hull, large or small.

The Kirov is more vulnerable than you think. The US Navy can easily destroy the Kirov. On The contrary, during ww2 in Pacific when Battleship no longer really mattered they were great option to escort carriers as battlecrusiers were fast and their lack of armor or weaponry didn't matter. And their armment was enough to be a great coastal support. Ironically Kongou Class Battalcrusiers made more war impact then mighty Yamato Class or more obsolete Ise Class and Fuso Class. Furthermore, despite Hood being Battlecrusier her strength was similar to Bismarck (tho by sheer luck of Bismarck crew she was hit in weak spot and ammo detonated)

Battlecrusiers were more economical in case of oil then battleships. And they didn't have to fight against battleships as there was better alternative - using aircraft

@JAG but in one thing u are right. The war on Pacific wasn't fought with Battlecrusiers and neither battleships. There were little flights between those capital ships. It has been in this deep refit at the dry dock at the Severodvinsk shipyard in Severodvinsk, Russia. It is currently nearing completion and it should be floated out of the dry dock in the coming days! So there will be two Kirov Class Battlecruisers once again! Also, on a side note, the new and very secretive submarine Khabarovsk has been under construction in the warehouse behind the Admiral Nakhimov. Now that the dry dock's basin has been flooded, we can expect that to be launched in the coming days as well. It is rumored to carry 6 of the Poseidon strategic nuclear torpedos.

I don't think you could efficiently. @@ParaPanos Well believe the delusions if you like. We can easily proof read what carriers are in fact for and it does not mean ground invasion. So you had no idea what is what, lol! Tell everyone here how will it take on one of our Perishers? No navy has detected one in over 70+ years now. We could be drilling holes in the hull without them knowing. Didn't think about how all CIWS and missiles cannot touch something under the water? Remember it's designed to hunt ships ... not boats. ;-) False claims never work out as in the case of the Titanic. I can't wait to see what Admiral Nakhimov (hopefully I spelt the name right) looks like after extensive modernisation. Then when Pyotr Veliky goes for her turn, she might be equipped even better with the S-500 batteries, although that's just an assumption. In any case, these two warships are already amazing, they should be serving maybe 2 more decades until Russia can roll out out of their shipyards the hefty Lidar class stealth destroyer-cum-cruiser or whatever class of warships they're called. They don't need aircraft carriers. They just need to be bullies in their own turf.

manutdhater, in the fall of last year, the Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation said that the Admiral Nakhimov would return to service in 2022. According to rumors, he will receive 80 universal cells for cruise missiles including Onyx, Caliber and hypersonic Zircon, and possibly up to 120 cells for the naval version of the S-400 and S-500 air defense / missile defense systems. A powerful ship will turn out. I also want to see this monster :)

The Kirov Class was obsolete the day construction began. They look very impressive with the tremendous number of weapons contained. Now for the rest of the story, borrowing from Paul Harvey, the weapons are far behind the west in ability. Then they have what would best described as marginal damage control equipment, which is critical when you have a vessel this packed with weaponry. One small hit and she goes like a Roman Candle. The biggest issue is crew training and experience. They have little or no sea time, little training, and moral is dismal at best. Basically it is one big target.
