Күн бұрын

Pyotr Velikiy (Peter the Great) is a heavy nuclear-powered cruiser, the flagship of the Northern Fleet of Russia. The fourth ship of the 1144 Orlan project (NATO: Kirov-class battlecruiser). The biggest battlecruiser in the world with a displacement of 26 000 tons, second only to aircraft carriers.
At the beginning of its construction in the 1980s, the ship was named Kuibyshev, and then Yuri Andropov. By the time it started service, it was given the name Pyotr Velikiy and carries it to this day.
The cruiser’s main objective is fighting the enemy ship groups, first and foremost the aircraft carriers, as well as protecting the sea from attacks. For that purpose, it is equipped with anti-ship supersonic missiles and a wide range of defensive measures against underwater, surface and airborne threats.
Thanks for watching!

@Johnston Steiner that's why for modernisation they are turning the 20 launchers for Anti-Ship missiles into 80 UKSK 3S14 VLS that can launch Land Attack and Anti Ship missiles (Kalibr and P-800 Oniks). and the Ships will carry at least two types of missiles anyway as Air Defense missiles will always be present (otherwise the ship is a sitting duck) so the Russians put them in their own launchers. same thing is being done in the Project 949A subs they have 24 Launchers for same Anti ship missiles that would be transformed into 72 UKSK launchers wich will give the subs land attack capability + the anti ship capability

I agree it's the modern incarnation of a battleship. Unfortunately, just like a battleship it places all of its eggs in one basket and can do little that a fleet of smaller, less expensive warships can't. That is why most navies don't bother with large, expensive ships anymore. It's not like you need a 45,000-ton hull to support a 16-inch gun turret. A modern missile system can be mounted in virtually any hull, large or small.
@VinnyLam
@VinnyLam 4 жыл бұрын
The Kirov is more vulnerable than you think. The US Navy can easily destroy the Kirov. The Arleigh Burke destroyers and Ticonderoga cruisers carry Tomahawk cruise missiles that can strike targets from a thousand miles away. The Kirov would get sunk by these missiles before they even knew what hit them.

Stunning. We were berthed across from a Russian warship at Navy Days in Belguim and it was sexy. Small, stinking, but bristling with weapons and looked great. We were a Type 42 Destroyer. Beautiful in our own right as we were a Batch 3 (HMS Gloucester). Arleigh Burkes, Type 23 Frigates and Tico class are the other best looking. We deployed with a French Lafyette class (stealth design) and that looked pretty good as well. I served on two Type 45 Destroyers and they are pretty gorgeous as well.

I don't think you could efficiently. I mean you can stick a gun without the ammo load and the whole under deck part but that would be decoration. under the deck they don't have enough space for more weapons or loaders. if they had they'd use it for more refrigirators for more autonomy at sea or fuel for generators/helos or ammo.

well, as we are speaking of russians, i'm sure someone has considerd sticking some tank turrets to the deck, like they did with their river monitors (although i do agree with kirov being second to the yamato, i wouldnt say its in terms of beauty, but in terms of raw destructive power, i think in terms of looks many whips actually beat the yamato, richellieu, dunkerque, scharnhorst, bismarck, or even hood do outshine the yamato, when it comes to aesthetics, but thats just my opinion)

To everyone in here saying that this thing would be sunk quickly, you don't know anything. The insides are specifically made to absorb the impacts of anti-ship missiles and it has many redundant components to prevent crippling damage. Basically all modern anti ship missiles are built in a narrow range of warhead sizes to be most effective against targets of 5-15,000 tons. The Kirovs are too large, subdivided, and redundant to be crippled by most modern missiled easily. Modern Russian anti-missile missile defenses are highly capable, and the Kortik CIWS systems are fully capable of shooting down whole salvoes of missiles. Point is, this thing was made to solo basically anything and come back to port alive.

@@ДмитрийШультимов well if its in gun range Missouri all day long. Outside of gun range, if Missouri launched all missiles, and Kirov launched all missiles, they both become reefs. but then again Missouri was built in the 40s so she might be a little tougher under the water line. I guess its just a matter of which one floats the longest after the engagement. but they both end up on the bottom i think in a head to head.

The cool thing about soviet / Russian nuclear powered warships is they have dual role...as after a few years in service, the nuclear reactor becomes more dangerous than the weapons on board, so all they need to do is moor it near the enemies shores to pose a threat....pure Soviet brilliance

The thumbnail's wrong. A REAL battlecruiser is much different than a regular cruiser. It's more closely related to battleships.

These Kirov class battle cruisers are the modern day battleships of the WW-II era - like the the Yamato and the Musashi of the Imperial Japanese Navy at 862 feet (263 meters) long and weighing in at 73,000 tons [Yamato Class] or the Bismarck and her sister ship Tirpitz of the Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine of 50,000 tons and 823 feet (251 meters). Bismarck was equipped with three FuMO 23 search radar sets, mounted on the forward and stern rangefinders and foretop - cutting edge tech of its day. But these modern age Kirov Battle cruisers with SLBM's, Hypersonic anti-ship missiles, CIWS systems and Guns, ECM and ECCM systems, these are warships that can sink fleets and destroy cities and small countries, and being nuclear powered, they don't have to worry for refuelling for years. Not something to be taken lightly or messed with, surely. And if the Russian Navy has launched them, believe it that its a part of a bigger naval threat assessment and countermeasure plan than we are aware of. Bad ass Battle Cruisers, these ships.

In other words, size does matter. It does not matter how you use it if you are driving a little dingy. Only a huge, steely, vessel will satisfy.

The P-700 isn't the main Russian AShM anymore, it's been replaced by the UKSK-launched P-800. Admiral Nakhimov will use these after the upgrade (additionally to Kalibr and Zircon), as do other existing ships in the Russian Navy.

She is a very beautiful ship. And the new red colour scheme looks great. (I guess visual camouflage is not a thing any more!) But I don't think she would last very long if she got anywhere near a carrier battle group in a war situation. And she is too big to be well suited to coastal defence, anti-piracy or policing tasks.

Reasonably unbiased take. The Kirov class has a lot of firepower but would have difficulty applying it. It was built to attack US carrier groups but doing so would be a suicide mission it could never complete. Oscar subs and land based aircraft are the best bets for the Russians. If I were the Russians, I would remove those old Granit missiles and drop in something like the Iskander rockets. Give it some real teeth at ground attack.
