CARL HART, PH.D.
Dr. Carl Hart is the Ziff Professor of Psychology in the Departments of Psychology and Psychiatry at Columbia University. Dr. Hart has published extensively in the area of neuropsychopharmacology. He is the author of the award-winning book, High Price: A Neuroscientist’s Journey of Self-Discovery That Challenges Everything You Know About Drugs and Society. He is also co-author of the textbook Drugs, Society and Human Behavior (with Charles Ksir). Prof. Hart has appeared on multiple podcasts, radio and television shows. In 2016, the city of Miami issued a proclamation declaring February 1 “Dr. Carl Hart Day.”
In 2020, he will release his new book, Drug Use for Grown-ups.
“Dispelling the Lies that the Psychedelic Community Believes About Drugs”
Dr. Carl Hart will discuss his upcoming book, Drug Use for Grown Ups, outlining some of the lessons he’s learned from studying psychoactive drugs in people for more than 20 years. He’ll detail the neurobiological, socio-environmental, and political forces that influence drug use and drug experiences. Particular attention will be paid to cultural biases ingrained in today’s communities. Dr. Hart will remind attendees that psychedelics are not unique in their ability to engender insight, growth, among other positive features users seek. As such, he will urge attendees to stand up on behalf of those who may use other substances in their pursuit of happiness.
Horizons: Perspectives on Psychedelics is an annual forum that examines the role of psychedelic drugs in science, medicine, culture and spirituality.

Really loved this talk. Drug elitism is certainly an issue even within "pro drug" communities that needs to be dealt with if we want to make true progress on this issue

Decriminalization means possession is changed to a violation rather than a misdemeanor or felony. Because it is a violation, that means the person who arrested is not entitled to an attorney if they cannot afford one. It means they are entitled only to a hearing or trial before a judge rather than a trial by a jury of their peers, and it means they can get up to a year in jail or a $1000 fine. We know what the result will very often be if someone is arrested for a decriminalized drug - they will spend a year in jail and not be convicted. When they leave they will no longer have a job. Because they have never been convicted they will not get rehabilitation services to help them get back into society, find a place to live, and get a job.

But when I decided to make my own LSD in '68 because I couldn't afford the $5 per hit the hippies were charging, I never imagined it would lead to this. I looked into PCP and all it has is that it's more likely to trigger a psychotic episode. Note that being in a psychotic episode doesn't mean more danger to others. The correct response is to restrain the individual and give them the help they need.

@@the-cleric4821 Thanks for the tip 👍🏽 I'm going to look into that. I'm not sure that I actually buy into to what he's saying but I do find it interesting. I heard him on the Joe Rogans podcast and he made a claim that drug use has no correlation with triggering mental illness' in those that are already predisposed to having them. I completely disagree. Just out of curiosity do you believe in the decriminalization of all substances?

@@nickcaputo7973 @Nick Caputo Yes, he's a professor at Colombia and I do find what he says interesting but I disagree with some of what he says. For example, I've heard him that the use of amphetamines does not increase the risk of developing mental illness in those who are already predisposed to developing mental illnesses. I disagree because the opposite effect has been documented. The lack of sleep alone can trigger mental health episodes in those who are predisposed. Hmm.. I'd have to rewatch the video to remember what I meant in reference to PCP but I think I meant I personally have never heard of PCP being beneficial or adding to someone's life. Maybe it can in microdoses but I'm not aware it.

It's the war on spirituality, it's dehumanizing. The true path is the one that leads the Soul to Godhead. We are, the I, false ego, is the Soul. No this is a myth. The Soul enjoys getting high. But it's still not the right path. They do , they feel lifted. Some of us wonder, how do I get Soul. A master, guru, and then activities that do not aquire extra karma. It weighs the Soul. The true path is the one that helps the Soul know Godhead. Food for our Electric friend. Psychedelics are food for the Soul.

@Kevin Green, do you know Carl personally? Carl knows drugs. He also knows the inherent bs baggage that has been heaped upon it. If I was to guess what you’re concerned about it would be likely a internal fear youre creating. Carl practices what he preaches onstage, and off, I support that, we all need too. Using an Amphetamine before a talk like this is absolutely appropriate! It’s absolutely useful and it obviously helped him keep linear focus, a strong output of great information always keeping in contact with the foundation of his life work! So he examples that professionals SHOULD come out of the closet about using drugs for the benefit of the world!! God bless Carl Hart! What worries me is seeing some fucking psychopath with a political agenda trying to kill Carl for what he’s saying and said about supporting drug use!! Lets keep that in mind.

Lando Cartel Carls work with Amphetamines has influenced me heavily. His academic-scientific-personal work, helped me to completely change my thinking, my bias on Amphetamines, specifically Methamphetamine. The USA & the world at large has completely demonized, scapegoated and stereotyped Amphetamines in a negative way for decades. That must stop.
