This was a hard decision for me because I LOVE Horizons math! One of my other children still uses it, but every child is so unique. So, I'm sharing a personal experience of why it didn't work this time around.

Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. It was exactly what I needed to hear. Horizon Math 1 has been such a struggle for my son. And I have felt the same struggles you shared. I just kept encouraging him,and pushing thru. Telling my husband every few weeks, maybe we should cut back on the lessons....... Yet, in my heart I knew 6 months ago this was not the best fit for him. I too dreaded math with him. Wondering what his attitude towards it would be everyday, feeling stressed and frustrated and both exhausted after a lesson. I have loved Horizon. But it is not best for HIM! And my heart just hit rock bottom for him. I also had a good conversation with my son yesterday, which helped me understand his struggles with Horizon. Your words and affirmation to do what is best for our children was what I needed today! I also watched your other video on editing Horizon Math lessons. That is so helpful for my other child who loves Horizon and loves Math. But we felt bogged down by too much review. Sorry this is so long. But your video brought me to tears. It is helpful to know I am not alone in this dilemma. Thank you for taking the time to share!

Oh my goodness - thank you so much for this! Your kind words and support of my videos is so encouraging. It is truly what I hope to do here - help and connect with other moms in the same shoes. Hearing your story helps me too! It's funny every little sentence I read of yours, I was thinking, "YES!...YES!" because it is exactly what we went through! Our children are all so unique, and I'm so thankful through homeschooling we can adjust to do what's best for them. Thank you for reaching out to me and sharing that :)

That looks difficult for K! Glad you found something that works for you. We are using Math with Confidence for K and really liking it.

I've heard great things about Math with Confidence! Horizons was definitely advanced for my kindergartener. Although, my oldest daughter loved it when she was in kinder. So, i think it all depends on the child. However, with my other two little ones growing up, I may choose something more gentle and slower than Horizons when they're ready to begin.

Hi! I love your video and channel overall 😊 Thanks for making the video because I think Horizons is a fabulous curriculum that doesn’t get talked about enough. That said, it is advanced and is better suited for a child where math comes easily. My son is 9 and headed into 5th grade and he will be doing Horizons 5 (he’s done 2,3, and 4). He loves it and has pushed back any time I tried something new. My daughter who is 7 and going into 2nd used Horizons K and 1. This fall we will be using Math with Confidence 2. I realized that although she was doing the work it wasn’t sticking with her and her number sense wasn’t where I wanted to be. Sorry for the long comment but I just wanted to encourage you and say yes we do have to do what’s best for the kiddos and us! ❤️ Glad you found something that works🥰🥰🥰

THank you so much for sharing this! It is definitely so encouraging. You are so right though. I also feel that Horizons is best for your kiddos that math comes easy. I did look into Math with Confidence for my daughter. It seemed like a really great program. I hope you love it!

I love CLE math so much! My 2nd grader is using it and he scored at a 3rd grade level in math. Which of course made me feel better. This is our first year homeschooling so I’m constantly second guessing myself on curriculum.

We will be starting our fourth year next year and I STILL second guess things. LOL I think it's just part of being a mom, at times ;) We always want what's best for our kiddos! We started CLE and absolutely LOVED it. We will definitely be using it for our first grade year for my 6 year old. I love how it's set up and how easy it is for me to follow.

What did you think of Christian Light math? Do you have an update video on it? I saw that you're using Math With Confidence this year!

I liked it. It’s pretty fast paced and easy to follow. It really helped my daughter become more independent in math. I think it’s a great program but after a year of using it (and Horizons before that) I realized I wasn’t a fan of all the spiral review. We were skipping a lot of it which was great but sometimes I just craved a deeper lesson in a topic if that makes sense. This year I am using Math with Confidence with my second grader which has been amazing. It’s very hands-on and has really helped her grasp her math facts better. My oldest is using Apologia which is a mastery program and has much shorter lessons.

We are doing Horizons 4 and thinking of level 2 for my other daughter… but I could not imagine having this level of work in the earlier years!

Yes, - the level of work in the early grades is very fast paced and requires many problems to complete. This worked just fine for one of my daughters but not my other one. Every child is so unique and I'm seeing that more and more in our homeschool journey.
