It is beautiful. Don't know how much wind you get at this location, but it's usually advisable to leave air gaps between slats to allow air to flow through the fence rather than creating a solid barrier. Doesn't take much wind pressure (psi) over hundreds of thousands of square inches to put tons of force on it.

Good Looking! Only change I would consider would have been using a rounded or champferred top rail to keep water (or snow for us mountain folk) from pooling. If you look at older fences like mine, it's the flat top rails that split & rot long before any other fence boards. I do like the look.
@scotttovey4 жыл бұрын
Nice fence April. Using the spacer, I would have to start at the bottom and rest the spacer on the bottom board while attaching the top board. If I did it the way you did, I wouldn't get very many boards up, let alone getting them up level. I think the template method is perhaps the best way of doing it, but I would want two templates; one on each side so that I could put the boards in place, and then just go down the line and nail them.

It is mentioned elsewhere in the comment section, but this style of fence is seldom seen for good reason. Basically this fence is a huge wind break, and extremely weak, even if when 6×6 posts are used ...steel posts could be used but the likelyhood that this fence will blow down in a couple of years is very high. You need to incorporate some method of allowing the wind to pass through the fence. Expect trouble when building this type of fence.

Next year, Spray Thompson's Water Seal on the fence? My only concern was Wind Load on the fence. How deep did your Post Holes go?
@plasmac94 жыл бұрын
In the other video it looks like the posts are 2 feet into the ground with 8 feet above ground. All the posts are concreted in from the bottom of the holes to the ground level. I think she said they used 2 80 pound bags of concrete per hole. It sounds like it would be sturdy enough but in high winds the entire fence my rock or be "wavy." Would have been better to be in the ground 4 feet and use 4 bags of 80 pound concrete just to be safe. But maybe they don't get high winds there, maybe the ground gets too rocky past 2 feet. They're in Texas so they don't have to worry about freeze/thaw every winter so it's probably not code to have to be 4 feet like up in the northeast.
@larrybe29004 жыл бұрын
Two feet, I believe into pretty "solid" ground. I believe the issue there would be the strength of the cedar 4x4 at ground level. I do believe if there was a forecast for excessively strong winds I would support it if only three of four spots along the length of the fence. Sure easier than the alternative should it happen. Anyone that has tried to handle a 4x8 sheet of plywood in a breeze knows the pressure wind has on a flat surface. Add to this the surface is not flat but has pockets all along the length of the fence.
@josephdecesaro15284 жыл бұрын
She is near Austin central TX so her windstorms are not to bad. She used 6 ft spacing too adding a bit more sturdiness. Here in south TX I live near the coast and wind code for fences here are 2 ft deep on 8 ft spacing on a 6 ft tall fence. If you go 6 ft spacing you can do 1' 6" deep and anything over 6 ft tall need 3 ft deep no matter the spacing. Unfortunately here there are no laws on if you have to use concrete or not.
