Dan, that’s a good danged gate! And, the smell is awesome too. My neighbor has a metal gate… he hung it from the low side. Then he dug the road bed out with his bucket loader. By the time he got done he had a pond in the entrance. I went by after the first rain and water was standing under the gate. I told him that putting that pond under the gate was a good idea. Because, now the cows could get a drink without having to walk all the way down to the creek!!! After it got rutted out about a foot deep he moved the hinges to the other end. I hauled him some gravel and filled in the pond. He told me the other day that he’s glad he hung it wrong… otherwise the entrance would be a muddy mess! I didn’t tell him that it would have been simpler just to hang it right and fill the low side. I just said, “Yep. Good thing!” Dan, sometimes the simplest way is hard!

How would you go about having the gate open to the inside? Just put the hinges on the inside? or is there a different build required? The way you showed it opens to the outside - many municipalities require the inside swing.

Yes that’s correct. Just make sure the back side of the gate and the post are on the same hinge plane.

Off the back side? Yes, you sure can--you just need to have enough framework to screw your hinges to securely--so you'd have to modify accordingly.

You guys are the bomb! I'm building a 6 foot gate. I think I'll put 3 hinges on it. What do you think???
@SWiFence Жыл бұрын
Nope. Wouldn't recommend it. 2 hinges should be plenty. 3 hinges invites lots of trouble with binding/things not lining up just right. Not saying you can't do it--but it complicates things and we haven't found the need. 👍🏻

When setting your posts do you set them high and then cut to height after setting in concrete using a laser level? If yes what tool do you find best to trim the metal Postmaster Posts?

We try to set them the height we want them so no trimming is needed, but if we need to trim the bandsaw is the way to go. 👍🏻

When building a Kentucky 4 board fence with a gate how do you determine the pocket depth and the radius that would connect back up to the straight-line fencing? so, you have room to drive in and make the turn radius when leaving your driveway, a rule of thumb for a ratio or point me to one of your videos please.

There's no need to cement your hinge post as long as you can achieve 36" pounding depth or greater (based on your soil conditions).

Is there a way you could do this with a double wide gate? I'm looking to make a gate a width where a vehicle could pass.
@SWiFence Жыл бұрын
Yes there is--we just don't have a video on that yet. What we do is build a metal frame out of chain link pipe, and then hinge it on 4" SS40 chain link posts, then attach the nailers and pickets to the frame.

What is your pricing like using the Postmaster Post? Do you price below wood since you can do it faster, or above because it is a premium product?
@SWiFence2 жыл бұрын
We only use PostMaster posts so if our customers want cedar, that's what they get. It definitely comes in above wood since it's a good deal more costly--but now that we've experienced the quality and longevity we can't go back.

Just found your videos researching Postmaster+ as an alternative to my original plan, which was using a Slipfence system, which are outrageously expensive. These are really helpful, thank you. I notice here that you're just using the standard line posts here for your gate, rather than the Postmaster+ gates posts. Any reason for that? I'll follow your method, because the idea of having a wood fence with two random black powder coated posts at the gate was bugging me, but I was just wondering why you go this route. Thanks again!
@SWiFence2 жыл бұрын
They haven't always had gate posts, and we've always had great success using the standard posts for everything (even corners)
@jcsorensen42 жыл бұрын
@@SWiFence Thank you! I think I'll plan on using the line posts then. By the way, do you have any videos on how to make non 90-degree turns using these?

No, sorry. If it's anything more than a slight bend you're probably going to want to put a terminal post there as well.

Something we always do is take tee hinges and create butterfly hinges for our horizontal gates, then you don’t have to do any extra work at all for making your hinges fit.

Did you notice any sag in the gate a week or even a month later? My gate has shifted a few inches since set up, I’m going to chalk that up to settling, and not a poor fence design. After all the post is 24 in deep and sunk in 160lbs of concrete
@SWiFence Жыл бұрын
It's important to figure out if the post has shifted, or the gate is sagging. Make sure your tension brace is running the correct direction. And if you haven't, you might want to install a anti-sag cable (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXSkfaBoZZ58nJY). If your post has shifted though, you'll have to detach and reattach the gate to straighten it back out. It's not going to look amazing but it's better than a sagging gate.
@Mankick Жыл бұрын
@@SWiFence yes, the compression brace it the correct direction, but I do no have an anti sag cable, yet. I will check the post again, hopefully I do not need to re-attach the gate, but I will keep all options open for the moment.

Can I do this with 4x4 wood posts?
@SWiFence2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you absolutely can. We don't ever set fence with 4x4 posts because they rot out--which is why we moved exclusively to steel. But the principles would be the same if your posts are wood. 👍🏻

@SWiFence6 ай бұрын
Well, that’s unfortunate. I'm assuming the lumber was a little wet. As it has dried, it has warped. Check if the bottom horizontal part of the gate is causing the issue. If so, based on the extent of the warping, I would consider replacing that 2x4.

We use the hardware provided with the hinges, and if we need to drill through the post to install a bolt, we use a black powder-coated chain link bolt.
