Being new to muzzleloader. I asked on forums and FB about what to get and the most common answer was XTP’s specifically the ones with the black sabots but when I asked no one would explain what the difference was and why the black over the green. I go to the shop and was handed the green. I say everyone said the black and was told the greens were the biggest seller. I get to the range and experienced what you did with a tight barrel. Sighting in at 50 yards I have my first group of three with two touching in the bull. I load the third and my range rod stopped between 1/8-1/4” above the mark I was able to make on the new clean barrel. I shot and the third hits about 3” high and about an inch right. This continued at the range and I ended up swabbing the barrel every two shots. Fast forward to the opener last week and I long story short shoot a buck twice and it hasn’t gone down yet and gives me the opportunity to make a third shot but I know I need to swab the barrel because I know the bullet won’t seat. I go to swab it and my crud ring grabbed the jag and I couldn’t pull it back out. I am having a mini melt down trying everything I could to pull it out. The deer ends up wandering down the field edge and another hunter put it down. Once I calmed down I realized I could unscrew the rod from the jag and take the breech plug out and push the jag back up and pull it out. When he got down he called me over telling me it’s my deer. I told him it was his since he put it down. He then told me both my shots were killing shots and he anchored it. I took it after I saw where I hit. The next day I shot with a single shot the biggest public land buck I have shot. These were my first and second NJ firearm deer but I have shot about 150 with a bow having bowhunted only since 1991. I will be trying new ammo and powders to find what works best now that I am tagged out.

Yikes!! What range was the buck? That story another give my pause to using the green sabot. Glad the other hunter was a good sportsman. Good luck with finding a new combo to use.

@@suburbanhunt3653 Gun was sighted in for 50. My one month old range finder crapped out for some reason and gave me no reading. I thought it was 75 but turned out about 100. I held the first BDC line below the cross hair on it and shot. When I got the deer I have no idea how it didn't drop. I hit about an inch below the pocket behind the front leg. I have shot many deer with the bow there and they have been dead in seconds and rarely made it 30 yards. The second shot was same height but back and hit center mass. I took out the diaphragm and stomach which is always deadly but takes a while. It stood for another shot but then the ram rod got stuck. Most have said just switching to BH 209 will eliminate that issue but I haven't been able to find any to try it.

@@suburbanhunt3653 I am going to try loose 777 in the fffg configuration because I was told it would burn cleaner and leave a lesser crud ring for the same 100 graisn as the pellets and more than likely get the same speed with about 10-15% less powder which will also reduce the crud ring. What bullet and primer would you suggest to try out of a new Optima V2? I am going to try the 300 grain XTP with the black sabot but not sure what else. I am using the Federal 209 MZ primers but was told they are not good for BH 209. First I’d like to thank you for all you do to inform muzzleloader hunters! I shoot two TC’s and they both love XTP projectiles! You need to measure your bore to make sure you’re using the right sabot for the bullet diameter. I have a TC Encore and a TC Vortex and I only shoot XTP’s with fantastic success! I’ve shot .429 240 gr for a few years with 1” 100 yards groups and two 777 50 gr pellets. The only thing I didn’t like with them is I never got a pass thur but all the bullets I recovered were perfect mushrooms! Now I only shoot 300 gr XTP’s with 1” or less groups at 100 yards! The best shooter is my TC Encore. I shoot three 777 pellets with the black high pressure sabots with 300 gr XTP’s it shoots 1” or less all day long and it’s a hammer on deer! I’ve never recovered a 300 gr XTP and I’ve killed deer out to 205 yards with a rangefinder! I’ve taken a lot of friends to the range and made their muzzleloaders shoot lights out with 300 gr XTP’s. It helps because I was a firearms instructor with NYS Law enforcement. I’ve made the tight green sabots work in tight bores using lube on the sabot but that’s not how it shoot be done! Finally, I don’t know if you know what lapping a barrel is but here’s a little on that with out going into depth. Take some 4/0 steel wool put a piece on your barrel with bore cleaner and push it down the barrel back n forth at least 50 times and continue with new steel wool and lube. Doing it 100 times isn’t too much! That will smooth out you lands and groves so no plastic from your sabot doesn’t leave plastic in your barrel that impedes your accuracy. Don’t give up on XTP bullets because I think they’re one of the best muzzleloader projectiles out there! Good Luck and God Bless!

The 240 grain XTP is a short bullet with a pretty low BC may not stabilize at magnum velocity's with your twist rate . I would love to see this done with the 300 grain XTP which is longer and a higher BC. I have used the 300 grain XTP years with great results on game. The 3oo grain XTP carries a lot more energy down range than the 240 grain bullets do.

They make a nice round hole in the paper if nothing else. Overall I have confidence in these. Hornady ELD-X and the old school 250 SST also did well in my test. DJ, thanks for doing that test. I wanted to see how the other pellets and charges would group with the XTP's. I use the green high pressure sabots made by Harvester and buy the.430 XTP bullets separate to make each shot a little cheaper. And to answer your question ,they are a little tight in my Optima V2 LR , but not super tight. I do swab with 91% alcohol/Windex mix and then 3 dry patches between shots at the range. I am only using 2 triple 7 pellets and get around a 1.5" group at 100yds. Thanks again for doing that test with the XTPs 🙂

When I first got my CVA Kodiak Magnum, I was loading it with 100 grains of Pyrodex pellets using these 240 grain Hornady bullets with the green sabot. My results were very similar to yours. After some research, I found this to be common and that increasing the load to 150 grains further compromised accuracy. The prevailing wisdom was directing shooters to transition to loose powder. I went that route, and now that same bullet and sabot are shooting one inch groups with 85 grains of Pyrodex RS at 100yds. I loved the convenience of the pellets, but the powder enables my CVA to shoot as accurately as a centerfire.
