That is definitely a base Hornby body, but modified (pretty well) to represent the 1930s era streamlining experiments. While not to everyone's taste, the actual modelling done there is pretty decent!

Excellent video - looks like someone's sent you a modified engine! There is a video on KZbin from 6 years ago of a Hornby King being streamlined. Looks like you've got it. Search "Hornby GWR Streamlined King (Henry VII) (Part 2)" to find it. Keep up the excellent tutorials.

I was so surprised by this model that I looked up this loco and apparently it was streamlined in March 1935 but the streamlining was removed from 1937 onwards except for the cab which remained streamlined until 1953. I expect the GWR wanted to have a streamlined express loco to match the LMS Coronations and the LNER A4's at least in appearance. I think they failed on that score! The King class didn't need streamlining to be a top performer. Indeed the Coronations were all de-streamlined in due course. Great video again. Have a great 2023 Bill!

Very good . Loco doesn’t do it for me either . I know the GWR experimented with streamlining to keep up with LNER and LMS , but it still looks very much like an afterthought . I wonder who did the body though. Looks very professionally done

"looks very much like an afterthought" Well, that's what it literally was!
@lokoiutfftty Жыл бұрын
The history behind it was Collett was pressured by the PR in GWR that they had to offer some sort of streamline design since LNER, LMS and Southern all had their offerings of streamline design; A4, Streamlined Duchess and the Spamcans respectively. So he had a model of a King on his desk, picked up some plasticine or clay, mushed it over the body to make it somewhat streamlined and said "there you go"

4-6-0 6014 King Henry VII was built at Swindon in 1928, initially allocated to Newton Abbot, Laira shed and then Stafford Road, in 1935 she had shrouds fitted to her tender, main body, cab, steam chests and notably her nose end giving the locomotive a somewhat bizarre appearance, the streamlined shrouding made no clear improvement in her performance or economic advantages and by the early 1940's the shrouding excepting the cab were removed at Swindon, King Henry VII was then allocated to Old Oak depot where she was mostly doing the Wolverhampton--Paddington (Via Bicester) services. In 1955 along with most of the class she was fitted with 4-row superheaters and double chimney blast pipes considerably improving their performance, a slight modification was done to her leading bogie frame notably a horizontal slot was cut to increase draught and lighten the frame weight, later the King's leading frames were all strengthened which meant LMS Coronations and Princesses were drafted in whilst the Kings were modified. In the late 1950's 6014 King Henry VII was allocated to Wolverhampton Stafford Road and became a familiar stalwart on the Wolverhampton-Snow Hill-Paddington services until she was withdrawn in September 1962, in March 1963 she was taken to Langley Green Oldbury and scrapped by Cox & Danks. 6014 King Henry VII had covered 830.386 thousand miles in her 34 year career. The distinctive curved cab front did give the locomotive a purposeful appearance and would have given a taste of what the proposed "Super King" 4-6-2 would have looked like (Very similar to a "Princess" Class). As far as known currently no official "Streamlined" King or Castle (5005 Manorbier Castle) has been released and are more often scratch-built.

Thanks Bill for another challenging repair which you solved quickly. I find the hard bit with some of these is the tight wire feeds from pick-ups to motor. I wondered why the repair parts tend to be in wheelsets nowadays, you answered my question. Wishing you a happy and good 2023.

Had a similar problem with a Hornby King Arthur class.Mine was so bad it would not go. Went the same route as you. The wheelset wasn't too dear. Great tutorial. I'm not sure about the streamlined design although it's a part of GWR history. Thanks for showing. Regards Paul.

Unfortunately a common issue, and depending when it was made and it's replacements I expect that may well be back in again. The body shell was I think done/modified by Mark Seward, during the streamlining of the 1930's.... it was a one off, SR Schools also had a Plywood mock up made of a mock up streamline.
@JPoulAndersson Жыл бұрын
King Henry VII was a half-hearted attempt at streamlining by C.B. Collett to modernise the GWR "look" in the style of the times. Unlike with Gresley's and Stanier's engines it remained a one off. This Hornby body has been professionally modified a quality job! Joachim
@TallboyDave Жыл бұрын
Not exactly; it was the only 'King'-class to be 'streamlined', but a similar casing was also applied to 5005 'Manorbier Castle' around the same time.
@charlesemerson6763 Жыл бұрын
I had the same problem with a couple of the Royal Scots. One of them went through three gear wheels. It was a sad fact of life that Hornby's quality control wasn't great in the early 2000's .

I had a similar issue with my Silver/grey A4 but found that Hornby don't do spare driving wheels for the super detail version - only the railroad one. Also found out that the quartering of the RR ones is 180 degrees different to those in the super detail loco! - good old Hornby
@michaelcrane3327 Жыл бұрын
I saw one of these appear on an auction site a few weeks back. 'Hornby GWR King Class modified to the 1930's streamline model, repainted and renamed 6014 King Henry V11' It was on a chassis with the old hornby tender connection so not the same as this one however the conversion on this looked just as good. I can only assume someone has made a resin body that can be resprayed as I cannot see the tell tail signs of filler and rubbing down on yours or this example.
@robinforrest7680 Жыл бұрын
Apparently it wasn’t C B Collett’s cup of tea either. The GWR marketing department decided that streamlining was trendy and would demonstrate the GWR was a modern forward thinking company, just like the LNER. Apparently the the streamlined LMS Coronations were also done for the same reason and W Stanier was as about as enthusiastic about it as Collett was 😂. It didn’t last very long on the Kings. An absolute PITA for maintenance.

Neither Hornby or Lima have ever made a streamlined King or Castle. I don't ever recall them being RTR. Mine , like that one , are based on a standard King model
@stormus65 Жыл бұрын
Afaik, it's a Hornby body and there may have been a resin superdetailing kit available in the 1990s to make the streamlined GWR Manorbier Castle and the King you're working on in this video. That or the locos details have been scratchbuilt. The GWR streamlining wasn't that effective and was only on the locos for a short while.

From great Western archive: 6014 King Henry VII. Built May 1928. First shed allocation Newton Abbot. Fitted with streamlining from March 1935, but all removed by January 1943 except for 'v'-shaped cab. August 1950 shed allocation Old Oak Common. 'Alfloc' water treatment fitted 1954. Double chimney fitted September 1957. March 1959 and last shed allocation Wolverhampton, Stafford Road. Withdrawn September 1962. 1,830,386 miles. Scrapped at Cox & Danks, Oldbury. You were right about the model being a Lima L205103a-PO27 Class 8P 'King' 4-6-0 6014 'King Henry VII' in Great Western green from 1978, when did Hornby take over Lima? is it possible the Hornby used the non streamlined L205103a-PO59/PO73 body shell when they did their versions if they where released post 1978? Would this be why this model has a Hornby chassis?

Hi Bill - Happy Hogmany. The spur gear and the driving gear are very weak points with these models. I bought a 'Britannia' class loco as a non-runner and sure enough, on stripping it down the spur gear was split. The plastic is just not up to the job - it has to cope with a lot of strain if you regularly rue 9 coach trains. Surely the cost of brass gears wouldn't be that prohibitive when manufacturing the models.

Hi Bill. The King class is a real brute of a loco. As for the streamlining it really didn,t suit the Western loco's. But that is not the reason for my comment. The question that I have is two fold. First , is there not some one out there who makes brass gears to fit in these and other loco's ? Also could this also be applicable to Bachmann and there plastic axle's ? There must be a question of quality control with these two companies. They must know that these parts are failing. Or is it their way of making more money ? They can't seriously expect people to be spending their hard earned cash on products that fail. I mean you wouldn't by a chair on the understanding that it will collapse under your own weight would you ? I think that they are producing goods down to the lowest cost and using inferior parts while increasing the cost to their customers. So the question remains , who can produce bronze or brass main gears or axles ? Please tell me what you think. I know that Comet models make brass kits , would they be the alternative ? I have two King class loco's. King George V in express blue and King Charles I in brunswick green. Another great video , thanks. Good luck.
