I've probably bid on more Duchess of Sutherlands on eBay than any other loco! Finally won this old one which is a bit worse for wear. Lots to fix on this so I've made it a two part video. Will it run? You'll need to watch Part 2!

Interesting loco. The amount of ringfields you have serviced - you ought to write the book

Hi Bill. From what I could see from here yes it's a Zero one chip. The illuminated front light was the reason I wanted one as a teenager. Seemed cool. A yellow led in there works so much better. As for the broken pin...One suggestion is to leave it 2 wheel drive, but fit a traction tyre to both driven wheels. You would have to assist pick up of course. A better way is to use the brass rod as the new spindle, but fit into a drilled hole as you say. Epoxy in place as solder won't take to all that diecast. I wouldn't grind it all off else you won't be able to find the centre, just grind close, then centre drill, then the full drill will clear it level anyway. Good luck! Gary

Hi Bill The contact at the front is to light a bulb which illuminates a strip behind the two front lamps on the buffer beam. Incidentally, if you check Lendon's of Cardiff website, you can usually get free service sheets to download. Others may be available via Hornby website.

Hi Bill, Glad you finally managed to get a Duchess. Shame about the motor. How about using some brass rod rather than a nail for the spindle. Would be more hardwearing. Good luck with the rest of the repair. I do not know if this will be of any use to you, But on Ebay at the moment is this ringfield chassis. Do a search for " Hornby Ringfield Motor Bogie CD Motor Conversion and More :-". It is £19.99

Drill it out and fit a 2.5 mm dowel pin, silver steel would be a good candidate.

Hi Bill The problem with T Cut is not the abrasiveness, it is the acidity. If there is any residue left it will pit the copper OR (worse still) eat into the copper winding. That is why you have to clean it all off with contact cleaner/isopropyl alcohol.

The Bulb is for the 3 small front lights above the Buffer Beam . There should be a clear Plastic thingy that transfers the light from the Bulb to the 3 lights. I have found on My Sutherland that this system It's a bit Naff.

I'm waiting with baited breath, the nail idea for the spindle is an excellent piece of improvisation. 🤞

My Railroad Evening Star has the same spindle issue; it was a project and the tender motor is actually an old made in England one that was kindly supplied by a good friend, rather than the Chinese one it should have. In reverse it makes the most awful grinding and clicking sound, but it’s silent going forwards so it doesn’t bother me too much.. just happy to have a 9F for 25 quid!

It's very true what you said about being more economical to buy a complete loco just to get the motor. In the not too distant past when you could buy a half decent Flying Scotsman or Duchess of Sutherland for under £30 you could easily break them up and sell the constituent parts for a decent profit very often getting as much for a motor as yo paid for the whole loco.

Hi Bill, watched this video a couple of times with interest. Firstly, I too, like this loco a lot, as one of my first repairs was the Duchess of Sutherland (hence my handle!). Secondly, I have recently purchased a Lima King George V with exactly the same wiring arrangement between the tender and loco! Perhaps we bought from the same seller? Anyway, as I'm about to work on 'The King' over the weekend, it will be interesting to see if I also have a Zero 1 decoder. I will certainly follow your advice on the ringfield! Cheers, Jim L

Hi Bill, new to your KZbin videos.....very interesting. No fan of the ringpiece motors, they are a disaster when compared to the XO4 arrangement. thankfully this application has gone to the dustbin of history. Regarding the worn post. My preferred method would be, to drill out and either fit a brass post using a Loctite agent or drill and tap to accommodate a cheese head screw that has a plain section. Good luck with the repair. Bill

Hi.. Wasn't expecting such a large loco to also be tender drive...'Tis a bit kookie that one powered truck (bogey ?) has to push the weight of loco in front of it ( = [maybe] 1-2 coach/car weight), who's weight itself is thus un-available FOR tractive effort.. I thought OO WAS larger than HO precisely SO that HO sized motors CAN fit in Brit cab/boiler... Yet here we have an empty loco... On the other hand, it DOES leave a ton of room IN loco for a decoder and speaker (where ideally they should be, ha ha !!) No negativity meant A-toll ! ..I enjoy your vids allot and many Brit 1:1 and MRR subjects !! I'm only 4 minutes into Vid.. Looking forward to THIS mysterious detective show to unfold !! Really got your work cut out for you this time, Bill !! ...... M., Los Angeles

In their day the Hornby Ringfield motor in the tender was more efficient than the loco mounted X03 and X04 motors. It's quieter, smoother running and allowed pick up from both loco and tender. I was never keen on the idea at all but having now run and serviced many I think they are absolutely fine if kept well maintained. I can absolutely see why Hornby went down that road. Nowadays, of course, you can fit a very efficient coreless motor with flywheels in a loco body and have pickups in both the loco and tender to allow even better running. Progress.
