Call me old fashioned, David, but such customer service should be the gold standard; not that Deerail should not be commended, but it's typical with anything you purchase, now - there's little or no loyalty to the customer, & sadly, when we do witness such, it's perceived as some sort of revelation - & that's precisely why Hornby are up to the hilt in debt, no profit margin, & have more unsold stock, sitting in warehouses. Their business model is in serious need of an overhaul.

& so they should, Guy - no excuse for elevating prices, thereafter. I have no truck with the ethos of, "getting what you pay for", but I find in the modern Hornby business model, cynical greed & cost-cutting are not an attractive selling point, or indeed a sensible manoeuvre....we shall see what transpires.

I think the firebox lighting effect shows up best when the crew figures are installed - their blue overalls are far lighter than the cab interior, and would, along with the flesh colour of their hands and faces, reflect the red and yellow light quite well.

WOW, what a beautiful model. Thanks for the review Sam.I'm glad I discovered you. Gave up on trains when we moved into a small bungalow. Then watched Hornby, a model world and something hit the heart. TT. apols for going off track slightly but I have always been a model railwayer for many years when I received the Princess Elizabeth set in the Late 50's early 60's? Anyway, thanks again, I love watching your videos.

This is the P2 we should have had instead of the earlier incarnation - I might have been able to afford it back then too! Good to see that Hornby have dusted off the 'good tin' of LNER green on this one - much better than the washed out effort they did on Chamossaire.

Wow, just wow. Compared to my old Railways P2, this is quite amazing. I was considering Prince of Whales, but at the moment, I'm all good I'm looking at other models. This one I will consider though once funds allow me to buy it. My old P2 is a lovely engine, except that the mechanism is quite insulting. 8 driving wheels and no bearings and a seriously crappy 3-pole motor. It runs quite badly now after all these years and with very low torque. However, I must say, this loco looks amazing. The finish is beautiful and no parting line. The cab detail is very similar to my Dublo Scotsman and the tender connector as well. Basically like Dapol now. Very easy to just uncouple the tender and don't have to faff around with the fiddly plug. The performance is also quite mind-blowing and the slow-downs are somewhat forgivable to me due to the massive wheelbase. Yes, it's very expensive, but I think you get a good model here. Great job from Hornby, definitely better than their Thompson Pacifics 👍👍

Good looking locomotive, but I prefer to have food for the family. Don’t want to annoy them. Even if I was single, £255 is too expensive. It’s a blessing I don’t have the resources to build a layout, also I have come to terms that model railway is now not affordable. I was lucky to have a decade of having models that were affordable. But now I am a video watcher and a fan of others who are able to make and enjoy their passion. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. I do enjoy your videos. 🎉🎉

Value for money is, of course, more subjective but even here your comparative data is really helpful. In the end, performance is critical. Who wants a super-detailed model that doesn’t run well?

Hi Sam, an excellent and useful review. The model looks fabulous, I agree it might have been nice to have a diecast running plate/boiler considering the price, but the weight should still be plenty for traction, especially considering the good quality motor and small driving wheels. I've got the Hornby Club sister loco 'Thane of Fife' on order, which is at a considerably lower RRP of £199.99. Once you factor in the 10% discount from club membership you actually pay £180. Still not exactly cheap, but far less than 'Lord President'. When you also consider the reward points that's another £18 you can take off your next order and effectively equates to £162. N.B. The diecast Dublo A4s, also have the same loco-tender connection, flickering firebox and 21pin DCC.

Another fine review, thanks Sam. You mentioned the earlier Hornby Railroad version of the P2, but there was a Hornby Main Range P2 which was released in 2014. I purchased one of these expecting something marvellous but found it so disappointing that I purchased no more Hornby products for four years. Good to know this new P2 is a fine model, but that doesn't exactly compensate those of us who bought the earlier one. Thanks for commending the retailer's service. Hi Sam, I have this one on its way at Hornby Club discount price of £209.99. I also have the club exclusive edition, Thane of Fife which is the same build at £199.99. Superb model albeit expensive. Goes very well with HM7000 chip and sound. The tender metal weight is shaped to fit the decoder and the speaker neatly, one above the other. I also have Earl Marischal (Scots spelling for Scottish aristocrat doing the same job as the Earl of Norfolk in England) also a club discount of £209.99. I thought when I was unwrapping that you would approve of the new packaging! As to packaging, also very good indeed direct from Hornby but, alas no biscuits. The fan on the axle could be for timing the new steam system fitted to the model of the new P2 Prince of Wales (currently under construction by the builders of Tornado). Keep up the good work!

Hi Sam. A gorgeous looking loco that proves Hornby have still got the oomph if they can be bothered. However, the RRP is too high for the average modeller so 'hats off' to D Rails for their consideration towards the not so well off amongst us. A question for all the viewers reading the comments is this: In what year can we expect Hornby to advertise a RRP of £1,000.00p? 1st prize goes to the person with the correct answer once we arrive at that year. 😁 Paul. 👍❤

Thanks for the review Sam. Excellent as always! I'd really love to have one of these but I'm not going to pay £200+ for a plastic running plate even if it's not warped. In recent months I've been fortunate enough to secure a Thompson A2/3 for £123 and a Gresley A1 for £126 - both brand new and both about half Hornby's asking price. I love them both, even if the Thompson has a warped running plate and an awful boiler seam. They're really good runners and they seem like excellent value - for what I paid. This P2 strikes me as being worth more than those but even so I think I'll wait and see if there are any significant discounts in 6-12 months. Depends on how many people think the same way as me I suppose.

The Bugatti P2s are one of my favourite locomotives, so when Hornby announced their plans to produce a RTR model of one, I was to say least very interested. Thankfully Hornby does seem to have delivered this time. The only real issue I have with the models of 2003 & 2005, is the price, but then to be fair, the P2s were always going to be a relatively expensive model: only six prototypes, which varied in detail; only the one livery, LNER Green; and a presumably a smaller market demand relative to more well known prototypes like the A3s or A4s. I don't know whether I want Hornby to produce the remaining four Bugatti P2s, on the one hand I'd really like all six, all the other hand my wallet is already hurting from the two I've just got. Also, slightly annoyingly, I've still got three unbuilt Keyser's whitemetal kits, procured from eBay at great expense, sitting in the to-do pile.....

Although hearing the price tag of this model and knowing it costs a similar amount to a Accurascale Manor I’ve pre-ordered (With Sound) it will be interesting to see how the detail and quality of the model compares. Really glad you enjoyed this model and from what I can see it does look a good one! However, I've noticed you still seem to believe the new Hornby 9F's are not very good in relation to their motor. I think you are wrong on this and heres why: 1. I have a Hornby 9F and it runs like a dream, smooth, excellent crawl and good power and no stalling. 2. I upgraded mine to DCC sound and its still ran well. 3. Correct me if im wrong here, but I believe your controller is a non feedback controller and I've noticed issues with certain motors on non-feedback controllers. (carpet layouts do not cause the issue you have so I am disregarding those comments as I deam them not relevant (although you could do with adding some pickups half way through the layout for good measure and you can use the beams for this wiring, just a suggestion)) Heres what I suggest, upgrade you 9F to DCC or get a feedback controller and try it again and update us. I'm all for calling Hornby out on there mistakes / greed; like their lack of speaker in the P2 and 9F. But I think the "motor problem" you are having is a controller problem not a problem with the motor they are using. I am not the only one to report that their 9F ran well and didn't encounter the problem(s) you had.

Wow! Fantastic model. H have been busy setting up another production in Vietnam. Perhaps this is the result? And finally up to scratch packaging as well. The official rrp is tickling the equivalent of 300 Euro which is close to German priced territory. Are H finally getting their game together? From a rather 'expensive' Märklinists point of view, we'd be happy with such a stunner on the lay out! Perhaps a smoke generator could have been expected as well, but perhaps H are preparing full synchronisation of both sound and smoke? That would be awesome 💓

@@phil36310 Oh, Quality management in China is plenty. It's just a matter having the right network over there and setting up all properly. I know, I've been there plenty times. Problem is, both American and British companies are just too stingy as a general rule of thumb. Certainly not all of them, but I know Hornby was, and the way they've been setting up shop there is just asking for trouble. Good example in our hobby is PIKO. They own their own factory in China, invested heavily in high tech methods, machines, automation and tools, pay operatives very well and with German management on site. And that's the way to do it. Successful Japanese companies operate similarly, and the same goes for masses of products. It's all possible, but it does require competence of management and not hesitating to invest ;) Btw, China itself and the Chinese are the most amiable people on earth; always having fun, laughter and most caring. Let all those politically driven and popular anti-China narrations not blind your mind..., they are bluntly very unrealistic ;)

I have the Hornby Cock O' The North (original version) and have ordered P2 Class, 2007 'Prince of Wales' With Steam Generator (with original P2 front) which I am looking forward to receiving. I have that new connector on my recent Hornby Dublo Flying Scotsman and think its very good. I sponsor the build of the new P2 Prince of Wales that is under construction. Great video as always thanks Sam

I mirror you then on all counts & have this Lord President on order too. I told the A1 Trust off the other week about the P2 Hornby PofW model, because they originally said they would be selling it, so waited patiently for a few years for them to announce it, now its available & almost sold out on pre-order. They then said they were no longer going to sell it but hadn't told anyone. Some P2 sponsors are going to miss the boat on the Prince of Wales I now expect. Luckily, Chester Models accepted my order for the PofW with smoke & sound etc.

To buy this model in New Zealand would cost in the region of $NZ800.00. Exchange rates with GBP are part of the reason, but a lot of retailers seem to follow a RRP idea, so unless you are a regular buyer at certain outlets, that is the price! My local model shop will not do “deals”, so he has lost out on a purchase of one locomotive and three coaches. I waited for three months to see if the stock sold, and when it was still on the shelf, I asked for a deal. He declined, and now three months later the stock is still there. It is not like in UK where shops may well turn over stock and re-order, this particular shop gets the next batch of a selection of Hornby, and very rarely re-orders previously stocked items. Another factor is our small population relative to UK and Australia. This may well lead to retailers dropping model railways altogether and stocking just other toys only. True “ toy shops”.

I own one of the hornby dublo flying scotsmans that they put out this year for her centenary, and it also has a lot of the same quality and detail that this engine has. It even came with the seprately fitted crew and new tender to engine couplings. I'm really happy with it but the price is definitely way too steep even if the engine is fully diecast. Great review, and I might get a p2 of my own now 😅

To be honest, I've never seen a streamlined Gresly engine with 8 driving wheels, before. This is definitely a first for me.

Fantastic model! Always been happy with the earlier version, which runs superbly, but when they issue the smoke generator equipped model (which probably uses the axle sensor you noted) then I'll get one.

Including painted crew figures amazes me! Especially on a steam engine model where you always have someone in the cab when it's moving, unlike diesels and electrics which can work in multiple. I do find it odd they have a new motor and conical flywheel inside.

Great review Sam! Very refreshing to see a positive one for Hornby. I must say though it grinds my gears because this model proves Hornby can make great models and to a high quality. This recent Drax wagons also prove they can make great value models so why don’t they just do this all the time I will never know 😂

Not wanting to be a grinch, but I would suggest noting the following. They are not killers, but do detract. The front lubrication box is not fitted on straight; The outboard lamp irons appear not to be straight in some of the closeup shots. That may be parallax error; There is a very definite fingerprint near the “N” on the tender; The water gauge glasses are not striped painted as other locos are. That may be prototypical; The blurb on the box says the running plate is metal and it is not; The additional name plates are actually rather thick plastic and at scale measurements would be about 6” thick. The movement of the valve gear looks a little different from other Walschaerts engines, but I cannot quite see what that difference is. That is probably me. It is expensive, but beautiful. I bought it notwithstanding. No pub for months!😢

Hi Sam, nice review. Thankfully I don't collect LNER equipment (I do BR with Southern locomotives) but this is a beautiful model. I find it ironic that just like the prototypes, the model P2 is far better than the rebuilt Thompson A2/2 version.

this is a gorgeous model, the streamlined p2 ive always seen as the "comically large a4" which is why it was my favorite british engine for a time. P.S. you should consider trying one of rapido's Canadian steam engines, they're coming out with a Canadian Pacific d10 10 wheeler this coming September and im going to be grabbing myself one, it'll be around the same price as this p2 though but its packed with lighting features and insane detail

This is tempting but we are not all able to afford such gems. I am reasonably happy with my almost 10 year old Cock of the North P2, which cost £40 (!) more than the Railroad version you have but does look much less stark. It is sobering that mine cost less than £120 new! Now we are talking about £255, albeit with a better motor, chassis, detailing, etc.

I dont normally get steam locos as i do modern day layout, so the only steam i already have is the Tornado, and I have the P2 on order at my local shop, the 2007 Prince of Wales which is currently being built by the same guys who built the Tornado.

Continental style tender couplers finally arrived! For the cornering behaviour: I'm surprised that it still works on R2 without derailing, as it has larger wheels compared to a German class 39, and the bodywork doesn't give any opportunity to hide a more flexible chassis (like Brawa did on their streamlined 4-8-4).

The cause of the slow downs is the front pony wheels that are touching the side streamlined cylinder skirts. Can be seen at 31:00 Otherwise it's a near perfect model.

Interesting you say the running plate is plastic on that particular model. Quite a surprise, indeed! I'm still awaiting my pre-order of the Hornby Club 'Thane of Fife' which I thought would be exactly the same as this model (except the name of course). The website and promotional email they sent me for the Thane of Fife both explicitly state it has a "diecast chassis and running plate". I wonder if that is exclusive to the Collector's Club version (although I doubt it as it's cheaper - just a membership bonus I'm sure - and according to the specs 20g lighter!)

Wow. All I have to say. That Crawl blew me away. The question now: Is this a better crawler than the Merchant Navy? Either the old one that you remotored or the Airsmoothed one, both are amazing. Mine just came in the mail, and I'll be reviewing it soon. First impressions are good though, before I even sat down to watch your review I set it to run in.

Yum .... pretty, very pretty. Can't recall any other 00 gauge loco which gives such an impression of sheer power in repose (..... not even the LMS Garratt). Great to hear of outstanding service from a retailer too. Just a random connection, someone went and built a really impressive 5in gauge 2006 Wolf of Badenoch. For any fans of the Bugatti P2 who are interested, there's a great clip of the beastie at work, from 'LMS4767' on KZbin.
