Having studied British steam locomotives for more than 65 years I have never before heard of a tender interior being painted orange. If that is authentic - and we must believe that Bachmann did their research - the question must be: why? What was its purpose? I hope someone can provide the answer. Another good review, Sam. Thank you.

Whenever I look at that model, it warms my heart to see that Bachmann did such a good job of catching the glamour and depth of LBSCR umber. It almost redeems them for making a drab GNR/LNER green and then using the proper LNER shade for NER models (which is wrong as NER green had more blue). It’s a shame that none of these majestic locos are preserved. At least we have books like “the liveries of pre-grouping railways” and the late Malcom Crawley to help us distinguish the right colours from the off ones. I highly recommend reading about liveries such as apple green, garter blue, Caledonian blue, and GER blue. It’s a fun, captivating topic that never gets old. Thanks as always Sam!

Fantastic model, and excellent review, Sam! Bachmann really seemed to have cornered the market on Atlantics, between the H1, H2, and C1. If I were to have Bachmann make any model at all, I’d have them make a GCR Atlantic, a Robinson 8B/C4, 8D-E/C5 specifically. Lord knows I would buy at least two of them. Happy Christmas, everyone! Hope to see you all before the new year.

That train is absolutely marvellous! I haven't seen a truly brown engine, either in real life or in model form (yes, there are quite a few orangy/brown), but extremely few true chocolate brown ones like this! And don't they look absolutely AWSOME as a full train with those carriages.

You're right, it's a jewel, especially towing the birdcages. On the down side, the mechanism, typical of Bachmann five years ago and the shoddy details (whistle, buffers, lamp brackets...) made this beauty a good candidate for a revamp : five pole motors with flywheel, sprung buffers, polished brass whistle and separated pats for the buffers, that's all needed. On my usual pedantic side, this engine was named "La France" for the visit of the Président de la République Raymond Poincaré in 1913, official voyage in Britain from the 23rd to the 29th of June, 1913. And back in November 1919 for a second official voyage in Britain, maybe with this engine again for the official train...

The capacitor is a standard capacitor used for a Stay Alive most likely. Stay Alive is more about keeping the decoder and motor running for a few seconds if power is lost, rather than lighting. Sure, lighting can be a little distracting if it flickers slightly, but the stay alive would allow it to get over insulfrog points without stalling if pickups lose connection to the track for a second or two. Additionally, a capacitor can also help make running a bit smoother and quieter. :)

Nice review, Sam. I have the Bachmann H2 "Beachy Head" in BR lined black. Overall wonderful models. Now, if you want to add an American Atlantic to your collection, I'd recommend the Broadway Limited Pennsylvania Railroad E6s. Almost entirely diecast, five-pole motor, sound, smoke, and lights. And it is a brute among Atlantics. One of the largest ever built, and there were 83 of them in service. When introduced they could outperform many contemporary Pacifics of its day. One still exists in preservation, number 460, the last built, famous for pulling the Lindberg train in 1927, beating airplanes bringing movies of Lindbergs parade from Washington, D.C. to New York City.

If I remember correctly the GWR had a French Compound Atlantic called La France which they bought for evaluation (Churchward). The name jogged my memory!
@forrestrobin27129 ай бұрын
Me too. The GWR atlantic No 102 « La France » was one of four French built De Glehn compounds which they purchased for comparison with a simple expansion locomotives. No 171 Albion, Churchward's prototype 4-6-0, was converted to a 4-4-2 specifically for comparison with the French locomotives, as they had no atlantics of their own, and put into traffic alongside them. The GWR’s conclusion was that although the compounds were lighter on coal consumption, the cost savings were offset by the higher maintenance costs of the more complex mechanism and the fact that they needed much more careful handling by their crews in order to get the best out of them.
@williamsquires30709 ай бұрын
If Bachmann were to re-release this and increase the price to 250£, they should at least add a 5-pole, skew-wound motor with a flywheel, and firebox lighting. Adding pickups for the center tender axle would be nice, too. Either that, or add sprung pogo-pins for the base keeper plate, instead of hard-wiring it. 😊 As a separate item Sam, have you considered listing the scale of the model(s) in your logbook (at least for non-OO scale?) And maybe have a logbook for British/European models in OO (or TT) scale, and another solely for American models (in HO/N scale)? Not sure where to put your O scale stuff, then; probably with the OO/TT scale models. Have a safe and Merry Christmas Sam! 😀

The LBSCR (and subsequently the Southern Railway) used ALL SIX POSITIONS for Discs (or lamps at night) on the locos - most other railways only used 4. This is because although 4 discs / lamps allows they type of train (express passenger, local passenger, royal train, express goods, etc) to be displayed there aren’t enough variations to give routing information. Steam headcodes on the LBSCR / SR / BR(s) were in fact based on routing - an equivalent to the stencils and roller blinds seen on EMUs with each disc / lamp configuration referring to a specific service pattern (including service type)

Fun fact: Due to La France having 19 inch cylinders compared to the 18 1/4 inch ones the rest of the H1s, she was the best of all the LBSCR's Atlantics. It was a shame how she was mutilated into a testbed for the Leader class. My source is the book, LBSCR Atlantics, by Jeremy English.

@@SamsTrains "Beachy Head" which is almost finished by now (I think) is a very similar design, right? But it doesn't have that dramatically sweeped footplate of the H1. But still it is so great that they were / are able to recreate an Atlantic!
@Kromaatikse9 ай бұрын
I think the hinged plate over the firebox is actually a heat shield between the driver and the fireman's work area. The actual firebox door is behind it, and it does have the GNR "cat flap" made more famous on Gresley's Pacifics, which originated on the GNR. Locomotives of the time would have had few gauges, but I think some indications of boiler pressure and the state of the brake system would be mandatory, as well as the gauge glasses for boiler water level which are indeed modelled. Looking just inboard of the cab windows, there is an embossed disc on the cab wall on each side, and this is probably where the mandatory gauges would have been fitted. The boiler pressure would be of most relevance to the fireman, and the brake gauge to the driver.
@SamsTrains9 ай бұрын

People, realy SMART people were thinking very hard on many things in the past and even tho ideas such as rotary engine has never become mainstay i consider it major positive that it happened at all (even tho mazda gave up on it very disenchantingly). Right point was not my gripes about engine tho it was merely a shorthand - more unique the better, especially if it runs good.

I think it's beautiful, the price before 2020 seems really reasonable now. The only letdown for me is the lack of trailing wheel and third tender pick up. Otherwise I'd say it's adequate for 200£ or thereabout. Anything higher than 220 starts to get questionable, especially without and painted valve gear inside. In my opinion, having the Midland Class 1000 Compound 4-4-0 in MR Crimson, I think this one may even rival that. The Compound is beautiful, but sadly unlike the H1 none were preserved which is a big shame. However, besides the C1 from the GNR the Bluebell Railway is building a H2 Atlantic in BR black and it's apparently close to completion. So soon we can experience a similar locomotive to this beautiful H1. Great review, Sam

The Genesis LBSCR coaches, despite Hatton’s calling them “umber” are actually the mahogany livery used by the LBSCR pre-1902 (these models have coach numbers inside the side crests which makes them pre-1900). The LBSCR switched to the darker lined umber and white in 1902 and then just lined umber in 1911.

As always a fair review with an honest rating that can be compared to other locomotives and trains.. Sorry but 200 pound still sounds expensive to me. It seems to be missing a few key features and those who are accepting this are talking about replacing the motor and even retro-fitting a fly wheel. Red Oxide is red/brown colour and that coal load is shocking for any locomotive built in the 2000's. For a true modeller with exceptional skills (Sam) this swapping motor, replacing coal load and weathering the tender to reflect a more appropriate colour is not a problem.. I accept that the locomotive is fine now and should give you years of pleasure. Weathering the engine should hide a lot of the problems with appearance for me. I agree the coaches make this a wonderful train. Pretty sure its appropriate to run a Pullman (Custard and Brown) in the trains as that was the first class carriage used on most regional services. Modelling a slightly larger train would be more expensive but its a good thing to wish for perfection.... FINALLY: MERRY CHRITMAS SAM AND CHLOE.... I hope you both have a wonderful Christmas Day and enjoy the Christmas/New Year celebrations. Christmas present or New Year resolution Chloe must buy one new locomotive a month for all of 2024. Sam can only buy a locomotive every two months but he can buy coaches and wagons for Chloe and his Locomotives to make wonderful new trains. Best wishes for the Christmas/New Year season.

Lovely loco and consist Sam. Brown doesn't work for us either, however the entire set of this one does stand out really well actually. A capacitor usually is a replacement for a flywheel. That one in your loco is to feed the decoder at power blips. In our experience, such capacitor needs to be at least 200uF as a bare minimum and rated for 25V or higher. 100uF is much too little. However, we try to fit 2000uF if possible. Depends on what the decoder and or loco can take. Despite all her shortcomings, with the coaches she just looks lovely. Happy Holidays Sam 🎅🎁🎄

haha I usually hate brown too... this just does it for me somehow! Yeah I was thinking that - that capacitor is too small to make any real difference besides maybe supporting a DCC decoder over the smallest of power blips? Merry Christmas - Sam :)

In 1915, there were no gluts of any colour. I think the tender was resprayed in 1928 because there was a glut of orange paint.
