As a volunteer who works on the Fife Heritage Railway who helped worked on the overhaul of the locomotive get painted into its NB look, it is surreal to see an engine I've worked on becoming a model. She is the prettiest 88DS in preservation if I say so myself and with the nearby Levenmouth railway opening next month, you'll be able to visit Leven easier to see her in person. 😊

@ianjeffery6744 actually it doesn't, they were covered up because of vandalism issues in the area and the lack of shed space for the locomotive.

Apart from the rear glazing, WHY did they paint the window on the doors? The BR Blue has clear glazing. I wonder if there's actually glazing under that paint. It's probably impractical to remove the paint if there is.

Yeah, if Hornby had just been a bit more consistent, it would really pick out the louvre detail there on the sides, though a quick pass with a hobby knife could improve this by scraping away a bit more of the yellow paint there. One could even use a fine-tip black marker, or paintbrush, to do the same thing with some dark green paint. 😊

Hi mukka, It's the same throughout the whole railway industry all over the world these days... too many over educated idiots who have no idea about trains trying to run and manage the rail industry. Hornby's howler of a balls up demonstrates exactly why we need more railway minded persons running the rail industry and places like Hornby that have let the standards collapse need a good shake up. I have become despondent at the ingrained incompetence and arrogance of modern management across all aspects of railways and their continued self praise. I have had enough and will be retiring from the industry and my driving job in July after pretty much 45 years as a railwayman. It's been a great journey over the decades but with the gradual disintegration of railways at the hands of dickheads it is time to let them get on with it. 😢 Great video chum. Regards from Oz. Gaz 😊 PS... I suppose a simple fix would be to push the panels out and stick some clear windows in the voids. Should not take long to do. Stay safe.

These are always so cute Sam. Personally, the other one you showed - BR blue example - would more row our boat tbh but this livery is of course very charming. The rear windows appear to be clear plastic with an unintended paint job. With a bit of care can the paint be stripped off?
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 14 күн бұрын
It was intentional as the real thing does have boards fitted to protect the windows when not in use - but I believe it was a mistake for Hornby to have created a working model with that feature... the boards are not modelled on the other windows either. Yes you could strip the paint but the glazing pieces would have to be removed first, Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Hi I did put this elsewhere, however, it seems that nothing has got through. For information theses multiple locos controllers on one track are in fact courting disaster. For example the wall wart power supplies are frequently designed for a 115v Switch mode power supply yet the clearances between the mains side and low voltage supply are not adequate for 24/250 volts. I discovered this when a radio unit for my transmitter made a load of smoke noise and fire. They MAY be CE but do not bet on it. I subsequently tested several and none had sufficient clearance. It gets better, most had no overload protection on the low volt side. Now it even gets better, in the event of running the trains on a 12V battery and charger then again there is no fault protection. There is no fault protection for any loco. Now I built my own PSU, it takes 7A on each leg, in the event of a glitch in the power, my unit has 2 ginormous capacitors that stop any shut downs AND gives me time to shut off the loco power. But better yet, in the event of any short circuit the "chip" folds over and shuts down. Remove the fault and it automatically is back on line. Incidentally, my 1940's Meccano controllers both have a trip system and will only take 1 loco. A very big national Radio retailer was nearly caught out on the above. Perhaps you would like to play with a wall wart, pull it to bits etc and see for yourself. Regards Roger

I feel like all model locomotives are too geared for speed. I’d always sacrifice an accurate top speed to have very smooth crawl. Like you said, doing switching with a great slow speed crawler is SO enjoyable, and when they jitter and jump, it’s always incredibly frustrating and disappointing. Unfortunately, for me, disappointment is much more usual. This model does pass what a modeler friend calls “the three foot test”. Looks great from three feet which is how you look at models 95% of the time. Another excellent review Thanks as always! 😊👍👍

@SamsTrains, shouldn't Hornby be using the "B" wheel arrangement, not the 0-4-0 Whyte wheel arrangement? Being a shunter, a coupler should already be inserted on the front, not included as an accessory. As for the "finish", being a shunter, it would be most likely weathered, and look more dirty.

I have bought mine on a budget (90 € instead of 120€, thanks Modellbahn-Union), and it is the BR period 5 in the Civil Engineering Department livery. A nice little engine that runs fine. That's a pity the botched paint work, especially the painted over rear windows. Especially with such an original livery. As mine, it is a fair runner, and a good puller as you showed us. If you fancy mini industrial layouts, especially Inglenooks, with short points (choose Peco ones !) this model is a good choice.

This model looks nice but the quality on your example is noticeable which quite a shame because it could have got higher score in your review Sam. Still, it is a pretty good model because of its reasonable price.

Sam, i dunno if you have ever made a video about this, but i was thinking...... I only got DC stuff, and do not have a brain like Einstein. And so, DC it is. DCC is already way too much hassle. BUT, i do like automation. And so what i was thinking was the following. Reed switches and tiny magnets on the end of the last wagon pulled by some loc. The switch on the tracks, triggered by the magnet. For what? For whatever reason. To stop the train. To make a switch/turnout/point or whatever name switch, turnout, change points, i dunno. I am dutch, sorry. But you get the idea i am sure. I know it requires a lot of wires. And in today's world it basically is stone age way of thinking. But what do you think? Let me give an example: A station or yard, with some split tracks coming in from the main line. The main line has a switch board, easy enough. The split tracks have sensors as in the reed switches. And when the last wagon or cart or whatever the name is has been pulled into the siding, the magnet underneath will trigger the reed switch and the power to that part of the track is turned off. In my tiny mind i can see 2 trains running on the same track, 1 with a magnet and the other without. A switch/point/turnout whatever being switched by this magnet. So they keep switching tracks in a continues loop simply by a reed switch and a magnet. Obviously both locs have the same speed and pull the same length so they will never interfere with eachother. What do you think? Possible or just way too difficult, why bother, back to the stoneage, etc? I kinda like the idea, and i think it would be possible to create something like that.

Hi Sam, I find your reviews honest thorough and inciteful, however I feel your subject matter is becoming a bit samey samey. Just by way of a change, please try a Piko hobby range diesel. The quality , performance and value compared to Hornby's generally overpriced and questionable offerings in astounding. Not everyone's cup of tea and no doubt doing Euro stuff regularly would not do your figures any good, but just as a comparison, I think just one review could raise some eyebrows.

Well, Sam. I think Hornby cheated you out of some window glazing on this one. The BR blue one has window glazing on the portion of the door molding, but the new one doesn’t have any. I wonder how many pence they saved there. 😆🤣 Or maybe that’s prototypical. Maybe the BR blue one wasn’t supposed to have window glazing in the door, but they put it in. Hmmm. 🤔

Paint is inexcusable. I suspect the same people who do the design also do the quality assurance because a critical eye would've spotted the problems instantly.

Sorry but I thought it was April 1st and Hornby issued this as a joke! The louvres are a joke, the painted rear windows are a joke, the wheels look like Meccano wheels but the biggest joke is the price!!! I wouldn't pay much more than £10 for one of these.

I’d take off a full star for not having functional headlamps; these days, even HO-scale (1:87) locomotives have functioning ditch lights which are way smaller that these cheap, plastic moldings Hornby threw on this shunter! Heck, I’ve even seen ditch lights on N-scale (1:160) which function, and those are absolutely TINY! Hornby has no excuse for making a non-functional front headlamp at least. In combination with the blanked-out rear windows, this is just totally a steaming pile. 💩 No railroad would take possession of a shunter with no rearward visibility and no working headlamps! I’m with Sam on this one. More Hornby incompetence. Call ‘em out Sam, call ‘em out! 😅 Hornby should at least fix the rear window glazing for this price, or charge about 20£ less (or model the boards that were covering the window as Sam pointed out.)

Yellow paint has a tendency to be a little transparent and should have been applied first on this model, most of us who do model work understand this. As for the door handles they should have been done in a “weathered” brass. The rear windows should never been painted over, anybody should be able to figure out that the driver would have to be able to see what he was doing in reverse.

Perversely, from a distance, the poor painting of the grills helps them stand out but it is still rather poor. I wonder how easy it is to remove the paint from the windows? Probably it is not and one would have to fit new windows. Hornby do need to stop scoring these "own goals". They cannot afford them.
