I really love the fact that Hornby got onboard with TT (pardon the pun). I saw a lot of uproar in the UK about this when it happened, I didn't really understand it, especially from my perspective, from central europe, where this scale has been around for decades and is fairly popular. The fact that Hornby got into this, means that we can finally get more variety in rolling stock! British stuff was never available in TT scale up until now (to my knowledge), which is a pity, since the UK is pretty much the birthplace of railways! It brings a very welcome variety to the TT scene. Finally it's not all german and central european rolling stock! Added bonus is that Hornby choose a coupler for their TT range that is compatible with pretty much everything made in europe, and not some proprietary thing. What I have yet to measure is what wheel diameter Hornby uses and if it's compatible with replacement wheels I can get around here (the ones Tillig and old BTTB models use). By the way I also find it sort of curious how people in the UK seem to complain about Hornby's prices in TT (or other) scale. I'm used to much higher prices for similar offerings here, although Tillig and Roco, etc, are indeed slightly higher quality, it's also a lot more expensive. Hornby did a really great job balancing quality and pricing as far as I'm concerned...

My opinion about what Hornby have to do as their forthcoming commercial policy is to concentrate on UK TT120, they have an edge on it and, with lower price, they can make it. For OO, they have to ditch this scale, everyone and their dog eat the wool on their back, and they have not done a retool policy as Bachmann does (their Black Five is an abysmal failure). In OO, they can have a great success if they decide to do only low price rolling stock in OO with a pricetag target of GBP 10-15 for a wagon, GBP 15-25 for a coach, GBP50-75 for a diesel and 75-100 for a steam engine. And they can do that with actualized old Lima models if they are not charging too high. For their railway range, they can sell their molds to other manufacturers, Dapol might be interested by the small kettles they have, and their GWR/SR rolling stock. They can rebrand some recent successful Railway range as Basset-Lowke (2MT and 9F for instance) before selling them after one or two more issues. I think they have found the right formula with TT. They just need mode quality control and be reasonable for the pricing. The HAA is a right model to propose now. Hope they will pursue.

Hi Sam, another great review, thanks! However, usually wagons are checked on Gordon's hill and that's missing a bit 😊 maybe it's an idea to add a TT-track to your layout (if you can squeeze it in)? Greetings from Belgium 🙋♂️ Erik

I have 4 of these, all I could afford before my layout's first exhibition 4 weeks ago. 3 of these specific ones in Railfreight Red with the canopy, and 1 in the later Coal Sector yellow without the canopy. And they all run perfectly, no issues. I'm modelling 1978-1983, so the idea is to get 3 of each number (Hornby having done 3 red and 3 yellow identities), remove the canopies from the red ones, and repaint the yellow ones into bauxite. Which looks good, except the silver paint decided to come off the coal sector one before the coal sector logos did... But, a bit of weathering helped hide it.

In N gauge we have 3 versions of this wagon from Mintrix, Peco and Graham Farish (although the Trix version is long out of production). That being said they are all very old tooling and we could do with a new version…I shudder at price though! Just a note; at around 7:56 you are talking about the separately fitted upper section. This is prototypical as originally as built the wagons didn’t have this “Canopy” and not all receive them. I was going to be critical of Hornby for calling this an “HAA”, but reading suggests only some wagons had a different TOPS code (HBA or HCA), with some retaining “HAA” with a canopy. Nice wagon for an emerging gauge, should be sold in multipacks as even the smaller trains were over 20 wagons.

Hi Sam, a great professional review as always, have you considered reviewing vintage TT scale items for a comparison?
@robertcampbell89555 ай бұрын
Hi Sam, after your visit to West Hill Wagon Works it would be great if you could demonstrate and test the Hunt magnetic couplings on N, TT and OO. Standard TT couplings seem to have variable success on coupling, and can be awkward to uncouple. They also need straight track. Perhaps for a rake of wagons like this you could compare? I think 3 lengths are on offer for very close, close and standard couplings? Which would work best on R2 curves?
@trevorbellTT1205 ай бұрын
All my TT rolling stock have magnetic couplings, so easy to use.
@briancooper5625 ай бұрын
Just nit picking but a used hopper would be polished on the inside by the load filling and emptying and any horizontal outside surfaces coated in dust and 'overspill' needs a bit of weathering? The couplings look better then OO and N but not yet as reliable as N/009.
@cdyvids225 ай бұрын
If TT is to succeed, hornby should make a loco not yet avaliable in OO, it would drive people in, maybe somthing LBSC, and they could make an E2 and jinny, since we're getting the j50, they'll have the chassis to fir bodies to

Not even going to mention the big crack at 7:14 on the inside? I mean sure that could be fixed with some CA, or hidden with a live coal load... but a crack... really? I would note, the lack of free rolling is likely intentional. Since they can't put a lot of weight in these cars, and likely expect a modeler to add their own weight to get more in line with prototypical weight, having a car not free wheel easily allows you to 'simulate' weight without having to add more weight otherwise.

I think Hornby should spin off their OO-scale stuff, and concentrate on TT-scale… that, and get rid of those silly, not-so-reliable couplings. Either use the older “Arnold” one-piece N-scale couplers, or use the Micro Trains N-scale knuckle couplers. Or design their own tension-lock TT-scale couplings. 😊

so, £1000.00 for a full rake, PRIOR to Hornby's price hike, dodgy wheel sets, and poor couplings plus, as yet, no really suitable loco to pull them ( yes I know 400's were seen on early MGR's ) but Hornby have missed a trick with not, as yet doing a class 47. And, over and above this, are they giving TT120 priority over 'OO'? with their current situation? " There may be trouble ahead..."
@davidstrains49105 ай бұрын
@@mrbluesky2050 just referring to your comment regarding a suitable loco the class 50 currently in the TT range is a suitable loco, although the 50s were mainly a passenger locomotive they were sometimes hauling freight, there are some photos online of 50s hauling MGR wagons, granted it was a rare working for them but they did haul them from time to time so currently hornbys TT 50 is suitable for these wagons until a more suitable locomotive is released.
