Looks like a beautiful set - 25 years ago I attempted to build the Kirk coaches set - needless to say it didn't go well - just didn't have the skills and tools to finish them to the high standard they needed - never thought I'd see them ready to run at an affordable price
@AndrewMeggs7 ай бұрын
Agree! This was a dream set ever since I first read about the Coronation coaches but didn’t believe I could do them justice myself. It’s clear Sam’s spent a lot of thought on these models, and the honesty of the challenges faced, and I’m excited to see the rake on my layout!

Well Sam I got mine a few days ago (except the Observation car which isn't due for a few more weeks) and I have to say you did an amazing job, they're fantastic and you can be very proud of them. The packaging/box they come in is also top quality. 😀 They did make a huge dent in my wallet, but totally worth it. I love them! To be fair the price per coach isn't that bad considering they're lit, the interiors and overall quality, it's mostly the fact they're a set of nine that makes them so expensive.

I think sam has done an excellant job of these coaches, and I think the wait for them will be well worth the wait. If they are going to produce more of these coaches they could do a Silver Jubilee set Silver grey and set of the West Riding in 2 tone blue like the coronation set. After the Second World War all the sets were split up and used as seperate coaches in other trains by BR.

I believe that some of the ex-Coronation coaches were used for a time post-WW2 and it would be a big treat if they were to be made for sale as well.

I hv had the pre-order in on these since the dawn of time, just based on the actual coach photos. As an engineer what has been thought about and subsequently designed has far exceeded my expectations. So much so, I can see me getting the further rakes in other periods when announced. Also, its good you explain all the design history; in my previous job as Bus Dev Manager, once you explain what goes into a product, and the subsequent benefit to the customer, the cost becomes a secondary issue. Or in this case, if you had to build them yourself from scratch, and decorate, you wouldnt be able to do it even for the RRP.

These already look good and they're not even painted yet. Really hoping that there will be a Silver Jubilee set in the future as well. Will the twin coaches be able to separate for storage or will they need to stay as a fixed ~600mm (I'm estimating) length?

Might I suggest that you create a set using your new HMDCC technology? It has been a while since hornby has produced a DCC set and it could save hornby the cost of an expensive DCC controller

Obviously much painstaking work has gone into developing these carriages. This is a credit to Sam and Hornby. What I am curious about is how readily convertible are these carriages to EM gauge. Accurascale / Irish Railway Models have developed locomotives and mark 2 carriages which though set at default 16.5mm gauge are readily convertible to EM gauge and 21mm gauge (Irish gauge in 4mm scale). Maybe my query could be answered.

What coaches from these were used when Mallard set the speed record?
@jimbobwhale4 ай бұрын
Only six of the usual nine coaches were used on the record run. The observation car was not used. The dynamometer car was coupled to the tender before the six coronation coaches that were used. It does not seem to be recorded anywhere that I can find which other two coronation coaches along with the observation coach were missing! Hope this helps. Regards Jim
