Considering 21C1 was built and commissioned in 1941 - in WW2 - shows the English spirit at the time! And I have to confess though Stewart, the black liveried MN class is my favourite Nice to see your up and around putting these videos and running sessions together - and thanks for the history and model scenarios together, well worth the watch!

It’s important to have a hobby to get your mind off the outside world right now. The downside is that my one or two hours in the train room takes maybe three or four!!

Brilliant production (loved the station scene with announcements) Isn't it nice to being able to be positive about a Hornby model. They have done a top job with these for sure. Take care. Mike

I went to the same primary school where Oliver Bulleid started his schooling. It might surprise you to know the location is in New Zealand. Of course I was there quite a few generations later.

Splendid production Stewart. Really had me on the edge of my seat! The scene with the two MN's coming through the overall roof is one that I shall not forget! The historical bits were so very good - I've never seen any of them before and it was quite a revelation. On the downside, I have had to send my 35017 Belgian Marine back to Hornby with a broken wire and a connector that won't come out. Expecting repaired loco round about 7th August. All the best, Reinhard

Good, an internal shot of the new Hornby mechanism. Finally Hornby seem to be learning that small diameter flywheels (used to date) can smooth a not so good 3 pole motor. But a large diameter flywheel can not only smooth the motor, but also provide what is known as "Run-on". To reveal "Run-on" first run in the model. Then set it to full speed, and then cut power to the track instantly. This will reveal the loco does NOT stop dead, but cruises to a halt gently. My two locos of this type, will "run-on" around 24-26 inches after a few hours each, of use. What this means in normal usage is that the loco becomes even smoother, and will start and stop more realistically even when your hand is not so smooth on the control knob !!! Note also that the mechanism has been reversed from normal. In other words the motor is now nearer the front (and well clamped in place) followed by the flywheel and finally the gear tower. Hornby Bulleid models of ten years ago, had a serious design flaw, in that the motor was not properly clamped in place both front & rear. So the motor chewed up its primary cog, and the model then made various whirring noises but failed to move. There is however ONE PROBLEM clearly visible in the cut-away picture showing the locos internals. Yet again Hornby have failed to stuff any decent adhesion weight in this model, other than the actual diecast chassis. For some odd reason this problem seems to only afflict steam tender locos. Diesel & Electric loco models by Hornby often weigh between 400g & 550g out of the packet, and will pull anything up a mountain as a result. My two Merchant Navy locos, (analogue) models 35023 Holland Afrika Line & 35028 Clan Line weighed in excluding tenders at 342g each out of the box. This oddly was insufficient to haul 12 coaches on straight level track. At the other end of the scale I have a Hornby (WR) Grange 4-6-0 which weighed excluding tender just 261g, purchased back in 2008, which not only pulls 12 on the level but up a 1 in 100 gradient !!! What this all means is that total weight is not the only factor in good haulage. But 300+ grammes is usually good enough for 12 coaches on the level !!!! It took some time to figure out what was wrong with my new Merchant Navy models, but it is partially lack of balance. Weight needs to be over the driving wheels. But if you have to add weight ahead or behind the drivers, the weight front and back needs to be the same, or you tip the engine one way or the other and loose adhesive weight on the drivers themselves. In the end I have had to add 75g of lead weight (fishing tackle lead shot) to the inside of each loco. Which allowed them both to haul 13 coaches without any signs of slipping. However I've just discovered in the last couple of days, they can't quite cope with my Bournemouth Belle 12-car Pullman rake, due to the drag of the Pullmans which have LED axle pick ups. So probably another 20g in each loco will be needed ! Happy Modelling. 😝

Thanks for the detailed reply re the Hornby mechanism, never had any adhesion problems with any of the Bullied Pacifics including the new unrebuilt Merchant Navies but then I don't run trains of the length that you do, seven is my maximum which they have no problem with. Flywheels seem to be fitted nowadays to loco's which is a move in the right direction , anyway after all that I hope you did at least enjoy watching the video, all the best Stewart

Nice, but I don't like Southern Steam Engines. I don't like the Spam Can shape. I'm missing City of Truro on your railway. Please run her, she's my beloved steamy daughter and I love God's Wonderful Railway a whole lot more.
