Hornwort or Parrot's Feather? (Bonus: I learned A New Word Today)

I collected some new plants yesterday, but I'm not sure about the species. It's either "Hornwort" (Ceratophyllum demersum) or "Parrot's Feather" (Myriophyllum aquaticum) which is an invasive species.

This is a species of myriophyllum. Parrots feather is a common name for plants from this genus. There are some kinds that are invasive and some that are native to the us. It changes dramatically when it grows emersed so it is may be confusing to identify. It's hard for me to be certain from the shots in the video but I think it's myriophyllum spicatum.

Parrots feather grows up in still bodies of water but in fast flowing water it stays under water.

I think it's milfoil, which is related to horn wort so it's hard to tell. Parrots feather is definitely a different plant than the milfoil I have had experience with. Maybe I have them mixed up but that definitely looks like milfoil to me. Milfoil also grows in huge patches like I saw in the collecting video.

Hornwort is definitely rigid like it almost hurts to touch....

Just plant some of it outside the water and it should give you what t looks like when it grows

I've got that same type of plant I think... and i have identified it as parrot feather.. my hornwort won't have any roots from stem and what I think is the parrot feather will have roots coming of the stem. So i am not entirely sure either, but its just my observation on what it is. I will have to shoot a video to let you see.

Milfoil, parrots feather or feather fern, is blueish like a blue spruce. Hornwort is more green with reddish tint,

I'm sure you figured it out long ago but that's 100% millfoil. Looks just like the stuff I have which I got from our lake. Eurasian milfoil that invaded

This stuff grows up at my cabin and it’s not hornwort cause that grows up there too and I have enough to know

Definitely a milfoil species. The eurasian variety is invasive, and there are native american milfoil species. I just read today that you can count the needles on one side of a leaf. Eurasian Milfoil has 12 or more needles PER SIDE of the leaf. American have less. Seems legit...

From my personal experience most local aquatic plants dont last due to melt...........es[pecially Anarchis. Parrots Feather is a decent one t Immersed or Emmersed make a huge differene in longevity.hough.

I tried the acachris before when I was new and excited by everything, and new had luck with it either. It always melted.

I didnt have luck with it at first at all, but I recently collected more and its booming. I know that elodea canadensis hates warm water, so try it unheated
